can you point me in the direction of finding more pictures and video of that day. My dad fought in Beirut and has PTSD, he is looking for solace in the images
Thank you for remembering,,,,,,,,I was there and we did 2 tours over there HQ CO 24 MAU,,,,,,,I will never forget those horrors,,,,,,,,,,if you were there or knew someone contact me,,,,,
I finally made myself search "Beirut 83" on YouTube. I was in the Marines for many years following Beirut and participated in a few more engagements...including Shield/Storm, Bosnia and Haiti....but it's Beirut that is always with me...always haunts me. God Speed to these fallen heros. Corporal Moreno, 2nd Radio Battalion, 24th MAU 6/83 - 11/83
I was at Parris Island getting ready to graduate boot camp when this happened. The ROE was a screwup from the start. Peacekeepers? So Regan thought it was a good idea not to have loaded weapons on patrol or while standing guard...
It was Ronald Reagan that murdered those poor Marines! 650 IDF soldiers had just died in a pointless war in Lebanon until Reagan decided to send in the Marines as "peacekeepers" with ROE not to load their weapons when patrolling! He signed their death warrant when he sent the Marines to a bloody civil war and backed a corrupt Lebanese President who just signed a Peace Pact with Israel but who never had real control. Pres. Gemayel fooled the Americans into fighting (and dying) for him.
@westiesugar I did. Read book of reporter Thomas Friedman, "From Beirut to Jerusalem". He was living/working there when it happened and won 2 Pulitzer's writing about the war. What "history" are you referring to?
Iwas in the Marines from 1977 to 1986. even though i never went there, I lost friends who were there. i still get an uneasy feeling each year. it starts, around the 15th of Oct, and ends around the first of Dec. thanks for posting this, Im glad that people remember. Semper Fi.
I was in 5th grade when this happened. My teacher at the time made sure to understand what happened. Even in liberal NYC. I look back and realized that teacher may have been gay....but he was defintely proud to be an American.
I was a member of Beach Party. I was a dozer operator for Amphib Construction Batallion 2 out of Littlecreek. Came over with the 24th MAU on the USS Harlan County. I remember the day vividly. Are there anymore Beruit Seabees out there? Would like to get in touch.
Wow it has been 25 years already, I was shifted out of the 1/8 before it happened back at Lejeune when the news came accross the TV. Even today it gives me a sick feeling my buddies were killed in "non". The war still goes on even while I sleep...sometimes only the dead know peace...
The date of the Marine Barracks bombing is etched into the minds of every Marine today. October 23, 1983....they teach us that date in boot camp so every Marine today...tomorrow and years to come will never forget....we give a damn!
TODAY WAS THE 25TH Beirut Memorial in Jacksonville, N.C. MY HEART & PRAYER GO OUT TO THEIR FAMILYS. IF ANY ONE NEEDS SOME HELP MAYBE MY HUBBY CAN HELP HIS NAME IS ALAN (BIG AL) OPRA.PLEASE CONTACT ME..
25 years ago today as a young Marine I learned about the death of 241 of my fellow Marines as they lie sleeping in their beds at the Marine barracks in Lebanon. My thoughts are with them and their families.
I will never forget the smell of bodies everywhere and the smoke and carnage, yes i can identify with 9-11, i was about 19 then and i remember for the first 3 months living in fear for my life then slipping into a routine of knowing each day could be my last.
i was just a young pfc unsure as to why we were there. serving also as net control taking and authenticating calls for fire from an entire fleet battle group which included the uss new jersey, i used to think what if they new i was just 19
Stevie B Wentworth, I can still see your face I can still see your eyes I remember all of our days gone by The dreams that I had for you and I A treehouse for 2 in the sky My childhood sweetheart Now I hope to see you in heaven. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 3:16
Thank you for posting a terrific tribute. Some were my friends, all were my brothers. No doubt 9/11 was horrible but most people don't remember the events of 10/23/83 & their significance, this was the begining of this war on terror for us as a country. Semper Fidelis.
