hi , I'm a member at wesleyan potters and sorry i missed you when you were there. when are you coming back to glastonbury ct. thats where i live . i just loved the video.. thanks and come again soon
You know getting back into that clay sounds amazing. Im still in High School here in Southern California and I haven't been able to touch clay since early June, when the school year ended. I've been watching your videos for close to three months waiting till my School Year starts back up again so I can get back to the wheel. Ive got so many new ideas from your videos. This year I'm going to be the Teacher's assistant so I hope to have as much free time to throw as I can!
This is the Leach Wheel, it was designed in the early part of the 1900's, by Bernard Leach and friends. Simon's draft plans for this wheel design are availlable. He has spoken at length about the wheel and even has vidoes of people making one for him. Hilary
great videos! im glad i stumbled upon you. anyway i was wondering where you got your kick wheel. ive been looking and looking and ended up deciding to do build my own because none looked comfortable enough.
Amazing! Simon could you do a quick clip about arm/elbow posture - I always struggle with large pots as I move my arms away from the initial lifts from the wheel sink. I know some potters dig their arms into their hips/sides/etc but could you show us how you do it? Or does anyone else have other tips? Thank you!
I know everyone has a different way of doing this, but keeping your elbow in on your rt. arm (counter clock rotation), sort of attached to your body, may help. As you said the position changes as you go along and are adding less force. I have a recent vid on a tall cylinder, the information there may help. Really you have to find your own way, so keep trying different things.
Great to see you back! You actually seem like a different person :)
Our weather here is changing and I'm fired up to get back on my wheel :) !!! It's like getting on a bike after a long rest...at first it will be wobbly, but I'm sure I didn't forget how to ride :) !!!
Welcome back Simon! Glad you had such a wonderful trip here to the US. Did miss you- spent time "clicking" thru past videos to avoid withdrawals. Great resource. Robin Georgia, USA
Great pulling Simon . I really like the way you use the side of your wooden tool for shaping .The rib I gave Simon was of a type given to me by Frank Parsley of Braham's Pottery Barstable North Devon . It is a traditional English rib . The bigger one is for larger pots. Both are heavier and have a lot of torque to them in use .. Great seeing you Simon and wonderful making friends > Yours Guy
HOW do you get it off the wheel like that? If I don't through on a bat or let dry on the wheel head then my pot gets all bent out of shape. What can I do to avoid this?
Put a little water around the piece then cut it of the wheel with a wire while the wheel is spinning. Then put a little water in front of the piece and wire again with the wheel stopped. Three fingers to the bottom, push the vessel towards the edge. With your other hands three middle fingers at the wheel edge, let the vessel slide onto them. This is THE easiest way. Simon' dry grab is the BEST way, though a little more confidence is required.
Fantastic pot, as you know I love big pots! so... thanks for your trip! ...Now 'cause of it, throught you & all the things, people specially Already finished photos that had to edit in photoshop.
Guy & other contacts you had made, we, your students, are going to learn from your experience !
its his lift, (i think he just started using it recently) but hes not pressing from the outside. he streches the clay from the inside and on the outside he sorta cones it back in...=\
about time you got back....jesh I was going thru withdrawals. It's great to share and learn from other potters. Sounds like you had a great in here in the USA. Come again soon. Laura-Elkhart IN
Yep, been off the wheel for a week here. Spring break is great, but I have to admit, I can't wait to work some clay on Monday! Glad to see you back Simon!

Hey Simon,
Great video! I didn't know about the lightswitches in Europe in comparison to USA. Thanks for that info!
As for big pots, I just made my largest pot ever last night, only about 16 lbs (7.25 kilo). I'm starting to like these bigger pots :)
Thanks for the video!

We flick them down in Aus. too. We spell colour with a "u" like you too. Guess The U.S. had a thing against England for a while though.
