Those idiots with messed up hands wouldn't have that problem if they weren't creating huge amounts of friction by swinging like monkeys whilst doing pullups.
2:10 onwards - I thought the announcer said sternums have to go above the bar. That wasn't even near the bar. That was an insult to a pull-up, and don't give any of that kipping pull-up bs, if you're going to do a kipping pull-up at least go full rom with it. I fail to see what any of this actually accomplishes. Theres jack at all trades master of none, then theres not even good at anything.
people used to say the same thing about running, mista. and god knows there is less variety in running than in crossfit (i say as a former distance runner). prior to prefontaine, the running revolution, and nike/bowerman, NOBODY cared to WATCH running. it was viewed as ... wait for it.. exercise.
I just can't wrap my head around it. Why would people other than family members and friends of those competing, sit in the stands and watch people exercise? Crossfit, a spectator sport? Meh. That's right up there with watching paint dry.
How do they not get injured when their forms breaks down ? I been watching some of these crossfit..but I get confused by what their goals are? I mean I look at their WOD but it's like all over the place. I don't know where the progression is. I don't deny they are in good shape but still I feel that there are better methods out there .
Kipping pullups require a level of explosiveness and power. The one thing I would caution is the wear and tear that one could endure to the joints and ligaments if this move is done repeatedly over time. The most important thing when working out is getting results with the least amount of injury. If this movement can be performed while using the correct form or subjecting the body to pulling or tearing a muscle, ligament or joint; more power to the person that is able to do this move.
As a response to people asking about the form of the pullups: Crossfit is about maximum power output in a measured amount of time (i.e. how much work can you get done, and how quickly?). So if kipping pullups allow them to get more reps done quickly, it is acceptable. There are still standards for range of motion that must be adhered to. Their goal differs from that of most workout programs in that they aren't trying to just build muscle. In that case, strict pullups would be preferable.
@Darthmaio Yeah I don't understand the crossfit chinups either, I learned gymnastic style chin ups where your chin must actually go over the bar, slow drop to a dead hang and repeat. The crossfit method emphasizes rhythm of motion rather than proper complete muscle contractions. There may be a reason for this, a benefit of sorts, but I have yet to know it.
@nnnbbbmmm79 Yeah the only thing I can imagine one would gain from doing pull-ups like that is maybe a cardio workout. Because you certainly aren't working the Lats very much by doing them like that.
Go to the website and read their information, they have a very articulate rationale for why they do what they do. JWRing87 has given you a quick answer above...
@TreeSmoke1999 - you don't have a single clue what you're talking about it. it's telling that you say KB swings are the dumbest exercise you've ever 'seen'. Try 'em. Keep your chest up, torso hollowed out, shoulders externally rotated, get your arm behind your ear at the top of the swing (without chicken-necking). Less than 20kg does not count.
Technique is garbage, I cant believe people compete in a sport which tests kettle bell swings LOL, probably the dumbest exercise I've ever seen. All I see is a bunch of eliteist whipper snappers!!
@TreeSmoke1999 WHAT? kettle bell swings is one of the best exercise methods around? training the muscles you normally do PLUS the support muscles? theres a reason top athletes and generally all special forces use it...
Every Kettlebell swing I see from CrossFitHQ has them swinging it all the way up to straight above the head. Is that normal? Never seen that before. Seems a bit unnecessary, no?
@tacklemcclean - Kettlebell swings that go to above head down to behind knees are "American" technique. KBs parallel to shoulder to floor are "Russian" technique. Both are valid. American style engages more muscle groups and allows for a faster "flow" such that it is favored when going for fastest time.
But, did they get the job done? this is not an asthetics competition, that's for fags in speedos, this is about real athletics and completing the objective..what do you have to say about that??
@keithtm1776 The infamous 'kipping' pull-up. Bad, bad exercise....I agree it is the fastest way to do a 'pull-up' but this is not good in the long run or for average joes.
Camille is pretty amazing. I think if she trained in MMA and had many years of experience, she can give Gina Carano a run for her money because of her mentality. Just pure focus!
Exercise as a competitive sport??? It's akin to cooking a gourmet meal, then throwing it out without eating it. Strange!!! ...But the chicks are definitely hot!
@IRedRuMI 1) To laugh at all the stupid comments written by stupid people who think they'll build bodies like these juicers without steroids/hgh.
2) To help educate those stupid people about getting in shape and opening their eyes about/to steroid/hgh use.
3) To perve on juiced-up "females" + see how big they are these days + try to figure out what they're on + shake my head at how obvious it is. You know, same reason why people watch the Olympics, female tennis, lingerie football league...
Form really isn't that bad on most of these. The exercises...are what they are. A kip pullup is not a pullup/chinup. Overhead squats where good considering how tough it is to do.
As a person who swears by Crossfit, and someone who is picky about form, to all the youtube form warriors, please shut the hell up about form. The 'bad' form, may not be 100% textbook, sure, but these people are stronger, faster, tougher, and better in pretty much every way than your bicep-curling, eliptical-training, smith-machine using beanpole ass is. So, rather than shout from the sidelines, maybe head down to your local box and find out what a real workout is.
and by deviation i dont mean bad form. there is 'Bad' form and then there is acceptable deviation from the IDEAL resulting from biomechanical diversity and thats what it is, an ideal not an absolute.
yes, the second deadlifters upper back rounds as he reaches near full extension. so fucking what? this is not a text book, its real life. his starting position is perfectly fine, his arms are straight, he does not hyperextend his back and importantly he maintiains his lumbar curve. its perfectly acceptable when you realise this is the real world and the implications that go with that. so stop crapping it.
all you guys complaining about people having less then text book form. who the fuck does exactly??? almost nobody actually matches the bio mechanical ideal 'good form' guidelines are based on. and thats all they ultimately are, guidlines. deviation is inevitable in all but a tiny minority of people who happen to have been born with a very narrowly confined set of physical parameters.
All things said... The idea is genius, the people at the top are genius. I assume these competitors were not coached to that degree. Standards for range of motion exist but do not accomodate the greater issue which is whether or not what you are doing is being done well. Hundreds of thousands of kids if not millions nation wide squat to or below a parallel hip crease are you to tell me that statement should suffice. Is it possible that range of motion shouldn't be the only standard?
