Of late I have taken an interest in 1960s stuff realising that groups such as The Supremes, Martha and The Vandellas, Chiffons, were true talents. My fav British 0s girl singers are Lulu, Dusty Springfield, Sandy Shaw (Lulu being favourite cos shes dead cute!). Oops in my original comment I forgot two of the greats being Buddy Holly and Mr Rock n Roll aka Chuck Berry.
I was born in Dec57 always loved Rock n Roll/Rockabilly. My fav of all time is and always will be Elvis, and my fav British is Billy Fury. I have loads music by such greats as Roy Orbison,Gene Vincent,Eddie Cochran,Platters,Cliff Richard,Shadows etc etc. My wife and I have seen Shakin Stevens and I think he could stand alongside the original greats. I remember as a kid of 6 declaring I was a 'mod' with my fab four guitar, but my first love always been Rock n Roll.
Who slapped John? The same one that shot Sam. Sleepy la Beef is the human jukebox that's been playing rockabilly for decades. Met him once at the Grand Opera House. Nice guy.
I don't know who you are Annee but thanx for posting all this great Rockabilly...posted 4 of your Gene Vincents to my favorites to day....Now for 10,000 points...WHO IS SLEEPY LA BEEF!
No to what I read and from the pictures available, apparently a 1955 Gretsch Duo Jet (with fidelatone/dynasonic pickups) and a stationary Bigsby B3. Not too sure about the amp: some say Standel 25l15 (Grady Martin's) some say Fender. I think the tone may also be due to the guitar setup, flat wound strings, the type of bridge (melita?), metal finger plecs but of course this unique way of playing that Cliff had.
@drummercrazycaps I'm always amused at you guys who identify all the instruments and equipment, sometimes without commenting on the music itself - and the music is the whole point. I'm not putting it down, only observing. It's like car shows, guys talk all about a 300 this or a four that.. think who gives a blank? The cars are like beautiful women. The joy comes in looking at them and not analyzing what's inside them!
@bumblebeemoi In this instance the comment was from a musician perspective...incidently Cliff Gallup had this unique talent and also the best sound out of this guitar hence this interest of most guitarist. I personally have known this song since around 1978 and still listen to it along with the rest of the Blue Jean Bop album...People forget this was 1956 and no one came close to this to date...
Just hearing him really now .Beatles, Jeff Beck etc big fans. McCartneys brother tells interesting story of him being tough, and scary when he met him in the early days. it's in his book 'remember' thanks for the posts!
Gene Vincent drove a White '55 white T-Bird with a black top. the car slung so low that when he drove it the floor pan would hit the pavement when he hit a bump.
i dont know if he ever did, just read his book, THE DAY THE WORLD TURNED BLUE,and no mention, i do know the beatles loved him from the start, and were stoked to meet him, especially Lennon he idolised Gene and his music..cheers mate,
gene vincent to rockabilly is like what black sabbath is to metal or what the damned are to punk or johnny cash to country/rock n roll. Hes one of those people if you want to start an interest in the music Gene is the starting point
Vincent the starting point in rabilly? But you have some more. Early Eddie Cochran, Elvis on SUN, Carl Perkins. Dale Hawkins etc. But Vincent is a very good choice.
The best part about Gene & the early Blue Caps stuff is that they sound like they're about to spin completely out of control at any second, and you can really tell on this one.
I was listening to this stuff to learn guitar 35 yrds ago....I read an interview with one of the Blue caps and the volume control they used when recroding was to open or close the door a bit !! the band were so liud they played in the next room to gene Vincent..that's ho the recording has that great spacey airey live sound.
Whenever I see old film of The Bluecaps they come across as a gang, unfettered, exuberant, lost in what they're creating..as a teenager you'd wanna be in that gang and not working in some factory; you certainly wouldn't care whether the f***ing words rhymed or not.
Most rock and pop songs have badly rhyming lyrics, the fact remains though that no modern music comes anywhere near the raw excitement of old classics like this, so we should just enjoy it for what it is instead of looking for perfect poetry

Great song, great drum riffs! Such "bad boys" while still wearing chinos & polo shirts vs leather & tshirts when Brando's "On The Waterfront" hit the media!

They backed Gene many times, and nearly became his backing group.
If you research the Beatles you will find Gene was one of their main influences in music.
