Kim Il Sung didn't trigger the war, the Southern army under Syungman Lee did.

The North Korean army invaded the South. There was NO US MILITARY in the South at the time.

Actually, there has ALWAYS been a contingent of the US Army in S. Korea since September 8, 1945. From that very day to right NOW. However, from June 30, 1949 to June 28, 1950 the US Army only had a 500-man KMAG unit assigned to S. Korea.
