Steinbeck (the author) actually hinted that Lennie was insane, not just slow or handicapped. Also, Curley's wife is known as "jailbait" in the sense that she's a seductress and will not only get men fired, but could get them killed. Now, could you live with that kind of loneliness? Wouldn't you take any company you could get?
