  • Hey Robin, Thanks for this Video. I am getting a new 817nd in next 3 days and this helped take the edge off of waiting. It was very informative and that combined with your wee bit of an accent made for a great experience

    Thank you, Ron KB3VEW

  • Hola amigo muy bueno el radio pero ¿se pueden escuchar bandas comerciales? ya sea radio nederland, internacional de china, nhk japón en las bandas hf,adios.

  • I have one of these and I live in Edinburgh too. Can't say I particularly like it. I feel the menu system and other controls are a bit complex.

  • nice tx/rx qrp

  • i do need 1 in portugal ^^

  • he didn't even stop for an ironbru..........!

thanks for vid i am trying to decide wether to buy this or vrx8e

  • I just got the FT-817, awesum radio. Just getting a temp HF listening wire up to get used to HF and get used to the rig. My other rig is a Yaesu VX-3E 2/70 that I use for /P /M. Cant wait to try it in its full

    M6PST

  • nice vid

    love your voice

  • Nice radio, may buy one myself. Adam, M3VOJ

  • I have far too many radios, (about 40 Yaesus) the FT817 is one of my favourites bizarrely. Receiver keels over on a big aerial but seen the same with 857 and 897 but I forgive the FT817 since if i am running from AA cells the 200ft tower is unlikely to be available! (I don't have a 200ft tower but have access to comms mast in my job). Lovely little radio, Yaesu take the p*** with the price of their batteries so best cut the green wire to the holder and use NiMH cells in it.

  • Good buy, worth the money !

One of the most sold radios here in Japan,

excellent for traveling -- low power consumption

but still All-Mode ! Outperforms any other handheld radio !!!

  • Great and informative video! Thanks for posting!

  • Hiya Robin. I think ur vids are brill..... ive yet to get my licence but i will certainly get myself one of these ft817,s. Kevin9267

  • i dont have a license but i DO have a FT-817ND :) i use it for rx on lot's of stuff, digi modes, sstv psk rtty and stuff on 20/40/80/160 and also alot of sat stuff like decoding telemetry and weather fax sat's :) and listening to various ham sats it's a nice radio, i have it modded a bit to rx/tx on CB and PMR also ;)

  • An interesting tidbit: Walter Cronkite, KB2GSD, has an 817, and he demos it in a report on amateur radio that can be viewed on You Tube. Great vid, search for it!

    Mike, KC9PFH

  • The 817, like all Yaesu products, is a fine radio. Not much of a QRP guy myself, so it isn't for me, but a great rig nevertheless. Home you enjoy it.

    73!

    Mike KC9PFH

  • Nice radio, could you please make a video of this rig playing the FM 88-108 band and play some good stations in your area.

  • Thanks for the vid, i brought the 817nd last year and im incredibly impressed with it, your vid shows ppl whats the radio is like and there def isnt enough vids on youtube for it

  • Does this radio still revice audio(signal) with the mic unplugged? To be used to SWL?

  • Yeah the radio still works without the microphone plugged in

  • Gee, I went all out Robin. I bought the 817nd........ then a ldg auto tuner, then a buddipole, then a packer battery and lastly, a internal dsp.

I sold something and had a once in a life time chance for all this.

    What a fun radio indeed!

  • Thanks for the post I'm just about to buy one.

  • Hi Robin, I just bought a ft-817nd via mail order here in Canada, it should be here in 5 days ;)

    I am very excited.

  • I know how you feel!!

You have made a great choice, but remember to keep at it lol the first few days getting used to it can be a bit tricky, menu wise.

Anyway make sure to look after, Have fun!

    73 Robin

  • Canadians are arrogant? :(

I'm Canadian and I'm not arrogant.

Nice video though, I enjoyed it very much.... and am in the process of buying a ft 817.

  • I am sorry but i wasn't suggesting that Canadians are arrogant, the poster who i said that to was trying to be ignorant by saying that i was Austrialian infact Scottish!

He didn't take the time to try and understand my accent, everyone has got one,

The reason i mentioned Canada was because if someone mistook him for a Canadian who would take great offence! I was just trying to add to his Irony there.

I have never been but i would like to go, Sorry for the offence caused.

  • You did a GREAT job describing this radio. My husband and I have several radios, he is into them very much so. Thanks for what you share here.

  • where can I find a good tutorial on the break down...I can't hardly understand what you saying...you austrilian?

  • Oh Sorry i never knew you are Canadian and why should i point you in the right direction after that?

Everyone has accents and if i came over to Canada would i understand you?!

You people over there are really arrogant!! A lesson, Think First before speaking!

I would never say that to anyone and go find it yourself you lazy git!

  • Nice Video nice little TRX!

  • I did my first HF contact on this with a G5RV...south of france.

It,s a nice pice of kit for 2m/77 and HF, could do with being 10 or 25 w.

  • very interesting thanks , just getting into ham , have been advised to buy one of these so your vid is very helpfull cheers

  • I love my FT-817... Mine is converted to use R/C nicad battery pack and I bring it with me everywhere I go...

  • Very interesting video, despite what some people have said here. Handy for people thinking of getting one of these units.

  • Cheers Mate

    Your comments are always valued!

    Robin

  • It's a crap video! Whats the point of showing it off when you havent even used it yet??

  • You are a complete idiot!!

What has it got to do with you!

You are the type of people who give youtube a bad name!

You are not even a ham! Probally still craping yourself over the morse test!!

    So F**K OFF!

  • Show's how much you know about ham radio, you don't have to do the morse test anymore because it is old hat. You really havent got a clue, but then again you are scottish!!

  • I know that any person does not need to do the morse code test but since YOU know that you don't have to do the morse test. Makes me shocked that you are infact more intelligent than a sewer rat!

So go back home to the sewer where you belong and infact this will be reported to youtube for racism

  • I'M TELLING!! you are so childish!

  • ME!

This wouldn't even have started if you did not post in the first place!!

I give people a chance to give comments on any video even if it is good or bad, However it was your bad attitude i did not like.

Infact YOU are childish just because you are jealous!

  • I don't even know you!

Maybe it's time to go back to the mental hospital after your day release!

  • I bought it for £350

    Cheers for the comment

  • Easy!

The point of the video was for a look around not for sound quality plus what is the VHF and UHF antenna going to pick up on HF?

    Not very likely MR.EagleEye!

  • The FT-817ND is a nice little rig. I have one. Only wish the display was larger, not easy to read with or without my glasses. Also just too much in the box. I use very little of it's capabilities. Strictly CW with a manual key on 15 thru 40 meters. So you see I could make do with less features. Still, I really like the little guy and will always keep one. 73 N2UGB

  • how much is it

  • yes my radio yaesu ft-817nd super QRP all mod. transceiver perfect. __73's...

  • Going to get one of these when I get my licence so thanks for the video! Have you got the HF sorted out? If how does it work on HF?

    Peter

  • Well i could say you are in luck! My Big 10 watt out the box Alinco Dx 70 died on me the same day you posted this, lol

Well now i sit in the shack with this on because i don't have any other HF radios and it does a great job on RX, The sound is perfect and quality also. Mind you i do try to put a call out but there is no skip to do so.

Keep a look out for a HF video on the FT-817 ;)

  • 2E1JFJ

This is a briliant little radio, it's the only radio I own, and the only one you will ever need, stick an amp on it if you want, but I've hit Tazmainia on 5watts! Does RTTY with MixW a treat too!

    Exelent video and radio

  • Will an amp kill the radio's finals?

  • you need to get a good one, there are quite a few that are reccomended for the 817.

  • 2E0BNC

I have been thinking about geting one the yeasu. I run an alinco for 2 metres and 70 cms. The only downside is the lack of power.

How long dose the battery last ?

  • Depends on how long you can charge it for the Minimum is 6 hours and the Maximum is 8 hours.

So it lasts between about 12 hours with very limited power about 2.5 watts but heavy use on 5 watts expect about 7 hours plus, on the radio at the left hand side you can see the voltage meter which does come in handy.

  • I was thinking about getting one of these once I get my general, but, with a max power output of 5 watts, it is very limited in it's use. A great QRP rig, but, I think I will save my money and put it towards a Icom 708mkII or a ft-857 or similar 100 watt radio.

  • Great piece of technology/gadget!!! 73's and good DX!!!

  • very good radio...

  • It's BLURPLE dammit!!!

    ; )

  • Nice vid, nice radio and hope you've had fun qrp/m up on the hills. I'm going to buy one of these in the next few months. 73 John G0RGU.

  • I hope to be out on the hills this year lol.

I Just use the radio in the house for scanning and TX'ing on 2m and 70cm

  • Great overview. Thanks! Considering one of these rigs and I also think they are somewhat confusing (I am *not* an engineer). haha. 73, Mike

  • You will get used to it like me

    Cheers the comment 73's

  • Thanks bro. Good vid

  • The 857 can also have about a 30 color combo too

  • I wish it did have a few more colours just to brighten it up.

  • Sweet as a nut! - great vid and great commentary - even this Englander could understand you;-) No freezing here by the way. I trust we'll see a few more then I won't have to keep pm'ing you. - get some wire out for it though.

    73 Steve

  • No freezing here :)

It can happen with you tube and the buffering of it :(

  • Excellent vid, Good tour of the radio :)

  • Cheers Callum!

Don't know if it froze on you?
