hey robin, thankyou for the video bought a 817 today when i get the radio this video wii be agreat help to me,from william,73s N.Ireland.also robin can you put a hustler hf 6 band amateur radio antenna into the 817.
Hey Robin, Thanks for this Video. I am getting a new 817nd in next 3 days and this helped take the edge off of waiting. It was very informative and that combined with your wee bit of an accent made for a great experience
Hola amigo muy bueno el radio pero ¿se pueden escuchar bandas comerciales? ya sea radio nederland, internacional de china, nhk japón en las bandas hf,adios.
I just got the FT-817, awesum radio. Just getting a temp HF listening wire up to get used to HF and get used to the rig. My other rig is a Yaesu VX-3E 2/70 that I use for /P /M. Cant wait to try it in its full
I have far too many radios, (about 40 Yaesus) the FT817 is one of my favourites bizarrely. Receiver keels over on a big aerial but seen the same with 857 and 897 but I forgive the FT817 since if i am running from AA cells the 200ft tower is unlikely to be available! (I don't have a 200ft tower but have access to comms mast in my job). Lovely little radio, Yaesu take the p*** with the price of their batteries so best cut the green wire to the holder and use NiMH cells in it.
i dont have a license but i DO have a FT-817ND :) i use it for rx on lot's of stuff, digi modes, sstv psk rtty and stuff on 20/40/80/160 and also alot of sat stuff like decoding telemetry and weather fax sat's :) and listening to various ham sats it's a nice radio, i have it modded a bit to rx/tx on CB and PMR also ;)
An interesting tidbit: Walter Cronkite, KB2GSD, has an 817, and he demos it in a report on amateur radio that can be viewed on You Tube. Great vid, search for it!
Thanks for the vid, i brought the 817nd last year and im incredibly impressed with it, your vid shows ppl whats the radio is like and there def isnt enough vids on youtube for it
I am sorry but i wasn't suggesting that Canadians are arrogant, the poster who i said that to was trying to be ignorant by saying that i was Austrialian infact Scottish!
He didn't take the time to try and understand my accent, everyone has got one,
The reason i mentioned Canada was because if someone mistook him for a Canadian who would take great offence! I was just trying to add to his Irony there.
I have never been but i would like to go, Sorry for the offence caused.
Show's how much you know about ham radio, you don't have to do the morse test anymore because it is old hat. You really havent got a clue, but then again you are scottish!!
I know that any person does not need to do the morse code test but since YOU know that you don't have to do the morse test. Makes me shocked that you are infact more intelligent than a sewer rat!
So go back home to the sewer where you belong and infact this will be reported to youtube for racism
The FT-817ND is a nice little rig. I have one. Only wish the display was larger, not easy to read with or without my glasses. Also just too much in the box. I use very little of it's capabilities. Strictly CW with a manual key on 15 thru 40 meters. So you see I could make do with less features. Still, I really like the little guy and will always keep one. 73 N2UGB
Well i could say you are in luck! My Big 10 watt out the box Alinco Dx 70 died on me the same day you posted this, lol
Well now i sit in the shack with this on because i don't have any other HF radios and it does a great job on RX, The sound is perfect and quality also. Mind you i do try to put a call out but there is no skip to do so.
This is a briliant little radio, it's the only radio I own, and the only one you will ever need, stick an amp on it if you want, but I've hit Tazmainia on 5watts! Does RTTY with MixW a treat too!
Depends on how long you can charge it for the Minimum is 6 hours and the Maximum is 8 hours.
So it lasts between about 12 hours with very limited power about 2.5 watts but heavy use on 5 watts expect about 7 hours plus, on the radio at the left hand side you can see the voltage meter which does come in handy.
I was thinking about getting one of these once I get my general, but, with a max power output of 5 watts, it is very limited in it's use. A great QRP rig, but, I think I will save my money and put it towards a Icom 708mkII or a ft-857 or similar 100 watt radio.
Sweet as a nut! - great vid and great commentary - even this Englander could understand you;-) No freezing here by the way. I trust we'll see a few more then I won't have to keep pm'ing you. - get some wire out for it though.
Can you show operation of the FM mode on the 88-108 MHz band?

Good buy, worth the money !
One of the most sold radios here in Japan,
excellent for traveling -- low power consumption
but still All-Mode ! Outperforms any other handheld radio !!!

The 817, like all Yaesu products, is a fine radio. Not much of a QRP guy myself, so it isn't for me, but a great rig nevertheless. Home you enjoy it.

Gee, I went all out Robin. I bought the 817nd........ then a ldg auto tuner, then a buddipole, then a packer battery and lastly, a internal dsp.
I sold something and had a once in a life time chance for all this.
What a fun radio indeed!
