My old Salzburg recording with Brigitte Fassbaender and Hermann Prey might have topped this vocally, but not by a lot. Really fine work, and good acting, too.
Words can't even describe how gorgeous this is! No one will be able to top these too - they are perfect and I second the person that said only Mozart could have written something this beautiful. And SImon Keenlyside's Guglielmo...no wonder Dorabella caved! :-)
Check out the her video 'I can be a sexy lady' here on you tube. She pokes fun at all her 'pants' roles. Does being a nun in Dead Man Walking count as wearing a dress? She will always be my favorite Sesto.
I saw her sing Donna Elvira yesterday! How's that for a dress role? "Mi tradi" was lowered a half step, but it was a nice change of pace. The conductor rushed it, though. After the opera, I went to the stage door and she was so nice!
Haha, I just realized that the director made a great effort to disguise the fact that Susan Graham is about half a head taller than Simon Keenlyside (having her lean backwards, having him stand on the platform, etc.). Nice work.
I do love the voices, and this is the first version of this duet I heard, so I will always be biased towards it. But this is a really hard scene (acting-wise) for Guglielmo, because he has to be conflicted between being seductive and feeling sorry for his friend. Keenlyside plays up the latter a lot more, and the Guglielmo in the Berlin production plays up the former. I think Luca Pisaroni in the Glyndebourne production acted this scene the best. But no one has anything on Simon's voice!
Il core vi dono/bell'idolo mio/ma il vostro vo' anch'io/via datelo a me Me 'l date lo prendo/ma il mio non vi rendo/invan me 'l chiedete/più meco ei non è. Se teco non l'hai/perché batte qui? Se a me tu lo dai/che mai balza lì? È il mio coricino/che più non è meco/ei venne a star teco/e batte così. Qui lascia che il metta! Ei qui non può star! Ti intendo furbetta! Che fai? Non guardar! (the other part is in the next comment)
This duet is ingeniously composed. Their harmonies are laced together so well, and the "beats" in the orchestra section during the text about their hearts beating add so much! This whole piece just shows that they are made for each other. How does this production end, though?
I remember Simon arriving at the RNCM in about 1983. First presentation class of the year with a venerable lady of Scottish descent taking the class. I was in my last year and Simon was in his first year Post Grad. Never seen him or heard of him before that day, but the first time will stay with me until my dying day. He sang "Ah! per sempre io ti perdei" from Puritani. It was sublime - a moment akin to the time I heard Hvorostovski sing "Ombra mai Fu" in Cardiff six years later.
cosi is such beautiful music, and keenlyside is an absolute god, the best british baritone of our time i would say. mozarts duets are such fun to sing!
Perfect singing & acting. Graham and Keenlyside give this duet full justice, but the duet is still a dog (sorry, Wolfgang). The tenor-soprano duet later in the show...Goodness, now THAT duet is genius (bravo, Wolfgang).
Thanks. actually I really like this duet. it is simple and charming and I love Keenlyside & Graham voice.
But I will post the "Fra gli amplessi" duet from the same production with Susan Chilcott & Rainer Trost. They were very good (weel, I am not a big fan of Trost). I will post it in the current of next week.
EXCUSE ME! The duet is just perfect. Like the whole freaking opera. 3 hours of the most beautiful music EVER. If this duet is "lighter" than the tenor-soprano, it is because of the character`s psicology, which mozart could PERFECTLY paint.
@E19103 The music is "shallower" here (but still achingly beautiful) because Dorabella and Guglielmo are shallower than Fiordiligi and Ferrando. Mozart was a dramatic as well as musical artist and wrote music to match the characters. This is my favorite rendition of this duet.
This is an all star cast in my opinion. My two favorite singers.

I'd fall for Guglielmo anytime in this rendition...
The moves and vocals of Simon Keenlyside here is... dangerous. Irresistable.. I'd give in... again and again...
And what an erotic Masterpiece from Mozart...

Just my words...
Salzburg 1974 is close to unbeatable vocally but this is damn good, I might add..

This is splendid. I wish that a difference between batte qui e balza li were shown more openly, becouse I can hear it in the music , and singing.
