Wayne Grudem should check out Greg Boyds sermon series 'The Cross and the Sword' and then answer. Greg Boyd doesn't say Christians can't be police or in the military, also if Satan doesn't have authority over all the nations then Jesus isn't really being tempted. Jesus could have said, you can't offer me anything you don't have, but he doesn't!! Fortunately, this is not a salvation issue just a matter of 2 men who teach certain things differently!! They both agree Jesus is our salvation!!
Respectfully, I, being one who listens to Greg Boyd, but does not believe all that he believes, feel as though this response to his book misses the point of the book. In listening to Boyd, I do not believe that Greg Boyd feels we should dismantle the government or that it and its laws don't have their place. I feel his point was to challenge Christians not to get so caught up in the political process that we miss that God calls us to do: preach the gospel and be the hands and feet of God!
The problem with applying Romans 13 to the American experiment, is that it undermines OUR form of Government, which is supposed to be "of the people, by the people and for the people." If we were to correctly apply Romans 13, then it is the Government (or officials) that would submit to the PEOPLE rather than the People to the REPRESENTATIVE OFFICIALS. Wayne...you need to learn to view things outside of your agenda-driven interpretative lens.
Grudem's assessment of Boyd's book is poor and somewhat misleading. He suggest that the idea of power under vs power over comes only from Luke 4. This of course is a little deceptive. I'm sure he does not mean to be. His animosity towards Boyd shows through and his dismissal of his non violent approach to world is a fairly low tactic. Grudem oozes self righteousness - a little humility next time Dr Grudem.
