@krosero my mistake hard to tell no color grass is best 90% true bounce which makes it really interesting on the other hand these days I might say clay so a point is not over in 2 seconds
@TheKPRZ well look up the Rod laver interview he did with the Aussie open last week or so, like Laver said, back then it was just amateur tennis... Looking back you can see just how much the game has developed
Amazing how much McEnroe plays like Laver. I knew Laver was his idol, but now I can really see the influence. McEnroe was great because he stood on the shoulders of giants...
@MrRalphNadal Elol. That was more in Tilden's era, except they were already wearing the pants. Why is the history of tennis a contest, the rackets changed and so did the game
@MrRalphNadal You're a fucking moron. With wood raquets, and a rule that stated you were not allowed to lift your front foot before making contact, why would anybody bend low before striking the ball? And I'm gonna surmise Rod Laver was twice as athletic as you could ever be...
I think if you brought Laver forward in a time machine he would be top 10 within two years. Would take him a little while to adjust to the new racket.
I used to love hitting hard, but my dad scolded me saying that where you want to place the ball is more important than power. After watching this video, I know why.
@IvanAndreevich Rosewall's serve was one of his weaknesses he is a lefty playing righty. As a little kid starting with two hands he liked swinging away from his body and thus the great righty one handed slice backhand. He was about 38 when all the pros voted on who had the best shots in the game. He came in second in the backhand and backhand volley.
I left out one more artist who came to the level of Laver and Rosewall; that was John Mac Enroe. Fantastic arsenal of all kinds of shots. He was the modern version of Laver, more lethal at the net, and serve.
Need to have more clips from these two. They made the perfect match to watch and appreciate how wonderful tennis can be. Nobody today comes close to either one. Exception could have been Federer , but his backhand and net game are still weak compared to Rosewall and Laver. Maybe Kenny could help him to flatten his backhand a bit more for penetration during rallies .
I was there watching and scoring this final from inside the scoreboard at the eastern end. We ball-boys did more than just chase tennis balls and ball-girls around you know. This was pure tennis. No tantrums, umpire & racquet abuse. These guys were about 5'8" tall. They finessed the ball and were great tacticians. Unfortunately the end of Australia's domination of world tennis was near. Enter Connors, Borg & McEnroe. Some great memories watching this. Still have my autograph collection from '70
man "The Rocket" had some game......I went out and hit some with my old Jack Kramer Pro Staff, and had a hard time connecting with the two-handed backhand. I had to pretty much hit slice on that side to hit the ball anywhere near the sweetspot. I play with the Nadal racket these days, so talk about a humbling experience! Most "modern day" juniors (and adults) who never played with wood rackets, have no clue how difficult it is compared to today's sticks. Laver and Rosewall were amazing.
@theatlantean1 I know how hard it is to play with a wood racket. I bought one from ebay and played with it for the first time last night. It's like driving a car with no power steering. Absolutely no give, and you are using every bit of your own power and strength. I know swinging with those heavy sticks will make me better with the modern stick.
Tell you this.....it gave me brand spanking new respect for Laver and Rosewall. Those shots they made with those peanut head rackets defy logic.
Overall head to head between Laver and Rosewall, including all registered and accredited tournament play is very close to Laver 80 to Rosewall 70. They played each other no less than 150 times in all tournaments. Each played in 14 major singles finals; Laver winning 11 [including 2 calender grand slams], and Rosewall winning 8, including 2 in one year - 1972, the Australian and US Opens. Laver's calender grand slams[2] should have been matched by Federer, except for friggin' dago, Nadal.
classic serve and volley! I love it! So much good touch. The last decade was the great nadal and federer and agassi era, with their brilliant groundstrokes. but i get tired of them after watching them. it's a nice change here. this new era, we're getting into the power generation, where a big serve and a big forehand may be enough to win a grand slam, or at least gets close. currently, the only people stopping del potro, soderling, berdych, et al. from winning everything are nadal ,possibly fed.
thanx for upload, this is simply beatiful tennis, so hard to execute with that small wooden rackets
Laver, Tilden, Borg and Pancho Gonzalez were the best during the 'wooden' era, unfortunately Tilden's and Pancho's matches are almost completely unavailable
