It is called a "crumple zone". The car is designed to absorb the shock of impact by "squishing" like foam (only it stays that way).

Like this car would be considered totaled after this.. @jfdyj It all depend's on the way you hit, this is like crashing a car into a brick wall at 35 mph. Almost any car will be gone at that speed. The easiest thing to do is get full coverage insurance because you never know what kind of wreck you will have. Most car's would be totaled in a 35 mph crash like this, not just the Fusion

@jfdyj the speeds are usually like 35-40 mph, and take into consideration that its like a concrete wall.. if you get into an accident the other car will give way also, reducing you're impact, unless you hit a train hhaha

@alexkvaskov no it doesn't quite hit the dummy after re-bounds but it is near the dummy. the airbag stays re-inflated for 5 seconds incase the car is hit again.

Yes, its an innovation from Ford called the Dual Stage Airbag System. The airbags will adjust their deployment parameters to size, weight, position and restraint status of the occupant. By doing this, injury directly related to the airbag is near 0.

Airbags have injured many people before even WITH wearing your seat belt, for exapme, if an airbag deplays to late, the drivers head will come to close to the sterring wheel and will inflate, possibly injuring his nose, chin ext..., So you are wrong with that fact
