  • Would be the English empire then (which I've always said, still do) not the British, since British means (and includes) the English, the Scottish & the Welsh. In this case the Scottish suggests they were the driving force, which is interesting enough I suppose. (:

Great series and thanks for the uploads, much appreciated.

  • If you live in America look for a family history center near you. It is like a libary outpost. You can request all sorts of genealogical books and records on loan from their main location in Salt Lake city. You can google it to find the outpost nearest you and it is all free.

  • beautiful weather lol

  • It's amazing what sorts of paper you can find. I discovered an ancestor's US Civil War service by finding his second wife's claim for a pension due to an injury he had suffered while serving in the Army. It gave the name of his unit and where he fought and was injured, and with that information, I was able to get his service records.

  • Sounds less like he just wanted to go home, and more like he suffered a bit of heat exhaustion or heat stroke... or reasons why you could no longer serve well in a hot climite.

  • Public libraries subscribe to Ancestry Library Edition. I live in the Us and my local library subcribes to Ancestry Library Edition. Roots web has family trees, and gen forums has has many forums for surnames and places.

  • those sites like familysearch, are they free forever no matter what?

  • im doing my own family tree but seeing as i dont have the money nor am fluent in certain languages, i am at a stump...if im rich, im gonna do what ian does and find out my whole family as far back as i can =)

    x

  • You don't need that much money, there's loads of stuff on the internet, websites, newsgroups etc.

  • well like most of my family is in another country whereas I was born in england and dont have the skills to go to another country and find out in another language.

  • Hmm, didn't seem to post first time - may be due to the web addresses. Will disguise them ie replace dot with .

    I see your problem.

I don't know a lot about available resources outside the UK. The Latter Day Saints' website familysearchdotcom is a good place to start. ancestrydotcom and rootswebdotancestrydotcom are also good.

Hope you get the riches (and a translator) to do all the research and travelling you want!

  • well i can imagine that these sites will ask for money straight away or after a free trial.

tried it with ancestry and its a good website but i dont wanna pay money...i look for the free stuff ^_^

  • Quite right too, so do I!

familysearch and rootsweb are both free, as are the newsgroups (eg Yahoo!).

  • What languages? And whence is your family?

  • well im born in england but im indian. the only language i know properly is english. most of my family on both sides of the family are in india, just a few over here in the uk.
