I got this bass yesterday from my cousin, its the same thing but mines black with a blue pickguard, has same knows, pickup and the whole deal. Plus, he gave me a coffin case for my guitar, so i was about to explode with hapiness
@lothianbass@basslinerxx I think it's important to remember that this was recorded with a mic in a digital camera. So the tone will be missing a lot of the low end fundamentals. I always use La Bella flats, can't beat them for feel and tone. But yes, tone is highly subjective. I don't have any of this gear now anyway. Plus, a lot of the gear was being unused, so it was a simple experiment that proves that good tone is easy to achieve with little relative financial outlay compared to the cost o
Why on earth did you go through the trouble of modifying your bass extensively (with REALLY choice components), to then go and ruin the sound by using flatwounds??? I've got a 100% stock OLP with Ernie Ball roundwounds that sounds a lot better!
@LothianBass While I don't really enjoy the sound from my speakers here either, it's not because of the flats at least. In any case tone is completely subjective, one guy likes scooped mids slap, I personally hate it...To each his own, right? Kept my OLP pretty much stock aswell, modded it to single vol/single tone with a parallel/series switch for the pup, which is probably the easiest and cheapest thing you can do to it (and I have to say I find it very useful). And going to try flats on it :P
ive just got one of these basses off of ebay after years of searching but it comes with a john east preamp pickup ive never heard of a john east preamp can anyone tell me about them please
Hey i have a question, i own the olp copy of the sting ray 5 and it's missing some parts-including bridge saddles, the string tree at the headstock, the cable jack, the nut, and one of the strap buttons. Should i just spend the money and buy the parts i need to fix it (total=80 bucks give/take 5) or just but a new bass? I only payed 100 for the bass missing the parts, but otherwise its near perfect condition.
@Amegeri there is actually one near my drumers house in my band. so im thinking about getting it just to mod it. its only selling for like 200 bucks and its pretty good condition and its in light blue
Gotta love an OLP, man. how would you rate that 4 band is over a standard 3 band for the extra money? i've got a 2-band in my 'Ray copy and i'm contemplating an upgrade...
@tjmon666 The electronics are a little flat. Original Stingrays have better EQ systems obviously, but the the OLP's are just a cheap copy. So no active EQ etc. Modding them is quite inexpensive compared to the cost of a new Stingray and you get a really good tone for little financial outley.
@tjmon666 You'll have to get one whenever you see one dude because they stopped making them in 2009. Only found out today, Fucking sucks. Probably pick up the one in a local guitar store near me..

Really good job there! I'm considering buying the same pick-ups for my OLP. Which are the differences between the SMB-4a and the 4d?

Cheers mate, the OLP's are great basses for very little money, so modifying them makes sense :)
