It's a flashback as the whole game is based around this bomb they are trying to get, so when the flashback is over were trying to get this bomb from the Russians.

hey u guys this is a flashback it is the first mission in battlefield bad company 2. The reason for it is because u can see the guy on the sub holding this little container and if any other nerds besides me have been doing their research the whole campain is about getting this container which is supposed to be a secret weapon.
