Notice how most of the people ripping on the USA are americans themselves. Actually I'm one of you guys. Honestly I wish my family never left Germany. I'd be a rich man and I'd have the Gotha family crest hanging on a flagpole outside. But my family moved because America was the place to be (in 1919) So now my ancestors status can't be lived on and I'm now middle class. But living here I'm German by heart; Serious, pride of country (of germany)responsible. America is actually more of a Disney l
I was in charge of the barraks in Germany(I can say where) and it was sad how many of the young Americans are trashy and no respect for other countries, they will not obey simple rules and regulations and make the authorities piss off, the main problem is that many Americans are lazy, spoil brat and not responsible, period.
I pay around $250 (rent+utilities) for a house and I have 4 other room-mates (male and female). They all hated living in the dorms. They didn't have any privacy (sometimes the recruiters would bring possible new students with their families into their dorm to show it to them- with STUDENTS living in their) and during the breaks while they were away maintenance would rob their places and things would magically disappear. I think renting out with some people (that you know VERY WELL) works.
Actually I did not know that Flensburg has a university. I don't know if this says more about the university there or about me. In fact German universities cannot easily be compared with American ones, Germany has another academic elite system with Fraunhofer, Max Planck, Leibnitz and Helmholtz societies and in-enterprise education plays a way bigger role. A MIT bachelor is not much formidable , it's totally different with a master and beyond for sure.
you guys have so much freedom u can "have the sexy time" in peace,in india the guys cant even be near the girl's dorm gates, and you have these female cops patrolling and shit, people have to rent a room to have sex and then theres the curfew thing too, college life is not the same in india i gurantee you that
I don't dorm, but every one of my friends who do have cluttered, minuscule rooms--and four roommates. Also, as far as *privacy* goes: I know there's the occasional uninhabited dorm room you can get access to.
I lived in the dorms at the college in my hometown (Alberta, Canada) and basically they are mini stand-alone houses for four people. A big common living room and kitchen, then two people upstairs (separate rooms) with a bathroom, and two people downstairs (separate bedrooms) with a bathroom. There was even a big deep freeze. It was awesome and I'm well aware that I am spoiled. Waaay better than at the provincial Uni where you have to share a kitchen and bathrooms with 40 other people!
I invite all the dick heads making comments about nazi's to catch a plane ticket to Germany and suddenly grow up to modernity. Yes Ana, showers in europe are not considered as an majorly important thing, yes everybody has to be clean, but not be able to go in a shwer with a group of five. Yes Ana you are spoilled.
200 euros is like $375? My apartment is 400 but includes everything(cable, phone, water, electricity, trash) but I have to say I live only 6 miles from downtown east LA but other then that its cheap.
You Americans are insane. Sharing the same room? Wow... In the UK you rent out an entire room. The rent for the house is split, but not the rent for a room, you get the room to yourself.
The Mortal Combat-thing is pretty funny. Yet epic fail to have the old sex issue kill about 65% of the entire topic being discussed. By the way - I think it is noteworthy and kind of funny: The American student has this HUGE German flag in her dorm-room: If any GERMAN student would have such a flag in his or her room, it would totally freak out everyone else, and the rest of campus would think you are a nazi or something. ^^ Goes to show the very different attitudes towards "patriotism"...
@taxiuniversum It's not so much like that anymore, concerning the flag. Since Germany won the world cup in 2006, more ppl have been showing their flags, but it's not common like it is in America of course. Like you said, very different ideas on "patriotism" due to historical reasons.
At the 5 places in Texas where I've seen the dorms it was always just one room not quite as big as her bedroom, two people would live in it and it would cast each of them slightly less than a one-bedroom apartment in the same town. Shit, California must have some seriously upscale dorms.
if a guy yelled 'mortal combat' during sex with me i'd get more excited, idk about you guys. but fuck space, i need my own room. it can be a damn shoebox for all i care, but everyone deserves privacy. most universities don't give a fuck about that though.
I have lived in two different dorms now in Canada and that room would be for 2 people. that would be the cheapest one I guess. The best part about this place is 200 dollars! holy shit! I paid 7000 for two semesters.
Live off campus unless you have the mandatory rule for living on campus for a year and if you have the mandatory rule just get kicked out during the last week of the first semester for drinking inside your dorm or smoking cigarettes inside your dorm both work. Get written up twice or three times for drinking/smoking inside and they will kick you off campus. Some dorms are nice, but most are crappy places parents/kids pay for either for safety or the party environment.
The differences between German and American dorms?
One dorm is filled with students who attended excellent secondary schools, score extremely well on international standardized tests, and have a bright future in an export-based economy with strong unions, high taxes, low deficits, and massive, sustained infrastructure investment.
@manonthemount Haha, I agree, my country has no future! That's why I'm coming over on exchange next year! I can hardly wait to be in a country that actually works!
@manonthemount Thanks for the compliments. I'm German, but I feel like we're being overrated a little bit. Some of our communities are so broke by now, they don't even get credits from the bank any more.
In the international OECD education ranking, Germany scored anything but excellent, somewhere in the center and the EU is in a huge self-produced crisis right now. We all will see were Germany is five or ten years from now.
I agree with you - Germany faces quite a few economic problems, as well. But as far as the public infrastructure is concerned, as far as the feeling of responsibility of society towards everyone is concerned, and also when it comes to the rich contributing their fair share to common good, there are some advantages (thank God). In any case: We should use such comparisons preferably not so see who is better and envy, but to learn from each other, so that we ALL improve - TOGETHER.
Also, to add on to the dorm mate having sex discussion. If my dorm mate want to get some they better not mind third party viewing because I'm not going anywhere.
If my roommate's gettin' some poon, I'm not gonna go trying to kick him out. I have friends, I can crash on their floor. Why's everybody gotta be an asshole? haha
I love how she tried to generalize all dorm rooms in the United states. I can say that the dorm rooms at my University were built apartment style. Our dorms look much better and are larger than what she showed in the video. Though I must admit that private bdrm dorms cost about $350-400 month when you do the math. Like Jayar said... Central Michigan University must have the worst dorm rooms ever if she thinks her room in Germany is the bomb dot com.
That shower was NOT disastrous! My dorm was in an old mansion and our showers were communal, we had 5 stalls side by side for about 20 other girls. And they were so narrow that if you put your hands on your hip too fast you'd bump your elbow...that German shower was HUGE in comparison....oh and the bathroom had flickering lights, making the whole thing look like a scene from a horror movie.
I go to UoGuelph in Canada, I'm in a single. The room costs me $3000 grand a semester for a thing the size of my walk in closet at home. I cant wait to get off campus next year.
Ich bin in England fur Universitat weil es besser dann deutsche Universitat ist. Die deutsche Zimmer mogen besser als Englische Zimmer aber die Bildung ist nicht so gut auf Deutschland.
@JaguarXKJaguarXF You are in England for University where it is better than german univerity is. The german room much better then english room but the building is not so gut in Germany.
@JaguarXKJaguarXF depends very much on what u are studying german Law degree for example is the best u can get same goes for many of the scientific subjects like physics etc ... Dunno where u got that the english education at college is better but unless u dont attent Oxford or Camebridge I highly doudt that this is true
honestly i can't believe what the girl in the video is saying about her american dorm.... i think she is exaggerating. i studied abroad in poland, and those dorms were exactly like the girls german dorm, and it was great. 4 individual rooms, 2 bathrooms and one kitchen exactly like hers. I thought it was perfect. my dorm at the university of illinois was atleast triple that size and i had one roommate, he became my best friend and i had zero problems
@jumar1281 she's not exaggerating. the dorms at my school are like that. they weren't that small, maybe twice as big, but they still have 3-4 people in them. my current dorm is the same size as her room but i have a roommate. it depends on the school you go to.
At my university, her room would have been a room for two with a sink, mirror, and one large closet. No kitchen, though there was one on our floor.
The meal program at the dorms was pretty good, a nice variety, and all you can eat, so that wasn't a problem. Plus if you were a student who lived off campus, you could still eat at the dorm cafeteria pretty cheap.
I went to Central Michigan University. Sometimes, in the dorms called The Towers, they'd squeeze 5 room mates into a bedroom. And yes, those German showers look a lot bigger and better than the CMU bathrooms.
Yea I live in a triple roughly the size of the bedroom she showed and the majority of what I'm charged at my school is for the room and board. So yea, her 200 Euro room does look like pretty swanky to me right about now. Really the problem is not that her room is that great, but that students in the US live in ridiculously bad rooms for way too much. I like living on campus but I'm considering moving off and living in some rundown apartment because I don't think I can afford another year.
I'd guess her dorm bedroom is about 25 m^2 = 270 sq ft. I'd say that's decent.
I'm living in a similar student housing (but with private bathroom/shower) about 150 meters (ca 500 ft) from the main building where i study in Norway. We pay about $550-600 a month, electricity, 100Mbit fiberoptic internet, and cable TV included. Though when concidering the cost, keep in mind norway gives over $5000 a year in stipend (and an aditional ~10K in interrest-free while you study loans from the state).
@killshot123 You don't have to it's cheaper to have a roommate but i prefer my own place as well. Also a lot of people room up with high school friends which is a lot better then some stranger
I, personally, wouldn't call a German WG a dorm. They are usually private and not associated with the university and cater to families and non-students as well. It's more like an apartment building overrun by students.
Some universities have dorms, but I think they're mostly for visiting foreign students so they don't have to find their own housing in a strange, new country. The German gov is a real pain in the ass about registering everything little thing.
This is not a dorm room by American standards. This is what is called campus apartments on US campuses. It is a flat or apartment that has multiple rented bedrooms. And they cost a lot more than dorms.
As American student in Lithuania, my friends stay in dorms and they suck big time. They are worse that US dorms because they are even smaller and not big party places. However my friends from Poland expalined that in their dorms, there is always loads to drunk people no matter what time of day. A 24 hour beer store is always very close to each dorm, and its not so securitized so people can come freely with guests.
couple of things. Flensburg is hardly the German 'standard'. Its up north in the middle of nowhere so its understandable that its so cheap. Berlin is probably the anomaly among major German cities that is also incredibly cheap. Besides that Frankfurt, Munich etc are incredibly expensive.
Yeah, dorms in the US suck. And a lot of universities will still slip in dorm charges even if you choose to live off-campus. (Similar to how they can force dorm students to go on meal plans.) I pay $500/mo sharing an entire house with three other roommates, only share a bathroom with one of them. One of them and I went in together on a grill for our giant back deck bigger than this girl's whole flat, it's glorious. Anyway, just look around, avoid the dorms!
One more thing, Ana and J.R. you two got awefully of track here, if you want your segment on universites to be taken slightly serious stay on topic. Sure, those stories are nice and fun but come on that's in no way good journalism. Do some research, it would be damn easy to get some more intel on the pricing-situation of the dorms in germany and europe. Request more uservids or browse this mindblowing thing called the internet. You want to be news 2.0 ? Try to use your medium a little more...
The usual dorm-room-size here in germany usualy goes between 10-16 m² (one room for one person in a shared apartment) and the prices are somewhere between 150 to 230 Euro a month (including all sidecosts and Internet). And as far as I know, there are no shared bedrooms here. I lived in one of those rooms for about 3 years together with 3 other roommates ( first year with 3 girls was actually quiet nice, oh yeah, I'm guy), we had 2 showers, 3 Toilets and shared a kitchen.
Actually, most of the dorms I've been in are the size of her room, but with 2-4 people. You get maybe two steps between the beds and share a bathroom and tiny kitchen with the floor.
I don't really think this is an American vs. German issue (except for the cost), but there are plenty of nice dorms at American Universities...perhaps they are better at private universities.
I see a German flag. But were's her American flag? Doesn't she want to represent for the country that ripped her off while she was trying to get an education?
A dorm that big for just 200, holly crap. Take her bed room, cut it in half and put a bunk bed in there and that's a dorm at UNL and it will be about 400-600 a month. You couldn't find an appartment that's 1 bedroom for less than 600 in this state. I would kill for a 3 bedroom 2 bath for 200 a month. Utilities could be 500 and I would still jump at it. I mean holly fuck that's insane.
Where I go to school, you would have two people in a room her size and it would be $8,000 a year, which was for the room and your meals.

Agree with Jayar. She was hyping the shit out of that room. And that shower? Could a shower BE any smaller? I mean it looks usable and all, but damn.
Mezc0 3 months ago
I don't get why Ana is complaining about the shower, it looks really fresh, and pretty large, like the thing you'd have in a regular home.

I'm German and studied here. Thanks for the compliments, Kate! I feel like we Germans are getting showered with flowers on TYT in the last weeks.
But that's also why I would like to keep it real a bit.
My dorm was a single-room dorm, from the outside like a concrete box and really modest from the inside.
The bathroom was more of a cell, maybe 5 times 5 foot wide, and entirely made of plastic, pretty much like an airplane bathroom.
These are the downsides of studying for free.

That shower was NOT disastrous! My dorm was in an old mansion and our showers were communal, we had 5 stalls side by side for about 20 other girls. And they were so narrow that if you put your hands on your hip too fast you'd bump your elbow...that German shower was HUGE in comparison....oh and the bathroom had flickering lights, making the whole thing look like a scene from a horror movie.

dorms in usa are way smaller than that in general. minimum, you would have two people for that room.

honestly i can't believe what the girl in the video is saying about her american dorm.... i think she is exaggerating. i studied abroad in poland, and those dorms were exactly like the girls german dorm, and it was great. 4 individual rooms, 2 bathrooms and one kitchen exactly like hers. I thought it was perfect. my dorm at the university of illinois was atleast triple that size and i had one roommate, he became my best friend and i had zero problems
jumar1281 3 months ago
@jumar1281 she's not exaggerating. the dorms at my school are like that. they weren't that small, maybe twice as big, but they still have 3-4 people in them. my current dorm is the same size as her room but i have a roommate. it depends on the school you go to.
Cuddlebunzzzz 3 months ago
A german "WG" as shown in this video is not a dorm.
Anubispop2 3 months ago

Pff rooms in Ghent in Belgium are sooo expensive !
GranataGrace 3 months ago
This is not a dorm room by American standards. This is what is called campus apartments on US campuses. It is a flat or apartment that has multiple rented bedrooms. And they cost a lot more than dorms.
youngbuck189 3 months ago
As American student in Lithuania, my friends stay in dorms and they suck big time. They are worse that US dorms because they are even smaller and not big party places. However my friends from Poland expalined that in their dorms, there is always loads to drunk people no matter what time of day. A 24 hour beer store is always very close to each dorm, and its not so securitized so people can come freely with guests.
youngbuck189 3 months ago
couple of things. Flensburg is hardly the German 'standard'. Its up north in the middle of nowhere so its understandable that its so cheap. Berlin is probably the anomaly among major German cities that is also incredibly cheap. Besides that Frankfurt, Munich etc are incredibly expensive.

shaedies 3 months ago

I have no idea how Americans put up with sharing bedrooms
starfucker00 3 months ago 3
The usual dorm-room-size here in germany usualy goes between 10-16 m² (one room for one person in a shared apartment) and the prices are somewhere between 150 to 230 Euro a month (including all sidecosts and Internet). And as far as I know, there are no shared bedrooms here. I lived in one of those rooms for about 3 years together with 3 other roommates ( first year with 3 girls was actually quiet nice, oh yeah, I'm guy), we had 2 showers, 3 Toilets and shared a kitchen.
Gucknmermal 3 months ago

Actually, most of the dorms I've been in are the size of her room, but with 2-4 people. You get maybe two steps between the beds and share a bathroom and tiny kitchen with the floor.

I don't really think this is an American vs. German issue (except for the cost), but there are plenty of nice dorms at American Universities...perhaps they are better at private universities.

lasthope1993 3 months ago
A dorm that big for just 200, holly crap. Take her bed room, cut it in half and put a bunk bed in there and that's a dorm at UNL and it will be about 400-600 a month. You couldn't find an appartment that's 1 bedroom for less than 600 in this state. I would kill for a 3 bedroom 2 bath for 200 a month. Utilities could be 500 and I would still jump at it. I mean holly fuck that's insane.
