@oweenacow He never uses a Gibson Les Pauls for Californication. The guitar you're refering to is a Gretsch White Falcon 1962. He used a 1952 for the record, but he obviously doesn't want to take the risk that it get's broken.
In the Stadium Arcadium tour Californication wasn't played on every show anymore. Therefore he probably thought it was a waste of space and a risk to take the White Falcoon with him.
@oweenacow Sorry my point is not valid. The only other song where John usually uses a Falcon is Otherside, also played at the same concert. And the Falcon is happily present. So John probably thought his strat sounded better for Californication or something.
Frusciante is a pro! It just goes to show you that they're a real band who have technical problems just like unsigned bands unlike the karaoke pop stars that are stuck in the charts

I love it. 6:39 During the solo Chad progressively gets louder anticipating the end of the solo and then he stops and Flea starts playing the baseline of the chorus but John just keeps playing the solo. Classic.
