Awwww babies, If I wanted to say adopt one of these little guys how far will you drive them? I live in Minnesota. We use to breed Arabian Halter horses but got out of it when I started showing ASB. We had one foal orphaned by her mare so we hand raised her and she grew up to be the nicest horse ever. I would LOVE to rescue one of these little guys to have as a pasture buddy for my show horse, my mare who we hand raised, and maybe be a good trail riding horse as well.
Once they know how to drink from a bucket, we use the free access system. The milk replacer formula we us is very expensive. In the past we have been blessed with some very generous donations without which we could not continue to keep our doors open.
As you might expect, the recent economic downturn has greatly affected us: there is an increased need for our services and a decrease in people's ability to support our program financially. Sometimes it's hard, but it's so worth it.
How can anything so beautiful be called 'a byproduct' or 'a waste product' Shame on the racing industry for contributing so largely to such a disgusting trade.
It took me a while to notice the dog. He kinda blended in. You chose the perfect song for this video. I really hope all these guys find/have found good homes.
It is a shame that such a place as yours is even needed. The racing industry is very irresponsible and only contributes to the unwanted horse population. I am glad that these foals, that would have otherwise died, have a place and a chance at life.
The sad thing is no body is doing anything to stop the racehorse industry and or the horse slaughter industry i have 3 horses myself i have had 10 horses at once in the past years most of them rescues and they are the best horses you will ever own i have a standardbred rescue she 16 hand came to us mean as hell and after 8 yrs of not giving up on her my 5 year old nephew rides her
I bought and raised two of them years ago from North East, Md and they turned out to be beautiful horses. One was a grade mare that did super in english and the other was a reg. appy gelding named He's Naked becausse he was white with only one heart shaped spot on his cheek. Beautiful horse and won showmanship and halter classes. Rode anyway you wanted.
Yes, though anyone can lease a nurse mare if they wanted. The majority of them are for TBs though. Live cover is not allowed in the Jockey Club, so the mares have to travel to be bred, and shipping her TB foal with her is too risky, so they lease a nurse mare.
Sooo precious! And what is happening to them and their moms is sooo wrong! I will sign the petition. The industry that does this should be ashamed of themselves. I hope it will end soon. Horse slaughter needs to be outlawed and very fast. All those poor souls sent to such gruesome deaths. Very cruel world we live in. But you guys are awesome to do this for those babies. Thank you and keep up the good work. I would take a dozen.
I've also heard that the "more valuable" foals mothers are sometimes race horses, etc and to stay with their foal keeps them out of commission longer. So the foal gets the nurse mare and the mom goes back to work...
A nurse mare industry breeds mares so that they can be used a nurse mares to replace mares of what are considered valuable foals, that are sent off to be re-bred. But what happens to the foals that are left behind?
Please add your voice at the petition to stop the nurse mare industry!

please say that you screen would-be adopters who raise these for slaughter?
or just turn them over to slaughter?
canadianskye1964 1 year ago
is this is also going on in the showjumping world,
too, where there can be big money. ?
canadianskye1964 1 year ago
the sport horse industry also uses this practice so their mare can continue to make more money for riders/owners.

Oh!! :( I wish I had a giant ranch, I would adopt them all

When you say that the mothers are sent of to nurse more valuable foals, are we talking thoroughbreds (racehorses) here?

@LastChanceCorral I think you mean that AI is not allowed by the Jockey Club. They demand live cover.

Worst part is the valuable mares are eventually sent for slaughter when they can no longer produce the valuable foals!

WHAT? Those paints ought to be very popular... WHat happened to the "more valuable" foal's mother?

So these foals don't have a dam/mother horse? Who teaches them how to behave, do they have an older equine babysitter?
They're all too cute. Any video of nurse mare foals as adult horses and how do they turn out?
Keytara1 1 year ago
I believe its because the "more valuable" baby's mother has to go and be bred again .. baby can't go along..

I have never fully understood why this is needed. Like, why can't the "more valuable" foal's mother nurse it?
