My brothers BMW got hit by a train, and if you looked on the inside, you couldn't even tell anything was wrong with it. It's amazing how safe a BMW is.
This is NOT Euro Ncap, as it says at the beginning of the video, it is the U.S's Version called Insurance Institue For Highway Safety, Euro Ncap, as the name says, is for EUROPE and for LEFT hand vehicles only, and goes in MPH NOT KPH and has a different marking scheme!
I would hate to be in the car being hit by that thing...
Some of these makers are doing it wrong, they are adding strength WAY forward of where it should be.
The passenger compartment is not being strengthened as much as the forces from the front are being directed to the "floor pan" sooner.
A modern car hitting an older car is very disastrous for the older car. The newer car will often suffer little damage due to a poorly designed crumple zone.
What in the world are you talking about? Are you a vehicle designer or a vehicle safety consultant for a large automobile company? You realize this test is essentially crashing into a wall in which doesn't occur much in the real world? By your reasoning, you want no strength in front of you but only for a hard passenger cage. So you want to go from 60mph to 0 with NOTHING to absorb the energy but you. I'd much rather have the energy redirected to the side mirrors as long as it's not going to me.
If you look at the front structure of these vehicles you will realize that the car is designed to give very little in a crash. Volvo proved that this is the wrong way to go about it.
You have to become progressively more rigid so that the vehicle stops more gently, and that the impacted object ( vehicle/human ) is dealt a less severe load.
A car hit by this behemoth will be in big trouble. Indeed, hitting a tree in this car would also not be as survivable as a Volvo.
@whattheheck1000 I hate to agree with you. If ALL you care about is yourself, then you would certainly prefer being in this car rather than many others. BUT, that really depends on what your hitting... Against a tree, I'll take a softer-fronted car, against another car... give me a tank and we'll use the other guy as a crumple zone!
In this IIHS test 40% of the front of the car strikes a deformable barrier simulating a crash where a car strays across the centre line and hits another car driver's side to driver's side. Its harder to do well in because only approximately 40% of the car's structure is used to absorb the energy-putting that small portion under more stress. Its a better test of the cars structure than a head on test into a wall which doesn't test the structure, only the restraints.
this is so drastically different than that cherry chinese piece of shit. that's why i buy european cars. i wanna walk away alive. rember the "stuff happens" vw commercial? can you imagine if that was a chinese car?
The title is misleading! There is nothing Euro NCAP about this crash test. Using that term simply because they use the same speed doesn't make them the same. It seems like this is the U.S. Highway safety test instead.
ford are safety..i have a focus, well, i had a focus and it is too safe.. it safes my life, that´s all,i had an accident with other car front to front, very serious, the other one dies..it´s all about i can tell about the focus. but bmw it´s bmw..i prefer to a ford hahaha! there are no volvo desigenrs in bmw, there are bmw designers haha
I think this goes to show the importance of having a 5-star car. I was involoved in a motorway crash recently at around 60mph and if we had not been in a 5*car, I dread to think what could have happened to us..
I wa sinvolved in a horrific crash in my Audi S3 on a country lane in England 3 weeks ago. Broke my shoulder but am still alive. I keep telling myself how lucky I was to be in a well built German car than some tinpot car. It saved my life but i really miss my car. Insurance won't pay for it because i didn't have full insurance coverage.
volvo have the bst crash test facility in the world therefor making the safest cars....SAAB use volvo crash center... so if i wanted to live i'd have 1 lol
first of all this isn't a test done by euro ncap... second of all here are many cars safer than this so call bmw for a cheaper price and try and remeber no matter how safe this car is, people just fail to realise these test are done only at 40 mph or 65 kph but who actually travel at those speeds no one, so those test ae useless
There is a difference betwen the speed of traveling and the effektive speed of collision. In most cases the driver brakes down but it's not enough space to make a full stop.
The stress for the car is lower if you hit an other car instead of hitting a block wich is not able to move.
ANCAP an EuroNACP are very hard tests - only 5% of crashes in reality are harder than these test scenarios.

to protect your head from banging i to the b-pillar
boundish91 5 years ago
That might be a bad idea. Probably the head will not touch the B-pillar anyway. See Mercedes E-Class ncap test for example. An exploding side airbag might create head damages itself. Side head damage is much more dangerous than a frontal damage, because blood vessels between brain hemispheres can be ruptured by the lateral shock, and the person might die days later.
Even with airbags, lateral car crashes are the most dangerous.
