Really Nice!! Hey can you get decent 'bedroom' level from or is it marshall/boogie like where you need to really open it up??? They've got one at a local shop that I am coveting.
@ruderocker I had the older version and it needed to be opened up a little bit to sound its best. It was a little muffled down low at bedroom volumes.
Your playing is superb man. I don't really dig too much on 80's hair metal type stuff you play sometimes but I know good playing when I hear it either way and you sound great. I do really like the texas bluesy stuff you play.
I have a HSS Stratocaster, and I'm wanting to switch out the stock humbucker, it's too thin and shrill. I'm thinking the BBQ is what I'm looking for but I figured I'd ask you. Will they still give me all the qualities of a good humbucker without the icepick to the ear?
@fullmetalfunk Hey man, thanks!!!! The BBQ is definitely the right pickup for some situations. It's really hot, thick, and meaty. It shaves off some highs, so it's perfect in brighter guitars. I say give it a shot!
@alpilon23 I wouldn't personally pick the Shiva for those tones, but other people would think it's perfect. It's a dark amp and doesn't have alot of low end "wallop." I'd rather get a Marshall DSL or something like that for the tones you're describing. That's just my opinion, though.
Love the sound and the look of your 58'RI LP. I guess you didn't like the factory pickups from the Custom Shop. I'm thinking about changing mine to those Rio BBQ pickups since hearing them in this video. I have a 62' RI SG VOS and the Custom Shop Pickups just don't cut it. I want a fat, thicker sound in the bridge position, almost like the neck. And I think this Rio Grande BBQ will do the trick for me. By the way, nice Rolex. If it's a Rolex
Hey! This video is kinda old. Since I made it, I've gone through a set of Fralin humbuckers (which were great) and am now back to the stock BurstBucker 1/2 set. They are perfect for my particular Les Paul!
The BBQ pickup will DEFINITELY make your bridge tone super thick and powerful. Sounds like you'd really like it!
PS - I get comments on this watch every-so-often, but it's really just a regular 'ole cheapo watch! :) It does look fancy though.
Alot of guys like the 55hz models, because they are darker. But to be honest, I didn't get to compare the 55hz and 75hz models side-by-side. My gut tells me I'd like the 55hz models better, but I don't know that for sure.
I haven't owned this Shiva in a while, but I'm thinking it had four EL34s?
ABSOLUTELY amazing tone and very tasteful playing. I see you have a PRS mcCarty in another video, and since i'm in the market for my first high quality axe i thought i'd ask you how your les paul compares to your prs in sound, sustain and playability. I'm REALLY torn between a Les Paul and a PRS either McCarty or SC-245 single cut. Thanks...
Comparing PRS and Gibson is a sore spot with alot of folks. LOL! All I know is that in general, PRS and GIbson guitars do not sound the same, feel the same, etc...
It's a personal thing. Me, I prefer Gibsons. This R8 Les Paul will be with me forever. I actually had two McCarty's and they're both gone. Great guitars, though, so don't get me wrong. They just weren't what I wanted to keep.
Thanks for the swift reply. I guess i really need to sit down and make a side by side comparison to see what feels and sounds best for me. I just KNOW i will be getting a Les Paul in cherry sunburst somewhere down the line, but the thing is, PRS is discontinuing the single cut SC-245 model and that sort of makes me want to get one while i can. I've been saving up for a whole year to get my Les Paul, and now it seems like it might have to wait one more, IF the PRS SC-245 convinces me : ) Cheers..
Hey there nice vids of the Shiva! Recently bought a Shiva myself and an Orange 2x12... sounds fuzzy and not at all smooth when in overdrive. Playing through an Ibanez SZ320.. Do you have any idea what could be the problem? The cab? Thinking of getting a proper 4x12.
Hello Sarge: Excellent playing as usual..Hey, Got my Bogner Shiva EL34 and the Egnater Tourmaster 4100. I warmed up to the Bogner immediately. The Egnater is a monster too. So many variations on that one. But something about the Bogner makes me want to play it and not tweek knobs.
Hey thanks man! I'm more influenced by Warren DeMartini (Ratt), Jake E. Lee (Ozzy and Badlands), and Jimmy Page more than anyone. But yeah, I like Cantrell's playing as well!
Hey! You happen to remember the settings? The sound was very smooth and I liked that. Does the presence knob play a big role in getting a good sound with Shiva?
Sorry man, I don't remember the settings at all. The presence and treble does play a big part in the tone of these older Shivas, though (I've never used a new one.)
To be honest, the treble and presence are really hard to dial in. The amp is dark by nature and the treble and presence aren't in the most pleasing frequencies to me. So sometimes the amp would be too dark, then bumping up the highs would make it too harsh and buzzy. Real tricky to dial in, me thinks.
I no longer have a Shiva, but the one I used to have in this video was like a 2002 model or something. It was before the bright switches and new effects loop.
Yeah, I used to have this Rio Grande BBQ pickup in the bridge of my Les Paul. That's a dark pickup. I really liked it for a while, but I wanted something slightly brighter. I now use Lindy Fralin pickups, which are thick, but not too thick.
As far as Bogner's being worth the dough, I'd say yes. I honestly haven't had alot of good luck with Bogners, because they're pretty dark and refined sounding. I like more of a Marshall thing myself. But that's just a personal thing. I know alot of people that absolutely love Bogners and they are no doubt great amps!
I used to say it was Marshall'ish, but now I don't think so. Alot of guys say it's JCM800'ish, but I don't hear that. I think it's much darker and smoother than any Marshall.
Thanks for your response! I have a mesa dual rectifier 3channel right now, and I'm missing that vintage tone. The Mesa is harsh, but does the job when that is what you want! I can't wait to try out some Bogner Products, then there is the cleans.... fender? lol Just gotta buy them all and A/B/C/D/E/F them i guess
THanks for the info on the speakers! I have been using Celestion Neo Century speakers. Really nice man. I recently tried Motor City pickups, Guitar Force and some others. I am back to Rio Grandes. Although I might try some Andersons.
The Marshall cab has the old Celestion G12M 55hz "Blackbacks", which are really just well worn Greenbacks with a slightly bassier resonance.
That Bogner cab came with Vintage 30s, but I've changed them out a few times. I've been using Warehouse Guitar Speakers ET-65s in that cab for quite a while, but just recently put in a Veteran 30 and ET65. Check out the notes I enter for each video. They're usually pretty detailed.
Rio Grande BBQ is so thick and juicy, it is scary! It ends up in most of my guitars. It beats out many of the hand wound custom guys. What do you think sounds bigger, the McCarty or the LP? What pups in the McCarty?
Hey yeah man! It's a super thick meaty pickup that I absolutely love! My favorite out of the pickups I've tried by far. I've always heard an annoying harsh treble thing in most of the guitars I've owned in my life and come to find out, the cause was always the pickups. The BBQ fixes it.
I have a BBQ in the bridge positions of my LP and McCarty. Stock pickups in neck positions.
The LP sounds bigger. The McCarty is slightly darker and still killer, but the LP wins. :)
Yes, but it was quite a few years ago. I replaced a JB in the bridge of a 2001 Les Paul Standard I had with a Custom and I remember liking it ALOT more.
Good stuff! That amp sounds more like a Marshall than the newer Marshalls do. In that clip, do you remember how high you had the gain set on the gain channel?
Thanks! I had the gain right around 2:00 o'clock. Full up is around 5:00 o'clock, so I was close. There's also a boost on the amp that will kick the distortion up quite a bit more, but I didn't use that in this clip.
Thanks man! It's been a while since I had the stock BB2 in the bridge, but I do remember it sounding good. The Rio Grande BBQ is a very thick pickup and some call it "muddy." I can see why they say that, but I like warmer tones coming from the guitar. I can always make up for it at the amp.
The BBQ is what I'd consider medium output with a healthy dose of lows and mids. Slightly shaved highs. Single notes on the unwound strings are much thicker than most other pickups I've owned.
I dont think its just the amp en guitar who makes this great tone , its in his fingers lovin the BBQ btw
