Is it funny how a person can write a classic song like this with few words yet millions of people try and write books everyday and hardly any of these books are remembered. Words are something
Few people may know this but Jim Krueger released a stellar album several years before he passed away. It was never released on CD. Jim's death was such a loss. Great songwriter, guitarist, and singer.
Anyone who has gone through any kind of heart hurt break-up "gets" this song. Such a great tune. This is the type of song that they can't even begin to do now-a-days. By that i mean....these guys wrote it, sung it, played the instruments for it, and perform it together. And they sound every bit as good live as they do on the original "cut" album. Just awesome!!! Find me anyone that does that in todays music. Thanks for "tubing" it Deuce.
GREAT seeing Jim again, if only on You-Tube. Enjoyed his talent many times playing with the Normal Adults at local Green Bay dives like Heroes and Floyds... Sadly missed...
This song is awesome! Jim is my husbands second cousin and really was a great guy. He is deeply missed and will always be remembered by the music that he wrote.
I am also a Manty native...grew up with Kruegs and saw him through the years, including when I lived in Calif. It was so sad he passed away so suddenly in 1993. He had so much talent.
When you hear a song like this done accousitcally and it still freakin rocks....it says sooooo much about the artists as singers, songwriters, & performers. I have always loved this song. Never fails to bring that "what might have been" tear to my eye. Simply awesome.
I also have a live bootleg recording of DFK from a show at the Paladium in New York. Got it from Jim's brother, and it is freakin' amazing! I would dare you find another group of musicians that sang as well as Jim, Mike, Les, and Max Carl. Their harmonies on the live album are astounding! Of course, each was killer musician as well!
On March 29, 1993, Jim Krueger died in a Manitowoc hospital, from complications of pancreatitis, a disease commonly associated with alcoholism. He was 43.
I found out about it almost right away...bumped into the mayor at the time and he'd had a call. It caught me so off guard because me dad was in the hospital dying of lung cancer at the time. I'd konwn Kruegs since 4hth grade.
thanks jim for this sweet gem this song really hits home with alot of people.may you rest in peace.

Jim's CD, "Sweet Salvation" has his version of the song on it, and it's hauntingly beautiful.

Beautiful song. I collect the older Dave Mason shows when Jim was in the band. Jim was a ripping guitar player. He sounds fresh today as he did then.

Jim Krueger also was a member of The Happy Schnapps Combo (possibly the founder?) and wrote The Bears Still Suck Polka (among others).
