A massive Gallagher fan, Bonamassa performed with the well-worn Strat for his three opening numbers, a galvanizing cover of Gallagher's Cradle Rock, the original tune When The Fire Hits The Sea and a blazing take on Gary Moore's Midnight Blues.
Some guitars are famous, and others are legendary. In the case of Rory Gallagher's 1961 Stratocaster, the latter term definitely applies. And so it was a special occasion indeed when blues-rock superstar Joe Bonamassa played Gallagher's prized instrument on stage during his two-night stand at London's Hammersmith Apollo.
Is there any reason to suppose that this is not a custom shop signature model? There is absolutely no reason why J.B. should be handling the real thing..
@infinityjet Why should he be was my point. There is no obvious connection other than,as we now know having checked online, the fact that Joe's girlfriend knows the Gallagher family. The fact that the start of this video is missing is what led me to doubt it.It still seems like a bit of an arranged marriage to me.
Very emotional, just realized that its all in the hands of the player.Although its rorys fameous strat, Joe sound exatctly like himself.Would it not be nice to see David Gilmour play Rorys strat also?
It's Rory's guitar, not one of the replicas. The close ups make that very clear (to those of us Rory obsessives, anyway). The grain pattern, the pickguard- it's Rory's '61 Strat. Aaah. If only it were still Rory playing it! But it's still wonderful to hear this guitar again. @halli335- yep, this one is special. Thanks Donal!
@strumfellow There is a MusicRadar article about how it came about. In Joe's words too - Google the site and look up "Joe Bonamassa on playing Rory Gallagher's 1961 Stratocaster."
I have played Stratocaster for 22 years. I bought my first Les Paul (Edwards) this week mainly because I love the sound Joe has been producing with his LP. He can still make a Strat sing like he did before... But this one is special!
When Gary Moore was a young up an coming guitarist, Gary and Rory wud often play on the same bill and they became very good friends, often neither had spair strings and wud lend each other their guitars, if Gary played 1st and broke a string then Rory wud lend him his guitar and the same wud go if Rory broke a string, then he get Gary's guitar, so a fitting tribute to Gary to play this song on a guitar Gary played many years b4... This guitar has now been in the hands of 3 guitar 'GENIUSES'.....
does anyone know how this came about that joe got a loan of rorys guitar as i cant imagine that it was something he would have hinted at wanting to do.all the same great performance
@socccero Why? He's not Rory... He's Joe. Much respect for Rory, obviously. Its honor enough to just get to play it, I love hearing it getting put through different paces all these years later.
Fabulous just fabulous. Rory would have a grin on his face to hear this and so would Gary. Two of the very best blues musicians in the world. A big thanks to Donal for letting Joe play Rory's Strat. I had the privilege of sharing the stage and some good times with Rory and his band. He is sorely missed.
its bloody great to hear Rorys strat again, and doing a song that Gary Moore played so well,i do believe we have someone who can do them both justice! i hope Gary and Rory could know their music will never be forgotten!
I already loved Joe B's playing and music and lots of things about him. What he has done here is wonderful. Honouring the 2 finest guitar players that came from my home city, my home country, the finest blues men. Massive respect here Joe ! Excellent.
OMG I kill for that strat

Proof indeed that tone is in the fingers. He sounds nothing like Rory but excellent in a completely different way.
FWIW I don't think that is the original guitar, the finish is too glossy. It looks more like one of the recent reproductions.
I caught Joe in Paris last year with BCC. Best current rock act bar none. They should be making millions.

The Drummer look a lot like Bill Baily (!) Is this Rory's Strat-the original had a small split on the upper pickguard near the Neck pickup...
