I think my perspective is different. In the movies and books, to me they're best friends. But I like to take that idea and make it into romance through fanfiction and fanart. I could never actually see them really being lovers.

Yeah, one more point to why the romantic lovers/gay vision is extremely out of place. Sam obviously loves Frodo beyond words to describe and if it was anything gay-ish, why on earth would he go and marry a woman & even say that if he'd marry it would've been her. Any cannon hobbit slash is insultive to how they were meant but especially of course Frodo&Sam. It's so sad so many care only about sex and romance when there is so much more beauty, meaning and depth in LOTR and it's characters. And it's annoying going through Frodo&Sam fanfic summaries. I go "Yay, very interesting/cute idea!" then it ends: "...SLASH!" or "hinted slash" or "a bit slashy". GAWH! WHY can't they let the relationship live up to all it's potential by keeping it pure.
