chinese is a language！it just has many different dialects. just like american english and british english >.< !!!!!!!!

It's true theyre all dialects, but I think the difference is a lot bigger than the difference between any english dialect. I am just a laowai in China, but I have managed to learn Mandarin. When I was in Suzhou the other day, I couldn't recognize a word of that Suzhou hua. In Beijing I can understand them, but that 'errr' ( 儿 ) sound they put behind everything is just too funny. Luckily most Chinese have no problem speaking putonghua, even though with sometimes weird accents.
