I found this trailer fascinating. I find the sequel every bit as good as the first movie, but both are so complex I have had to see them repeatedly. Something about this trailer was just fantastic. I remember seeing parts of it on TV in NY. I do understand people find both movies hard to understand, but I say they were very well done and I don't always need the most obvious.
The problem I had with this sequel is that it feels muddled. The plot is so deliberately over complex that you can only understand it if you keep freezing the film to backtrack over the various plot strands. The emotional core of the film seems lost in all this
@DarkProphet94 nah its good I just got this for easter. Trust me its a justifying sequel it fits nicely in the world of J. Gittes . I don't think it was forced as you think, Jack Nicholson directed it so he seems like he really enjoyed the idea and it also it appears that they didnt make it to top the first one but just continue the story of Jake.
I'm sorry the plot may have been good but it was a sequal that was made to late it should have been made eith er 2 or 3 year's after chinatown or atleast the early 8 to 0's sorry Jack your just to fat dont get me wrong I love Jack my favorite movie is one flew over the cuckoos nest but conpared 2 the 1st it's just a slap in the face to one of the greaties films ever made
@QAndJMovies2 I don't think you should apologize to Jack Nicholson for being to fat. Cuz he doesn't no who the fuck you are and he can probably wipe his ass with hundred dollar bills.
When did Jake start talking so much? We enjoyed Chinatown for his poignant short narratives but it's like the guy can't shut up. Good sequel but more like PAYDAY.
in my opinion one of the greatest private eye series ever, Chinatown had it's own thing and set the stone to Jake Gittes Persona. Before he met Evelyn he was bland and unattractive as a character. The Two Jakes showed how he was fixated on her death, the mental stress and possibly his desire to drink has been increasingly growing. The third should be filmed, and give closure to the series.
I look forward to seeing more Gittes, do you? The Two Jakes is well worth it's individual credit!
@MikeMontana7 The answer to your question is "Yes". One greatest sequels never praised. And not great in the conventional sense like Godfather II, Empire Strikes Back, and T2. Those movies went bigger and better. This one went smaller and more introspective. Not something that bodes well with popular opinion. But, alas, if that wasn't the case, the concept of "Underrated" would not exist.
I saw a trailer for this film that had a great quote from Jack's character on what it's like being a divorce lawyer. "Picture a steak on the table, surrounded by 12 starving convicts with butcher knives. Then the lights go out..... Me? I'm the onion rings".
Hollywood needs more films of the caliber and elegance of Chinatown. Public Enemies looks good, but there's far more GI Joe shit than films like Public Enemies. Change is needed
I doubt the third part will ever be made. It's all up to Robert Towne, who wrote both films and was suppose to direct this one. 2 Jakes ended a lot of friendships in Hollywood and Jack directed it himself because no one else wanted to, and he had committed a lot of his own money to is production. Read "Easy Riders/Raging Bulls" for the full story
One more thing...the actress who plays Dolores...who assists the notory public guy with the braces...What a crush i have on her...so lovely and charming....hope to find her in other films...she just killed me...and barely said a word. andre
SUCH A MARVELOUS FILM. Jack is a wonderful director, and has a personal touch that reminds me of the greats. There's even a sexual connotaion with the car drving through the hills. Great beauty throughout this charmer...and I want you to know, Jack, that I burst into tears when I heard the end title music....ya never know when it's gonna hit you. Andre
@hanniballecter3 There SHOULD'VE been a third, but at this point they should just leave it alone. Jack's too old and the plot of the third installment was simplified and used in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
The sequel...The Two Jakes..it says it on the title 1990. As in the sequel you were taking about as if it hasn't come out yet lol. Anyway, you should see it. Anything Nicholson does is fascinating from a performance perspective, even if the rest of the film tanks or not.

@matthewinnj08 It's OK, Jack is always fun to see in a mystery film. But It's not as good as Chinatown. Still worth a look though

A few months ago I watched Chinatown in my film class, and I can honestly say this doesn't seem like a sequel. Is this one even considered film noir?

@hanniballecter3 If there was going to be it should have been at least a decade ago. At this point Jake would have to be what, in the 70's? Nah.
