I spent the night in Effingham, Illinois in July 1970 while driving cross country with my parents. The then current issue of Railroad Magazine had a color shot of a NYC 2-8-2 on the cover, I had it in the motel room. I knew I'd have to get up before 6:00 to watch the Panama Ltd or City of New Orleans rolling through, hopefully with a slant nosed E-6 on the point knowing it would be the only chance I ever had to see one in real life, they were out of time. I was 16 years old, I woke up at 9:00!
Fabulous vignettes of classic American passenger railroading at its best! Many, those trains just kept on giving. I dig the glimpses of the engineers widening out the throttle, the baggagemen in the doors, the white-coated attendants and porters, and those gorgeous colors. And this in 1970! IC was sure doing something right,'course I suppose they were losing tons of dough by then doing it. Thanks for the look! Kurt.
I dig the 8mm. Very stylized. Ironically... Larger film formats will all be gone, and people will probably still be breaking out 8 for stylized art footage.
Seaboard Coast Line had some of those beautiful slant-nose E6's up until AMTRAK; my book on IC says they kept two on active roster, the 4001 and 4003..gorgeous in the IC Chocolate and Orange!
thank you ! they kept that old E6 #4001 (1:25) running up till amtrack took over. i would see i come through mccomb,ms. sometimes on the city of new orleans. i think i.c. was the only railroad with a operational E6 in the late 60's 70.
nottrying to start afight but the the train at night that you say is the shawnee i think actually is the seminole, because th note says st louis pullman connection, this connection was droppec after the seminole was discontinued south of carbondale il june 1969 then it was renamed the shawnee, great fottage of the city of miami also with a acl & southern railway sleeper
I'm glad you commented on this video. I checked my notes and I shot the Carbondale footage in August of 1970. I remember the power backing down to get on the Shawnee, and the 3-car St Louis connection was at the depot. Both were preparing for a 6am departure. Right after 8am we went to a friend's and ate & took a nap. The Panama got us in C'dale at about 4am. I rode back on the City of NO to Cairo.
The second time I took the COM to C'dale and returned on the Panama. Those trips were a BLAST!
Amazing film footage! Two things stand out: the fleeting image of the long gone MoPac Passenger Depot in Cairo at the start of the film and the scenes of Mounds taken from aboard the train. Would love to see more of your film footage of the MoPac Depot and other scenes from around Cairo---my hometown!
dbmcg2000 where do you get all this marvelous footage? These films are treasures. Not usually a fan of dubbed over music but you really pull it off on all of your videos. Thanks.
What a great trip down memory Lane..Used to ride these beauties from Indy to Du Quoin & back in mid 60's & beyond..Thank you for sharing bc I have been looking for something like this for a while..Please when you can post the others you have & you'll have a friend for life..(Smile)
That was definitely a fun time. I can remember 6 trains each way plus the COM between C'dale and Chicago. It was amazing to see Amtrak put an end to all that traffic.
Wow... what a trip down memory lane. We'll never, ever see scenes like these again.
It's hard to believe that they ran 4 E-units on some of the passenger trains.... that's a good 9,000 hp. Of course, it took a lot of "horsies" to run 100+ mph in central & northern Illinios. I was trackside once when one came by at 100+ mph.... it was more than a thrill... more like "Ohh sh**, I'm too close to this guy!!"
Wow - fantastic view of footage of an era bygone. I sure miss the old brown and orange matched sets of passenger trains on the IC. Thanks for posting this!
E-6s and heavyweight coaches in the 1970's--amazing!

Wow!! Extensive footage of a great fallen flag in action! You even capture some freight diesels with the older green diamond scheme in action!

Are there any depots still standing in Cairo? I've seen a few video postings on Cairo lately; very sad to see what's happened there. Thanks!

That Mounds footage was from the City of Miami that I rode to C'dale from Cairo. I spent a day shooting at the south end of the "Mini-Corridor"

This is all stuff I shot from 1969 to today from the Cairo Ill. area and others. I just decided to put a little taste from the archives out there.
Glad you liked it! Thanks

You bet! This is the stuff from 1970. I have some from 1969 and even in the later years too, while it was still the "good" IC. Glad you enjoyed it.
