Wow! Thank you so much for posting this! Gives me goosebumps every time. And I agree, it is hard to top Johnny Hartman's version, he's at the top of the tops. But Strayhorn does it in my opinion.
@Mufaso1000 The perfect song to listen to while on a date with Veronica Corningstone at a jazz flute lounge eating steak and drinking scotch. Scotchy scotch scotch.
Thank you so much.....it's nice to hear a composer's interpretation of his very beautiful song. And to hear so clearly the intelligent lyrics that were typical of the golden age of music.
SO wonderful to hear this by the composer himself and see how he interprets his own creation. I'm learning this song now and have to say it's just about the most difficult one in my repertoire. But, always wanted to do it! Thank you, joemaranzo for posting this...

After all these years of hearing that song, this is the first time that I was
aware of Billy's own vocal rendition~for which, many thanks.
But out of respect for Billy, you need to correct one line of your printed lyrics. It's
"distinguée traces" and not "distant gay traces" which renders the phrase
quite meaningless, though not perhaps as meaningless as that other
misreading, "distant grey traces". Billy was showing off his knowledge
of the French language with "distinguée" ( at age 16.)
