Best thing to have happened to me in a while... So I was chilling on my hammock outside one day and a parrotlet lands on my belly as im about to fall asleep.... I live in Connecticut
My parrotlet flew away six weeks ago. I hadn't believed in wing clips-I have re-evaluated that position. I didn't take sufficient precautions-a string of improbable but preventable events resulted in his flying out the back door up up and away...
I was just wondering..we just found a parrotlet in our garage a couple weeks ago and we have no idea how old he is and the vet didn't know either..how do we find out?
I'm honestly not sure either... the only reason I know is because I got my birds from a breeder who actually hatched them from eggs. Does the bird have a band on it's leg? There might be some sort of DOB info on that.
Hey i was just wondering, I thought you had to clip birds feather so they don't fly around and wouldn't it be messy if they can fly all over the place and poop? lol
Hi- it's kind of mixed between bird owners what the best way is. I prefer my birds un-clipped because they get so much enjoyment out of flying. Some people believe you'll end up with a lot of behavioral problems if you clip a birds wings. It's also a misnomer that a clipped bird is a safe bird.
I agree, our bird is flighted and loves it! We haven't had any problems, and as for the poo.. well.. it's poo. It's not like a german shepard or anything. Besides with a dog, you have to scoop it out of the yard. :P
A clipped bird is still capable of "flying" if you brought it outside and it caught a good wind current. Also clipped birds can injure their chest bones if they try to fly and then land hard on the ground.
My birds are unclipped and they do occassionally poop when they're outside of their cage but they are such small birds that it's not a big deal. Their poops are like the size of a tic tac. Larger birds however would have gigantic ones so it'd be a bit messier. When you have un-clipped birds it's more work because you have to be very cautious about where they're flying (fans, windows, doors open...). It also helps if you birds are very hand tame and step up on command.
@choochooxp most parrots don't do much pooping while they fly.... mine actually prefer to poo in the same spot as much as they can.... even flighted birds, most of the time anyway, don't fly non stop like you may think they would

Wonderful parrotlets. I was given a blue variant in October, and he is my joy.
BTW, the image quality is spectacular. May I ask what kind of video camera you used?
