I bought this album after i heard the spectre within. In fact I had it in album, cassette, and cd. all three different covers. I thought at the time that i was the only fates warning fan. Glad to see i was not.
what people have to understand is that fates warning was a PROGRESSIVE metal band. night on brocken was heavily influenced by bands like maiden and priest so there for it had a more raw metal sound. the rest of their stuff was more progressive. its all really good to me but personally i like night on brocken and no exit the best. i love this song, it gives me chills every time i hear it. long live fates warning!
Brocken is fantastic, but I have to disagree that the next albums were let-downs. The Spectre Within was awesome, and Awaken the Guardian dove straight off the deep end into a league of its own. One of the great things about Fates Warning is that they never rest on their laurels but continuously evolve their sound and push their musicianship, even today.
New album out next year, I think. Long live the Fates!
maybe to you... but the real metal head knows that when night on broken came out it was the shit. the next two albums while still good weren't as aggresive or heavy. that's why for me just a few albums top Night On Broken, and certainly awaken the warding wasnt one on them.
Real metalhead fucks guys like you, and listen to music. Music is the primal thing, not knowledge. Of course, someone who don't know which album is first or what is the first lineup is just stupid, but calling him "not metalhead" or calling yourself "real metalhead" isn't so great too.
Can't wait to listen to this live by Jon in Athens!!!

I'm sure most will not disagree if I say that ''The Spectre Within'' had a much better musicianship and production than this.

@calastiur Sure it does. Who cares? This rocks.
Lengsel7 1 year ago
@calastiur it was there first album thats why cause after you start recording and write a full album your writing and musicanability grows

@motleycrue24
Yeah, it usually does. Then again, there are bands that always knew how to play well with eachother since the beginning. Take Atheist for example.

Heavier doesn't mean better, obviously. To me, ''The Spectre Within'' is a pure masterpiece.
''Awaken the Guardian'' isn't too bad either, but hard to get into, in my opinion. Some songs are really forgetable on that album.

well didnt iron maiden and FW have close ties?
TKDintraining 2 years ago
Not really. Fates Warning has ties with Dream Theater, but not Iron Maiden.
tankermottind 2 years ago
@tankermottind Fates Warning was thought of as an Iron Maiden clone for their first two albums.

@ub3r2008 its understandable but personally when i listen to early fates warning it does not remind me of iron maiden at all

Awesome! Haven't heard this in ages.
John sounds A LOT like Samson-era Bruce Dickinson here.

Very heavy. 80s Metal Blade roster was very brutal & intense. Same with the Combat label.

@removetube I actually enjoy No Exit with Ray Alder but the first three albums with John Arch are godly.
