The person who wrote this book was a communist Jew. Surprise, surprise, when world war 2 broke out he withdrew the book because he feared it would convince Americans not to support the war against Germany. Some people even wrote him about being opposed American involvement and he responded by giving them up to the FBI. The writer is just against some wars, when they don't benefit him.
I first saw parts of the movie in Metallica's One music video, but then I watched the movie. Great stuff. Even though I'm not antiwar or a pacifist or anything, it was still really good.

I said "he can't speak" because I thought that people without mouth are able to speak, so he had to lose his tongue too (I meant lips), wich is nonsense, but if you are such an expert , you can tell me how he lost his sense organs .
@TheIceBreaker90 actually he has a tracheotomy(a tube going right into his trachea, but below his vocal cords) so he can't get air to them, because air takes the path of least resistance. so if he tried to talk the air just goes right back out the tube instead of up his trachea through his voc cords. if you plugged his tube he MIGHT be able to vocalize, unless his trachea was crushed(which it probably was because that's probably why they did the tracheotomy in the first place). make sense?

This is the single most fucking devastating book, ever. No book has made me cry like a little bitch as much as this did. It never takes the easy way out. The day I got it, I couldn't put it down and I finished it in a matter of just a few hours. The movie looks just as good, and the mask over Joe's face makes it just that more terrifying. The song by Metallica makes the story even more devastating. Anyone who is in favor of war NEEDS to read this book.

I am seventy now and have not seen the movie, but I have read the book. I don't remember the year but I was young then so late forties early fifties. This was a book about a soldier in the great war that was hit by a grenade. I say Great War because the first world war did not come about until after the second world war had started. This poor guy lost sight, hearing, arms and legs from the explosion. The book is his thoughts and struggles til someone understood his head tapping in Morse Code.

the most terrifying , mind blowing, depressing, dark, true, direct, at some parts unbearable, unimaginable, deep and extremely hard to watch, film I have ever known and I would even say, that ever existed. Just to put it on the level of human-to-human mind understanding, it just simply not fit in ''everyday'' understanding for most humans. Every thinking human being will realize how unbearable the state of mind and physical condition this is where one exists as a conscious ''peace of meat''.
Hardly that. Hardly the most difficult book to read either. I study the dark side of the human mind in order to try to come to grips with the insanity of our culture. A Clockwork Orange is one of my favorite films. Very difficult to watch. I can't watch it more than about once a year. Yet I couldn't get more than about twenty pages into Anthony Burgess' novel. I invite you to do better.
Taxi Driver is the same for me. I can't watch the bloody scenes at all.
And for difficult-to-read books made into difficult-to watch films, with genius oozing from every pore of each instance, Hubert Selby Jr.: Last Exit to Brooklyn and Requiem for a Dream.
Both books, and both movies, will change the way you view life, the world, fiction, and film. Promise. Not to be missed by any serious student of serious art, or life. As though there's a difference between the two.
This film and story is so disturbing to think about. I read the book a few years ago and I still think about it to this day, its one of those that stays with you.
Imagine how you would deal with being trapped inside your mind, in pure darkness, unable to do anything but think. You cant imagine the mental torment, its a hell of a scary concept. I'd say as close to hell as one could get.
im thinking if that happend to someone now, they could be able to put some prostetics on him and restructure his face, i mean it sucks that at that time they didnt have stuff like that. that could of helped him. oh and i read that the author wrote this about someone that this really happend to. i mean that just messed up.

I remember the book being required reading in my high school. It was the scariest book I have ever read. I remember my English teacher having a poster that promoted the movie.

the most terrifying , mind blowing, depressing, dark, true, direct, at some parts unbearable, unimaginable, deep and extremely hard to watch, film I have ever known and I would even say, that ever existed. Just to put it on the level of human-to-human mind understanding, it just simply not fit in ''everyday'' understanding for most humans. Every thinking human being will realize how unbearable the state of mind and physical condition this is where one exists as a conscious ''peace of meat''.

Hardly that. Hardly the most difficult book to read either. I study the dark side of the human mind in order to try to come to grips with the insanity of our culture. A Clockwork Orange is one of my favorite films. Very difficult to watch. I can't watch it more than about once a year. Yet I couldn't get more than about twenty pages into Anthony Burgess' novel. I invite you to do better.
Taxi Driver is the same for me. I can't watch the bloody scenes at all.

And for difficult-to-read books made into difficult-to watch films, with genius oozing from every pore of each instance, Hubert Selby Jr.: Last Exit to Brooklyn and Requiem for a Dream.
Both books, and both movies, will change the way you view life, the world, fiction, and film. Promise. Not to be missed by any serious student of serious art, or life. As though there's a difference between the two.

This film and story is so disturbing to think about. I read the book a few years ago and I still think about it to this day, its one of those that stays with you.
Imagine how you would deal with being trapped inside your mind, in pure darkness, unable to do anything but think. You cant imagine the mental torment, its a hell of a scary concept. I'd say as close to hell as one could get.

im thinking if that happend to someone now, they could be able to put some prostetics on him and restructure his face, i mean it sucks that at that time they didnt have stuff like that. that could of helped him. oh and i read that the author wrote this about someone that this really happend to. i mean that just messed up.
