My black USB stick things are still there and intact, i can see the four pins on the bottom of them and none and touching the metal, they are fine. The power brick is red and i did all of the official Xbox advice things and they didnt work (suprise, suprise). Give it to me straight......is it truley doomed?

@Sireskimowolf ok I have bad news for you. I am no xbox hardware expert by any means but you probably shorted the motherboard some how (most likely because the pin broke or you were to rough on it somehow). Hence the red rings of death.

@ClassicallyReviewed well my xbox is really old and maybe it was just a coincidence that it happened at that time so im going to open it up and go through the thing with the thermal compound red ring of death fix and see if it works. if it doesn't than you are probably right which would suck.

HAha that totally worked... Sort of. What happened was my rechargeable controller is broken and has been kind of shorting out and stiff. So, After seeing this vid I unplugged it and the xbox turned on all my itself. Pretty creepy but I can play games again.

Turns out my USB ports were just dusy! Blew in them and my Xbox simply turns on. Although I still have to thank you seeing as I would never have dreamed of checking the ports as a result of power problems :D

Thanks for this. My friend dropped off 3 XBoxes that weren't working to see if I could fix them and I had never come across this issue and after watching this I took a small screwdriver and pulled the prongs up and sure as hell it turned back on.

@bigmanne1 Its the 4 gold pins right in the usb port if you cant see the pins then the black plastic piece must not be missing. Make sure to check all the usb ports including the ones on the back

@i8abear I dont think its an easy replacement where you can just buy the piece and pop it in you may be able to replace the whole usb port if you take apart the xbox360 and know how to sodder.

@sodstalker if your willing to open up the xbox look around the motherboard and see if anything alarms you (like something that looks worn or melted) if there isnt anything then im not sure get a new one i guess. I wanna move into having broken 360s shipped to me so i can fix them and get paid. what do you think about that idea? haha

@Videocreatorgod if there is a light on the power brick then you or the damage probably shorted something in the 360 which basically means get a new 360. If there is no light on the powerbrick try a different powerbrick.

@SnipingRaZor hmmm could be something on the connection between the motherboard of the xbox and where the power brick connects into. Or something could be wrong with the motherboard preventing it to start. Like a bad ignition in a car. My suggestion either take it to a third party repair place or get a new one. Sorry couldnt help you much

I was just about to pay the $99 for xbox repair (out of warranty)... saw this, when I took a look at the USB slot, I noticed something odd. The spring that keeps the cover on the slots closed had popped off and was stuck in the slot, causing the short... Thanks

My 360 got the RROD after a power surge, even though it wasn't turned on, just plugged in. But the problem is when I push the power button the console doesn't "start up", it just shows the RROD and the power brick light stays orange, so I can't even do the towel trick to it or anything.

Any idea what that's about? I used two different power bricks and there was no difference.

@mcdonkey500 well since you used two different power bricks I would say it is probably something inside the 360. Something inside of it probably blew when the powersurge hit. Sorry I don't have any ideas besides to get a new one. That same kind of deal happened to a computer of mine. Next time plug it into a surge protector outlet.
