  • @ghostvenom051 I'd like to see u play that good when u were 11.

  • not really impressive, but interesting :/

  • i thought i was good , wow ur so good

  • omg i have the same set lol good job kid

  • that was good but i hate the bell so much that it makes me want to drive into the maternity ward of the nearest hospital

  • DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN

  • @tenniscrazy2 That's great! You are welcome!

  • @oldchops, agh I looked for the music but I seem to have lost it. It comes in book form at any music establishment that sells books.. I just can't seem to find the music that I one bought.

It's good that he made snare his freshman year! I made bass my freshman year, and then snare my sophmore year, and I had a blast! Best of Luck.

  • God, I'd love to see him play Yellow After the Rain by Mitchell Peters, it's a great beginner 4 mallet solo! It was the first one I learned when I was first getting used to 4 mallets.

Love the videos, and I hope he stays with music, it's a great thing!

  • @tonymontana1229 Share the music and he'll learn it and play it (and post a video). This is a good time to do it because in about three weeks he will be preparing for his first year/fall marching season, in high school marching band- playing snare drum.

  • @oldchops I know a website which has the sheet music for Yellow After the Rain free. If you're still looking for it, send me a message and I can give you the name of the website.

  • @tenniscrazy2 Thanks! I sent you a pm.

  • Protestant percussionist. he will god far in the percussion world no doubt about.

  • this kid is amazing for his age (and size)

but there was no one in 9th grade (or under) better than him? that's kinda sad, even tho this kid is amazing.

  • His rolls are amazing.

  • yyyaaaaaaaaaaaa i have those pearl bells!!!!!!

  • WTF. What can't this kid do!? He's like a beast and still a kid:)

  • Freaking Awsome! The bells hurt my ears over the computer too.

  • i know wat you mean man it is hard to play four mallets i have a ensomble and im playing six mallets its fuking crazy seriously its insane keep kicking ass man your amazing i love your tornado snare drum solo im playing it this year for solo and ensomble ha ha just keep it up dude you have a future in music

  • Oh my gosh, i hate when im put on bells, they are so loud! I agree with @tweetEBird , it isn't the easiet instrument but neither is anything else. We (mallets) usually get bashed because we so called play the easiest instrument. UH NOOO! Who ever thinks it is, needs to learn how to play four mallets and expierence the pain. T.T vibraphone ftw!!!!!!

  • lol i don't think its the fact their so loud. I think its more coz of the FREAKIN HIGH PITCH BRAIN PIERCING ring when your playin it lol

  • i frekin suck at bells lol

  • that kid is insane

  • u no u r not soupossed to do to much reboud [u just did] it is not good for ur malletts

  • i have that same bell set

  • but can he sight read music? or can he even read it?

im thinking he just completely memorized that, you need to be able to read music too. you can't always have someone show you

  • Let's see...he actually was first-chair in the All-West TN Junior High Honor Band (9th grade and below) back then, as a 6th grader. He has since earned a spot in that band the following year, and should earn a spot this year, and is one of the top players in the Memphis Youth Symphony; all requiring sight-reading proficiency on mallet/keys, timp, and snare. Yes, he can read.....extremely well!

  • Not to sound rude or anything but, the way you said that, to me, feels like your being a bit cocky. Not to say you are, but thats how I am reading it. If I am infact reading it wrong please tell me.

  • @oldchops Wait, he's in Tennessee? If you don't mind me asking, when he goes into high school, which is most likely this school year, correct? Will he be marching in the drumline for whatever school he goes to?

  • its malets...come on...i mean this is awesome but. mallets is one of the easiest instruments. This kid is amazing though holy cow.

  • it is not really that easy...people just assume it is because we just have to "hit the instrument". to play mallets is one thing, to play mallets musically and with great technique is another thing.

  • yea seriously i play them this is my first year

  • @kscudder16 and u need to learn to read music and hes learned it off by hart

  • @kscudder16 i completly agree. percussionists get so much beef because everyone thinks its so "easy". like were lazy or something.

  • @himrasmus101 exuse me? mallets one of the easiest instruments? oh i dont think so. can you even play mallets? hmm?

  • One word to sum that all up : magically. Does anyone see "DCI" written all over him? :)

  • @alexsmmb i see a future in the cavaliers or blue devils drum line

  • its so unfair! you demolish every song and solo you play on any percussion instrument. :'( im jealous.

  • Dude, you have much better developed rolls in this video than people in my highschool class.

  • one word......FLAWLESS

  • Dang.. beautiful rolls.

  • I am a percussionist too and the only girl in 7th and 8th grade anyways I'm struggeling on the bells and wanted to see what other peope sounded like.Well now I no what a PROFESSINAL sounds like!!! Very good keep it up it'll get you far.

  • I understand having trouble with bells. Just keep at it. Practice reading music and where the notes are on the bells. Then the rest will just start to follow. Keep it and practice :)

  • Love the rolls.

  • great job!! for being so young you are a great percussionist. I hope you take full advantage of the opportunities that have been given to you, if i had a dad that paid for all my musical needs i would be very VERY VERY thankful. You'll be amazing when you're older.

  • Oh my goodness! Jay! You have some wicked talent! That sounds absolutely beautiful! How in the world did you memorized all that???

  • i play that and its as hard as hell

  • i like your rolls

  • dang! dude that is clean! better than me

  • u good but i like snare better

  • hate the bells to ringy

  • hence the reason they're called bells

  • lol...moron..

  • I play Mallet Precussion in Instrumental Music class but my mallets suck :P But your really good

  • this shows how percussion can really serve as a solid base for young musicians. by the time you are good with percussion, you can learn any other instrument and all you need to pick up are the fingerings to notes and breathing/tonging technique. this kid is sooo going to shred when it comes to middle/high school band.

  • This is pretty good if we're talking about speed but... YOU NEED TO GET A DRUMSET! you could seriously make it big with it ..

  • YOU ARE ROLLING ON BELLS!? THAT A NUMBER 1 RULE IN PERCUSSION!! DONT ROLL ON BELLS!!! and im wondering...question to DAD of jay... Did your kid want to play drums/percussion? or did you push him?

  • does it really matter if they pushed him to do it?

  • no it doesnt but its just sad to see that i mean would u want someone to do that to you?

  • well, my parents forced me to play saxophone in band in 6th grade, and now I love playing it. I'm glad they forced me!

  • ok im happy for you that you have found a passion

  • Shut the hell up, and get over yourself.

  • get over myself? when did i ever state that i was self absorbed? well, im not! i think u r the one with probs

  • Big deal, it sounds wonderful. Besides, what if the notes hes playing on the rolls are thirty second notes, theres no other way to play those in that time.

  • He's a hero

  • Is this real?

  • jay is a awsome drummer and percussionist i play drums and could never play pitched percussion keep it up and if possible could you play the ditty i love that

  • a true drummer can play it all

  • i one of those sets they suck to play on its so little

  • Ohmagad. I wish I could be this amazing. Talk about a prodigy! :o

  • Very good lively and accurate AND entertaining. Would like to see you play a Musser vibe or even a xylomarimba or marimba.

    Great stuff.

  • WOW

  • yepp he really has something special

seriously just an all around great musician better then most at the highschool/college level

    has the whole package

    congragulations :)

  • hes an amazing player but i wonder if his dad pushes him to practice as much as he does jw no ofense it just seems his dad is a big promoter of jay

  • crud.... i hope he wont be in a marching around mine! i am in west tn too...

  • holy crap imim 6th grade and i cant play that good

  • thats kinda the point...most highschoolers cant play that good

  • wow....bells,marimbas,guitars,sax's,piano,snare drums,tenors.......i wish i had all that stuff

  • This kid is amazing. I am a percussionist as well. I play snare in Marching band and 4 mallet marimba in symphonic. And i know a little trombone lol. But this kid is 3x the percussionist I am.

  • wow...im jealous even tho it wasnt anything spectacular and sounds made up lol

  • i am impressed... i really like how this guy is a percussionist and not a drummer... he doesnt limit himself to snare... BRAVO!!!

  • thats pimp dude i am in 7th grade and i cant do that

  • He said he CAN'T do that.

  • that made me laugh

  • just so you know that was a complement

  • Oh, I know :P

  • saxaphone as well

  • w00t thats crazy! Good job!

  • dang

  • Hey Jay your good dude... and guess what I take Percussion to!

  • is that like college honor band, good god ur amazing

  • wow i couldn't play like that when i was in 6th grade

  • wow i can't play like that when i was....now!

  • Siick! I wish I could play like that when I was in 6th grade.. I still would never be able to play bells with mallet heads that big though haha.

  • your mallet skills are coming along very nicely

  • mbennet14 i totally agree with you!

This kid is blessed. I thought I was, but looking at all he is capable of....it just amazing. Keep it up Jay

  • can you do 4-mallet stuff yet?

  • He just started working on 4-mallet playing about a month or so ago. Right now, he is just getting familiar with the various grips. Besides dabbling with the piano, percussion keyboard has always been his favorite percussion instrument to play/learn. That is even more the case now since he started learning 4-mallet playing.

  • Learning this fast he should probably be playing 6-mallet soon, haha. So what does Jay say he wants to be in his future highschool, Front Assemble, or drumline, I bet he is looking forward to it.

  • at this rate... he will probably have a solo on every instrument in the drumline as well as a couple mallet feature all in one show!!! haha

  • He definitely has a case of something... Like a serious case of the practices... Keep practicing and everything that's a little off at this age will be worked up and out by the time high school rolls around...

  • bravo! that was awesome! keep up the good work jay!

  • I think God has blessed Jay with an amazing gift! He is a GREAT young percussionist, and I can imagine him having a lot of success as he gets older! Awesome Job, Jay!

  • The problem that I continuously see you forging on him is the ability to memorize than to sightread or create. Im not saying its bad to learn proper technique and licks at a young age to better prepare and incorporate into the future, but seriously, post something of him completely sight reading for the very first time.

Back off a little on the private lessons because teaching him to always improvise is a very bad habit to learn and adapt to. Let him be creative and possess talent of his own.

  • omg!i love this dude...he can play anything...i have been in my marching band for about 2 years...i am marching tenors this year i suck at the bells

  • that was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Does he have savant syndrome? =o

  • Nope.

    He has Godly Percussionist Syndrome.

  • dude youre awesome i'm about your age(i think) and iv'e been playing about 3 years and i stink at the bells

  • ok hopefully this kid didnt choose to play this instrument.

  • why he is really good at it and it is a really cool instument and fun to play

  • He is amazing. I do percussion. I'm his age and he is twice as good as me. So much talent. Keep it up!

  • you could bo marimba, vibraphone, snare,or tenors in a drumline!

  • he is WAY better than me!!! i started playing this year.

  • He's far better than many of my high schools percussionists.

  • wow this is amazing hes really good!

  • Wow, that's pretty surprising! It's cool that he has such a wide variety of instruments that he plays, that makes him an even better musician. And I guess if he played percussion, it would be pretty boring since he already knows whatever the directors are teaching them. Can you post a video of him playing alto sax?

  • We will try to post a saxophone vid this weekend. He is a beginner, though progressing very well, so do not expect his saxophone playing skills to be at the level of his general percussion skills.

  • saxophone? wow

    whats next trumpet?

    lol

    is he good playing timpani?

i wouldn't mind seeing him playing a timpani solo

    :P

  • Well, since you asked, he does own a cheap guitar that he enjoys strumming on. No, he is not taking lessons or anything, the guitar was just something he wanted as a gift. As for timpani skills, I would say he is good enough- given his very limited and seasonal practice time and the availability of the instrument. Generally speaking, only professional timpanist and organizations/schools own timpani drums. He played a timpani solo (including tuning) as part of his honor band audition.

  • WOW...that's all I can say...no other word...You say he is in 6th grade? That means he is in band? Does he totally power over all of the percussionists in the band? :)

  • Actually, he plays alto sax his middle school band (6th grade band). But, he auditioned on percussion for the region's junior high honor band and earned first chair in the first group.

  • He could be in BLAST!also,he should check out this music writing software called Sibelius 5!its coll, also educational!

  • oh oh oh ive played the second song! its fun!!! =] i dont think im as good as he is though!

  • HE ROCKS!

  • wow, jay knows so much regarding percussion. i wish my parents were like you guys so i can be a prodigy too... :(

    great job.

  • Holy! he is soooooo talented!

  • once again... another great vid!!

  • OK, let's hear it for Dad this time!!! DAD!!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!

  • better than me and im a freshman!!

  • That is a hard song to my view, and you nailed it extremly well!

  • Wait you meanJay highschool the one in Jay,Flordia

  • jay is his name u idiot

  • What's the name of the sheet music

  • Most of it is just audition music. It may still be posted on the All West TN Honor Band website.

  • It doesn't have a name. It is junior high honor band tryout music that Arlington Middle Schools Band director composes. The last time I checked the music was not on the West Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association.... But you could proably message the creator of this video to scan and send you a copy of the music.

  • dude wow.. ur a percussionist.. like u know ur stuff i thought it was just snare.. but then i saw a tenor vid and now this.. pretty sic man.. well also u got a good teachers i'm guessing.. (dad) so yea keep it up man ;)

  • OMGSH I KNOW YOU!!

we wer in all west together this year.. blue band

    you're awesome

  • he is a music kid

  • you made it didnt you? blue band? could have swore i saw you there

  • Yes, blue band (junior high honor band), first chair.

  • oh. I was third chair red band trombone

  • you're truly amazing i thought i was pretty good on the snare but your just the best kid ive ever seen play an instrunment!!!!!!!!!!!

  • now lets see this kid play a 4-mallet solo, that'd be awesome!

  • WOW what piece is this and beautiful rolls.

I have a bell kit just like that but it has the notes engraved on it haha

  • fantastik

  • I was by a couple weeks ago but just had to say that the fact that he plays this with larger mallets on that small bell kit is amazing.. hard to do. Now about that one note... ;-) right on, right on!

    ~

  • dude amazing

  • Gread Job! I been playing for 2 years and you are much better than me. Im in 7th grade and my name is Kara.

    ~Kara

  • haha i have that bell kit! don't use it anymore.

man, there are so many kid percussionists on youtube that are "talented", but this kid isn't a fraud, he pwns.

  • Why the hell would this kid even need to audition for a Middle or High School Band?

  • WOW URE GOOD!!!!!!!!!!

  • he sure know how to play that

  • as others have said, one or two bad notes there, but I think it has to do that you are playing with insuitable mallets for the small bars of bells, and I think you will be fine once you switch to the marimba or xylophone at all region. best of luck! keep me posted on how you do!

  • First Chair, Top/First/Blue Junior High Honor Band. Yes, the first piece was the actual audition music which was intended for and played on xylophone (he does not own one). And yes, he used larger xylo mallets instead of the smaller bells mallets in this video.

  • wait the first one was for a middle school band? sounded more like my Districts band audition piece and im in high school,

  • awesome work jay... i envy u, you are a better percussionist than me, all im awesome at is mostly snare bass and tenors.

  • bravo!

  • man, you seriously need to tell more people about this, I saw all of his other videos, this kid is crazy

    like no joke

    DCI at 14 im predicting

  • on the last song u were playing 1 wrong note all the time and should know couse i do ing that song as an all valley piece

nut u still did good by the way

  • give him a break he is in the sixth grade and I am sure he is much better than you.................. Oh yeah and learn how t spell

  • awesome

  • Hey jay do u read music or play by ear? Either way DAMN! nice work

  • Jay is very skilled at reading music. He also has a good ear like most young kids.

  • real men wear pink Jay, just remember that. Keep it up

  • i taught him that...

  • This kid is an amazing musician!

  • I was listening and thinking on where I've this specific melody haha. To recall, its the audition music for All-West! Good job!

  • HAHHAHAHA this kid ROX!!!!! hes better than most of my bands percussionist =X they are easily the weakest part of our group though.

    KEEP ROCKIN BRO!

  • isnt he the only 6th grader that made it?

    or am i mistaking

  • I dig the smile! Keep loving what you do!!

  • Jay, you never cease to amaze me!
