Speaking of true progressive and not being into dark metal or anything I was only impressed in recent years by Devil Doll, specially the SACRILEGE OF FATAL ARMS.Not that it has anything to do with the epic grand colours of Genesis poetry and sound but the complexity of their music is quite amazing and the intensity of Mr.Doctor's lyrics and intrincated vocals do relate with the unstoppable energy and creativity of Gabriel.Well, perhaps I can't think of others but VDGG Hamill or Family's Chapman.
@tubellarbells yeah i am also impressed by devil doll's album. the fisrt one i heard was "the girl who was dead". mr doctor is a total freak but that is what makes him such an innovator
love those shots of phil collins behind the drumset...that was him in his prime and its cool to see it from that view. I really wish i could see this whole interview without the annoying guy speaking over them. I think they had this interview on the 70-75 boxset but I couldn't believe they left in the voice over, so it still isn't any fun to watch. Also, anyone know why they used two microphones taped together for Peter Gabriel's microphone?
@TheCorrectAnswer56 the two microphones for left and right side ;) At this time it was the technique to have two different canals. Sorry for bad english. Not my language ;)
@TheCorrectAnswer56 i dunno, maybe he had one with effects and one clean? He has had some flanger effect and such on certain shows... but really, i dunno.
Gerhinstrudel - simple answer - sadly, no This video is amazing. What is the point of Genesis without their frontman and what is the point of their frontman without Genesis? I saw Genesis 76 and Gabriel 77 - both first tours without each other - depressing affairs. Gabriel was the best show but it's irrelevant. He's a brilliant soul singer - if he was black he'd be up there with Otis and Sam. Collins is a fantastic drummer. Nobody to this day has done a drum fill as fast as Get em out by Friday.
Peter seems to have grabbed the wrong mask for this performance. Usually it is the old man's mask that he wears for The Musical Box. The red dress and fox's mask is for Supper's Ready.
actually, this is when peter gabriel started taking effect to costumes and stuff. theres a vhs about genesis and everything that happend in the band and it shows peter in the foxs mask and the red dress and the whole audience was shocked haha, its quite funny really. and im pretty sure this is the part on the vhs where it shows peter in the mask and everything, im most positive about all of this.
actually im wrong hahah because in 1972 at shepperton, peter gabriel had the old man mask during this song, but i was just refering to the vhs i have about the foxs mask. and ive never seen the foxs mask used to suppers ready =\
The music is from The Musical Box - a true Genesis classic. Peter Gabriel was pure PERFECTION fronting Genesis. Phil Collins made two fairly okay attempts with Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering, but Genesis never recovered from losing Gabriel's charismatic presence.
I dont know why you dont like Phil Collins, he hasnt done a thing wrong, its not like Gabriel was kicked out the band and replaced. Gabriel left the band on his own accord. Collins who was also singing (although backing) filled in, and turned out to be fantastic, and still is. They both and still are equally as good as eachother.
I don't really like the way how Peter Gabriel performed the songs (The weird costumes and masks). But also if the performances were weird, it is good music and the songs of the peter gabriel era are of same quality as the songs when Phil Collins became the lead singer. Well, but I prefer the voice of Phil :-)

Take Gabriel out of the picture and you've got a good jammin' video. PG looks like a fool. The rest of the band were still learning how to play their instruments (in '73) but that hard energy does sound good.
What are you talking about?? Genesis had been playing for at least 5 years before 1973, so how could they be "still learning how to play their instruments"?
As for the costume, that was always part of Peter's unique stage presence. I was privileged to see Genesis with Peter Gabriel fronting the band at Milton Keynes, summer of '82, for the one-off Womad concert. He was carried on stage in a coffin, and emerged as his Rael persona. It was like a religious experience. F***ing AWESUM!!
In fact....wasn't this concert before "Selling England by the Pound" was released? (The clips of this I've seen on YouTube don't feature any Selling England material...)
I don't think the old man mask was introduced yet. Wasn't that later in the tour? I don't remember. (I don't recall, I don't remember anything at all...lawl)
Classic Genesis - thank you - I never got to see them with Gabriel. I was really down that he left. Lyrics and music shaped my teens. Incredible musicians. Hope Peter has the heart to perform and tour with them again.
Amazing footage. Thanks so much for posting. Great to see Phil behind the kit. Seeing Gabriel in the fox head again is unreal. Incredible musicians and songcrafters.
at 2:17 you can see Mike Rutherford seeing Peter walking out with a "what the hell..." look

Has anyone else ever wondered if the guys from Genesis would be successful today if they were still young and starting out? What do you think?
Gehirnstrudel 3 years ago
They could fit in with Spock;s Beard and the Flower Kings
JIF882 3 years ago
Interesting question. Musically speaking, they were a brilliant band. I think they would be successful in any era.

Actually, the Shepperton show was from '73. @ that show he did wear old man mask, but this was before that. It was the 1st time Pete wore a costume

These guys were just too calm for Peter.
He needed much more unpredictable musicians to back him up.
And yes,I am one of those who think Genesis is synonym for Peter Gabriel.
