@catwomanjellicle Actually it was suppose to be called "Law & Order: Sex Crimes" when it began but it was changed to "Special Victims Unit" because it was more appropriate I think.

Dick Wolf was so emotionally effected by S1 ep 7 that he penned another crime drama entitled "Sex Crimes" It wasn't til later that they decided to make it a spin off of the original L&O and call it SVU because that's what the actual squad is called and it's a lot less dicey to use as a title than Sex Crimes.
