  • cool!

  • Finally! Someone who gets that rock and metal can be transposed into different forms ( i.e. the chapman) kudos for being original and not playing that new age, coma inducing, elevator music.

  • That is not they way to play a chapman stick.... In that case just play guitar dude,

  • @charuan12 He paid for the Stick, he can play it however he wants, so long as it's actually music. If you don't like it, you could get one yourself and play it "properly".

  • I had a Stick lesson from Nick many years ago. Nick is a great instructor, a terrific player who is absolutely dedicated and passionate about this instrument.

Nick 'gets' the Stick. I prefer his music to the horrible New Age noodling that most of the professional Stick players seem to be into.

  • ten thumbs up ;)

  • THE amazing Chapman stick,I dated his daughter .once

  • Hi Nick,

Don't let mallek1989-critics plink your deeply nimble heart, mind, and fingers. They who crank that you are not playing *your* stick like *your* stick supposedly "should" be played are not only ultra-orthodox establishmentarians with sick old shriveled up and dying egos grasping to control the Muse (because in dying they are afraid to surrender to Goddess Muse Herself), but hypocritically, they play their mouths like urinals -a Truly incorrect usage of Mother Tongue.

    Trey Self

  • In music ALL IS ALLOWED, narrowminded ones!

  • Really great playing. Cool ideas and an interesting way to use an instrument that has all sorts of potential.

Shame about al the stupid haters who are missing the point.

  • Sounds like an awesome bass guitar lovechild then on some of the bends it sounds like a bagpipe haha!

  • that is the how you cant play the capman stick.... IF YOU PLAY LIKE YOU HOW IN THE VIDEO...BETTER GET A GUITAR :/

  • @CatitoCore ..Nick Beggs mastred the Guitar in about 6 months and moved onto bass because he wanted a challenge.

  • nice playing, i love the wide neck as i could probably use it only as a six string like a regular 6 stringed electric but more space between the fingers & that's the beauty of a wide neck guitar without the extra material in the way, just the essentials-guitar and neck. i need to $ one with a 1/4" jack output for amp effects.

  • some of ya need to contact ur GP...

  • awsome

  • I'm actually glad to see this video, as it shows a style of playing that other videos do not. Rarely do you hear any kind distorted rhythm guitar sound on a stick. This is a good contrast to other videos, as it shows just how crazy versatile the stick is.

  • That evil, satisfied grin you give at the end was awesome. Perfect end to that.

  • Big Bubbles, No Troubles. Still one of the greatest pop songs and grooves

of the 20th century! I liked it so much, I even bought the album! Good to see you

    still grooving Nick...

  • I do believe Nick can play what the fuck he likes!

By the way Nick, I'd love to see you play an actual 6 string guitar as you very obviously can.

  • @pawnsacrifice1

    so u really do ??

y then 6-string guitar if he can play anything he wants ??

    dont be twat

  • @progresman you want to try that in English so I might understand what the fuck you are talking about?

  • That was my first thought too: THE Nick Beggs. I liked it.

  • kajagoogoo 2 u 2

  • it's great!

  • Love it! Rock on!

  • hottest chic ever!!!

  • Oh no, musical nazis are posting out rules on playing the stick. What's wrong with playing guitar stuff on it? It's not like this is a representative video on stick's features, is it?

  • Is this THE Nick Beggs ??? Sweet !!! Well for the people slaggin you (who don't know who you are) there is no wrong way to play an instrument...as long as YOU enjoy what you do. Rock on... !!!

  • oh terrible,I think you don't have a self-censorship, think about visitors before adding something like this...back to the school with you

  • Hi Nick, great to see you having so much fun on this one.

  • .........If these kids knew who they were talking to. LMFAO Everyone is an expert!

  • @hallman321 not experts, just damn critics

  • Nice stick work from one of the greatest bassists of the 80's. My humble opinion..........good to see you still rockin Nick!

  • Keep rocking dude these moaner's are just jealous

  • Cool!

  • sorry it s horrible ! pouaaaa ptff beurk.... stop that man supply you

    thanks

  • yea this is kinda icky

  • let him play what he wants... why not strumm the stick? Take a bow, play it like a violin or a contrabass... Tap it or do what ever you like!

All you purists, enviers, grudgers and quarrelsome people: Press the stop-button go to the next video and yeah...

Fuck off and let people have fun with their instruments, goddamn!

  • he can play what he want, ther must be freedom of expression so leave him alone you little envious cunts

  • Kind of ignores the whole point of a Stick doesn't it? The stick was meant to be tapped not strummed. That's what a guitar is for. Owning a stick obviously does NOT make you a stick player. Check Rob Martino. I click on this link by accident. A total disappointment. I'm not bashing! I'm just making a statement which if you knew anything about the Chapman Stick, you would agree with.

  • Or he could just keep doing what he's doing, because this is America, and he can play it on a stick if he wants to. Quit with the butthurt, because absolutely nobody on the internet cares what you think.

  • @PaganWarDrummer Really? Apparently there are at least a few people who agree with me. Considering one of the top rated comments mentions the exact same thing.

I know that Mr. Beggs plays at least one song that is appropriate for the stick. Strumming on the Stick is like wiping your butt with $20.00 bills. Sure, you can do it but why? Toilet paper is cheaper and much more comfortable.

Likewise Playing this on a guitar would probably be easier and would probably sound better. Pickups and all

  • Agree? Maybe. Care? Absolutely not. And who are you do judge what is appropriate for the instrument, or for that matter, what he can and cannot do with his instrument? He payed an obscene amount of money for the thing, so let him do what he wants. And some people enjoy discomfort.

Maybe he's playing this as a challenge, considering a regular guitar would be easier and he made the conscious decision to use a stick.

  • @PaganWarDrummer Apparently what I say matters to you enough for you to respond. LOL. Enjoy it if you like. That's your prerogative. Not liking it is mine. Opinions you know. Everyone has one. I wonder what Emmett Chapman's opinion is on this?

They say you can use an SM57 as a hammer. Expensive hammer.

I'm sure people care as much about your opinion as they do mine. But, I'm just another guitarist. What do I know?

  • Never said I enjoyed it. He payed a couple thousand dollars for the instrument, so let him go. What the fuck should you care if he's strumming it? If you see something you don't like, just navigate yourself away from this page and forget it ever happened.

Emmett Chapman doesn't care. He's a dick, number one, and two, he already has this poor sap's money.I understand nobody excepts my opinion, I accepted it ages ago. I'm just letting you know now that you might want to undergo that project.

  • @PaganWarDrummer And yet, here you are asserting your opinion. Ironic.

  • @PaganWarDrummer Also, have you actually MET Emmett Chapman? I wonder. I would bet you are just trying, again, to give your opinion girth. I have not met either man and would not say that either is "a dick". But alas, this is going way off topic and I don't want to draw it out any longer. Please be my guest and have the last word.

  • yes he is

  • He is overrated by these comments, he may has some nice riffs, but he has nothing to do with a chapman stick, he could have played it on a guitar.

Im not saying that he is a bad artist, but this is like using only one string on a 6string bass.

  • @kukaaac Then why don't you post yourself playing something?

  • @MrBLKMETAL Cause I suck at playing any instument, but it's not the point. He has some other songs, playing the chapmain stick right, but this is trash.

  • @kukaaac And the problem with that is?

  • awesome talent..

  • thats f***ing awesome. I desperately need to add one of those to my rig

  • Aahhhh incredible - Love it!

  • The tools don't matter, the rules don't apply. In fact, there are no rules. I thought the purpose of making music was self-expression and on that score, I think he succeeds.

  • i want one

  • Ahem are those Kajagoogoo gold discs on the wall ?

  • @balderic0

I do believe they are balderic. Nice observation. Surely they can't belong to Mr. Beggs! One of the greatest bass lines of the 80's!

  • Love your Stick work, Nick. Got to see you rock it live with JPJ in Orlando years ago. Really shows the versatility of the instrument.

  • oh, btw, all the haters, he's actually using it quite the wat it is "SUPPOSED" to. The idea is 2 sorta play the bass and the guitar (and a few more things) together.....if u get what I mean........ theres no "CORRECT" way to play it. remember: its all correct as long as it soungs right!

  • first reaction...... O.O OMG O_O !

  • Seems like a guitarist that likes to play good instruments. Like that.

  • I'm selling my chapman stick.

Don't hesitate contact me for further details.

  • Great!...why don't you show us, how to play "White Feathers" bassline (on the bass!)? thank you!

  • Too many HATERS!! Nick Beggs has incredible talent. Whether you like what he's playing or not, you MUST admit, he is an awesome musician!

  • and that's why humanity will never move forward...too many haters :p

  • sorry, rubber bands on a ruler!

  • It sounds good, but thats not the way to play that instrument... better use a guitar to play that...

  • bad ass a guitar and bass in one!

  • I'm sorry. Even though you got some sick riffs, I feel that it there's no point in playing that on a stick if you could play that and make it sound so much better on a guitar. That's a waste of the sticks potential; especially with the looping back track.

  • @mallek1989 This instrument was made with the idea of opening up new ideas, it was not invented to constrict a player to playing 2 handed tapping. Check out Tony Levin's Elephant Talk.

  • @mallek1989 agreed. this shit sounds awesome, but just play it on guitar. take advantage of how expansive the chapman stick is. C'mon, at least tap out some chords on your right hand while playing a melody/lead on the other hand.

  • @mallek1989 check out his other vid... hes playing the stick in the way you see not as a waste of potential.... think it's called tava

  • @mallek1989 how about he play it his way and you play it your way?

  • @mallek1989 boooo your ignorant... boooo

  • @mallek1989 Whoah! I so disagree! Why try to compare shit!? C'mon, music is music. Does it really matter how it's 'triggered'? Nick is an amazing talent!! Have you heard this guy play bass? Esp. slap bass. Your comment has just rendered most modern instruments redundant. Particularly with the advent of MIDI. It's all music, and it should all be embraced! The Chapman Stick is an amazing instrument. It just opens the whole game up. Why can this be a bad thing. More power to music, is what i say...

  • The way he's playing, the solo's kinda sounds like a bagpipe on steroids.

  • So many stick players play like they are competing to see how many notes they can play at once. They all kinda end up sounding the same. Great to see this. Yeah!

  • WOW!!!

  • this is fucking awesome.

  • Far stretch from your work with Kajagoogoo! I love it!

  • i aint dissin your playing... it sounds great, but whats the point of playing a chapman stick if you are not going to play the bass side at the same time you play the guitar side?

  • I'd assume for the benefits of the tapping style over strumming/plucking. Also, if you know the instrument and can make it sound good, you don't have to do everything with it at once, even if you could. Like you said, it sounds great.

  • well, ive seen a couple of styles of play, and the more intricate just strikes my ear. i know exactly what youre saying about playing everything all at once, i play too... check out my vids.... it just seems to me i would want the max sound you could get out of that expensive toy hehe .... someday i'll have one, until then i'll listen to fellow utubers play.... i tune my acoustic to (low to high) C E C G C F its an open citern tuning, you should try it on the stick and tune the bass likewise

  • good point

  • Search up a song called "turn your back on me" to find out that Nick does indeed use both sides of the instrument.

  • great performance!!!!!!!! ecx!!!

  • props dude. this is so dope!

  • this is the first time Ive seem a chapman stick. those things are fucking sweet. I want one. what do they go for?

  • It IS nice to see a different approach to the Stick (or touchy things in general). Just because I can play 2 things at once does not mean I have to.

  • Just listened to Rob Martino, thought he was good but your fuckin awesome man

  • DUDE! I play metal bass, and have been wanting to play rhythm too, but didn't know if the stick was a good option. Very well done! I think you may have sold me on one!

  • fucking awesome!

  • Nice to see a different approach to the Stick.....Good work!! The more I hear the different style and approaches the more I want one!

  • 素直にguitarを弾け!

  • Maybe I'm crazy, but does anybody else hear a little Legend of Zelda influence on some parts?

  • He did the score for zelda! Nice observation.

  • I think the point here, is this is a simple demonsration of another element of the Stick. I don't think he is trying to compete with Steve Vai, or suggesting people go out and buy a C. Stick instead of a guitar....(this comment for those below who are obviously intimmidated by the unkown)

  • NICK BEGGS ROCKS!!!

  • Kill it. Just put that poor instrument out of it's misery and buy a normal guitar. :(

    Mr Chapman weeps....

  • nick beggs is my favorite bassist ever! you rock!

  • This could've easily been accomplished on a guitar...and undoubtedly sounded way better. thumbs down for cost effectiveness

  • he might like playing that better then a regular guitar but it would sound way better on a regular guitar

  • You rock dude. Liked it a lot. First real rock I've heard on the stick!

  • this instrument has so many possibilites and it can replace alot.

  • you suck

  • I don't know much about this instrument but it seems to me that in the right hands it could replace both a bass and a guitar? Or a piano?

What clef is the music written in?

Is it both bass and treble like a piano?

  • along with the guitar and bass this instrument can actually replace human life on this planet - much like you see in those terminator movies. Also, you have to admit this lady is beautiful!

  • thats a guy! haha

  • I'm guessing he's using distortion with another effect...?

  • I am stunned by the sheer number of moronic comments about this vid. The playing is great Nick.

  • dude .. you need a guitar it cost around ..and a guitar will cost u less not 2000..

its a intrument for do piano things ..:P

  • grande !!! ...........mikki italian boy

  • Nick and his stick, Sunday evening doesn't get much better than this. Only thing missing is a large bar of chocolate :-)

  • The Chapman Stick is made so you can play bass AND guitar together in this unique sound.Any way you please.Looking any way you want.Over any soundtrack you please.Even if it's the same ol' same ol'.

  • That thing's gotta be a b**** to tune.

  • lol I agree

  • Actually, because Chapman Sticks are made of laminated wood which is far stronger than the vast majority of guitar or bass necks and that the string tension is far less than either, I've heard from players that have gone on vacation for a month and come back to find their Sticks in perfect tune. :D

  • I though he was a woman!!

  • it's guitar music played in a chapman stick...

  • love to hear him do a cd with francis dunnery.....awesome that would be

  • great man...wonderfull

  • Nick, you're the most skilled and the best lookin stick players on YT :D You remind me that playing music should be effortless and fun.

    Absolutely LOVE your attitude.

  • playin guitar on a chapman stick (?)

  • Why not? The Stick is a more generalized musical instrument than a guitar. Guitar technique is just one of many techniques available to a Stickist.

The Stick broadens the musical pallet available to a performer, who can switch between techniques and sounds at will, or can blend them any way (s)he chooses.

  • you're absolutely right. But my point is that playing what he does on the Chapman stick is like if the bass player from ac/dc bought a 6-string

  • You should check out his work with John Paul Jones on the Zooma tour - unbelievably crunchy and amazing. I still drool thinking about it!

  • nick beggs v franciss dunnery!!! whos the daddy?

  • very nice vid

    love the music!

  • Why isn`t he just doing such stuff with Kajagoogoo. They could do so much better if they would use their real skills.

  • listen to "homelands" By Ellis, Beggs and Howard - especially "big bubbles no ttroubles"

  • Very Impressive control on the "stick" way to go Nick!! I like it a lot!!

  • 666...

  • Everybody wants to play fast (which you can do) but man are you good at slow too. TASTY!

  • very cool, never seen one of those before :)

  • and really, that is just it!

  • too fuggin amazing... thats it!

  • that was so fuckin bad ass!

  • i love this cat

  • sweet!

  • keep it up! tell all them haters to kiss off, it's not to often where you can find someone who's talented that can play lead bass, sing, and play that wicked stick. :) at least u have hair, so ppl don't be ragging about his hair cuz he's not bald like u prolly are.

  • Absolutely incredible. Nick I always knew you were an accomplished musician especially with Kajagoogoo but you're on a another planet when it comes to the Stick!

  • Just awesome...tho the BS drums are a distraction

  • That was awesome

  • Nick Beggs wow I watched the too shy video and told my friend how awesome the bassist was.Googled your name and you are truly an amazing guitarist. Thanks for the post.

  • dude that was fuckin sick i wanna to get one of those

  • fucking amazing damn now i want to try and learn the chapman stick

  • Woo just met Nick at Retrofest yesterday, great guy!!

  • Nick, Fab!! Dont know much about geeetars but my friend has been in a band since 80's and plays a variety of guitars and thinks the Chapman Stick is a very difficult bad boy to play so...we are not worthy!!!!! I am so looking forward to seeing you at Retrofest on Sun 31st!!! I am going all out to get your paw print.xxxx

  • O.O ......whoa like...whoa man sick

  • hi nick

    great playing mate.

looking forward to seeing you and the guys at milton keynes in december.

  • wicked playing man

  • What's a guy doing wearing a hairband?

    Great playing though.

  • simply not to have his hair in his face while playing =) Logical, no ?

  • logic might be cutting it .

  • Logic might be... who gives a goddamn whether he's wearing a headband or not?!

  • Yeah Nick, the great bassplayer from Kajagoogoo and "Ellis, Begg and Howard" he was one of the first guys how played this stick commercially. Well done, Nick you are great, like always, from you I've learned "forgiveness is the key"

  • cool, keep it up

  • it's a dude.

  • try becoming his groupie and see :)

maybe you will hit some high notes

  • the melody sounds alot like the Terminal Velocity menu song. (its a PC game)

  • Primal scream!!

  • UHUUUUUUUUUUUU!!! this song remaind a fusion of Lenny Kravitz and solos of Slash in Guns N´Roses and a little bit of the crazy staff of Michael Manring! Psycho!

  • whoa... my video card sucks and i thought this was a chick until halfway through the video

  • is not your its the video

  • this is fantastic.nick you are the best bass player in pop music right behind edward edwards and mark king.we are waiting for kajas europe tour.

  • your a joke

Behold...The Arctopus is like having aids in my ears

I have herd better industrial noises

  • Lol, thats a nice way to describe them. Btw, i wasnt implying by any means that BtA are an amazingly talented band when it comes to composition, but in terms of tapped instruments...they are FAR in front of this man, however over pretensious their music may be.

  • just get a guitar dood

  • ohhhh this guy should be on my radio not the sad pathetic teen wannabe rockers
