"don't have any of those" tools or gauges? If you leave the ALDA off you will need a boost gauge at least. You can rig one up with a vacuum/pressure gauge.
If removing the ALDA made no difference, the ALDA was not causing slow acceleration. Check your throttle linkage. Have someone sit in the car and slowly work the pedal all the way up and down. If they can't move the mechanism as much as you can by hand, you'll need to adjust the throttle linkage to take the slack out.
To be honest, I'm just holding on to this car because it was given to me by my aunt. I now have a 300SDL and I like that car much better and i've even tampered with that ALDA with good results...tried to achieve that here...and...well you know.
How much is a boost gauge? I really don't want to spend for this when I have to worry about green coolant and new fan clutch on the OM603
If the throttle is adjusted so that the car is slow, wouldn't that be a good thing considering that there is not as much fuel delivery? The thing is I don't want to spend for this car, but I don't want to wreck it. Can I just keep a light foot on the accelerator?
If the throttle is adjusted TOO slow you'll never get any RPM or power when you need it. BUT at the same time you'll never know what the EGT or manifold pressure is - you should know at least ONE when the ALDA is off. If you try to heavy accelerate and see thick black smoke, let off the pedal. Remember the ALDA only works on acceleration so once you are up to speed and sustaining, say, 60mph, you'll need the throttle to go to that range.
Take the ALDA off completely until you can get another.....IIRC 27mm wrenches under the bottom will work. **BUT** BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT FULL THROTTLE TAKE OFFS, don't do them. It will run very rich under acceleration but OK under cruising, watch your temp. If you leave it off you'll need a manifold boost gauge and pyrometer to avoid overheating pistons.
I remember being told that. I don't have any of those....and for the meantime I already took it off...it accelerates at the same slow rate as it did before I broke it. Do I still need those fancy gauges?
If your going to remove the ALDA its advised to buy a pyro gauge, just by looking at the temp gauges is not good enough, because your exhaust temp can reach over the 1200*F mark (max exhaust temp range) and that can melt your piston, exhaust manifold, exhaust valve and your cylinder head and that could lead into getting a new engine so if your planning to remove it just get a pyro gauge, its costy but better than rebuilding or buying a new engine. look them up at peachpartsdotcom, best forum.

Sometimes WalMart has vacuum/pressure gauges for under $20 but you'll need to use some vac hose to run it into the passenger area.
