i've just cut blackberry briars for skep making. Do I leave it to dry a bit before splitting or do I split it now whilst green? Also, did you just ram and join the straw together in your hands as you needed to replenish the rope? Some advocate using a cow horn. Is your hat for the skep so that you can place a feeder inside if needed?
You can split them straight away. Yes, add straw when needed by inserting into the end and I do use a ring to hold it all together. The top is where the bees produce clean honey.
Ive used a tool like that in the past for making rope fenders for my boat. I think its called a "fid" I carved mine from wood.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, it is called a fid and there are many different sizes and shape variations.
