I cannot believe how MUCH i have enjoyed this drive. You have inspired me. I will now do similar. Thankyou so much for a touch of the mundane yet real. 5 stars++ I drive a HiAce myself.
@Bevoin1970 I hated driving through there Paul, which a did quite a few times whilst travelling through London.....we lived in Essex for a few years.....Bob
Thanks Andy, yes it does appear that I do a lot of night time driving, Im on 24hr call, if Im driving during the night it is most likely because Im doing a Parcel run / trunk run etc. When I get back home, if Im feeling ok, I then do my day driving should any work come my way... Im self employed and therefore have to take what comes as and when it does.
Southbound it is 15' 6" clearence; northbound only 13' 3".
Sounds like a vehicle in front of you had triggered the overheight warning sensor. All hell breaks loose when you do. Lights flash, warning sign goes on and 'Tunnel Control' shouts at you. There is an escape lane at 5:01
Hanging from the roof of the right hand lane there are chains then rubber pipes; stops you cutting corners as you go through!
My 1st ever experience of Blackwall was delivering electrical cable to a new multiplex cinema near exit on northbound side. I shouldn't have gone down it, ( a women gave me directions ) took about 1hour plus to get back due to serious traffic congestion, never forgot it.. I had several other drops that day, it put my whole day out...ha ha. Why the height diff I wonder? I could hear the chap on the Tannoy, heard white van!, then wondered what was going on as you do.. :-) Thanks for the info Ian.
The northbound tunnel is the old original one built in 1897 so everything was horse drawn. It was two way until 1967 when the southbound tunnel opened.
It's one of the few parts left of a never completed inner ring motorway. The tunnels and roads leading to them were the eastern side. There are other parts (A40 Westway, odd bits in south London etc) that were part of the plan.
My uncle worked on the original plans towards the end of the war (County Of London Plan 1943)
Thanks Ian, such an in-depth answer to my Q, I never knew any of this stuff, I certainly wont forget it now. You just educated a Midlander...!!! :-)))
Thats it Andy, you've got it. take that route and you'll be ok. You can't see it in my video because it was too dark, but quite literally as you emerge from the tunnel and look to your left you can see the O2 arena. You can see the brown info signs in this video showing you the way. Its only a stones throw away from the Blackwall tunnel. Thanks for watching Andy
Reminds me of the time my brakes nearly failed on that sharp bend going northbound...It was fortunate that I was wearing brown trousers at the time! 5*
Thanks Bernhard, no it is 2 tunnels, southbound and northbound, 1 way in each tunnel and no toll fee. At the start of this video you will see the second tunnel on the right hand side... Thanks for the icy stars. :-)
I thought I was at the time, I wondered what was going on... ha ha. Because I only ever go through this tunnel once every so often, I have never experienced this before, so it was all new to me... :-)
It sounds as has the clutch from the cooler fans jammed on your Sprinter . To recognize on the vacuum cleaner sound (0:10 to 0:15 sec) during acceleration. To Control it, shut the engine off and try to turn the fan. Does the fan not spinning, is the clutch broken. Can your spinning the fan with resistance is it OK. If not, it takes power from the engine (roundabout 2-4kw) and increases fuel consumption. There is no problem driving with it.
Thanks for all the info. Yes I can turn the fan with slight resistance when the engine is switched off. I have had a problem twice now where engine lacks power on acceleration. I suspected the turbo, but if I switch off the engine, then restart it everything is ok again...?? Any idea..??
Thanks for being my passenger Andy, I seem to visit London more in the dark than the light... ha ha. It's a fantastic city if your a tourist, but not so good if your driving a truck, you need eyes everywhere... ha ha. I will send you a link to a better video than this. Thanks Andy. :-)
I know what you mean because I had a previous video do that for some reason, but I have just watched this myself all the way through with no problem. Its still being processed by YT at the moment, so maybe its just one of those things...
@liam21157 Thank you Liam, I shall keep making them if you keep watching them.. ha ha ha. :-)
