in the pw story line, dinosaurs all came from the parallel world with no time periods, they managed to get through other portals that explain the fossil remains

In comprehensible terms the portal didn't just simply open a gateway to the past, go to 1 period (late cretaceous), then transport them to wherever the game takes place, no.

The portal traveled throughout the entire fabric of time in the planet's past and, for whatever reasons, picked on selective dinosaurs / mammals from the ice age.

The past animals picked were completely random, depending on your way of thinking, so, in order to make sense, the selection was random.

well no, in paraworld they all lived in the same time, just different climates so all it did was go from one dimension to another, picking up several animals from the planet, not through time.
