THX 1138 is NOW. Security cameras, traffic cameras and cellphone cameras are omnipresent and record everything. Vicodin, Xanex, Percoset and every other psychopharmaceutical keep the masses docile and dopey. Religion and contraceptives discourage meaningful sexual intimacy and controls the population.. Workplace micro-management instills oppression and mindless compliance. Consumerism for the sake of consumerism is a way of life. What's wrong? Nevermind.
Yup - what is with those troglodyte humanoids in the tunnels toward the end?
1.) Narratively totally unnecessary and therefore cheap exploitation
2.) Adding them creates a sub-narrative that is never explained-who are they? and "oh ,this society is more complex than we thought" when the whole point of the film up until then is that it is an utterly simplistic society
3.) The troglodytes only add one more instance of digital effects that look digital and ruin the minimalism of the 1971 footage.
I don't get it, they had such great vision back then and now they are older and have years of experience and resources to season them.... and the directors cut is so cheesy -where did they go wrong?
@mindrapeart I'm sure you were joking but you could be true in a round about way. after I typed this, I learned they updated the film with CGI for a longer chase scene. Also, not related. I understand it was a film school project. Or maybe that was the film "Dark Star" I was thinking about.
Forgot how good this film actually is. Visually and technically stunning and works better than similar themed 2004 film Equilibrium'. Scary view of what the future may bring.
I saw this movie when it was first released. Now you know how old I am! There were a bunch of fims like this in those days -- Soilent Green, etc. The anti-establishment perception that Western democracies were transforming into police states and that people would become slaves to computers and technology in an approaching 1984 senario gave rise to the Hippie movement, or was a contributing factor. There was a lot of drug induced paranoia in those days but a lot of creativity emerged from it.
@LilNickWales ... Hey, here's another one for the wife from that era: The Helstrom Chronicals. It's about insects. There's some incredible photography. You won't have a clue what it's about till you see it, if you haven't already. It's on YouTube.

You got that right brutha. The original is an understated study in setting a sustained mood. It's beautiful. The "Director's cut is total bullshit.
