you have to remember that DeNiro is terrible in interviews. He says this himself. When he was starting out, he'd ask the casting director to just jump to the scene and audition the work. Terribly shy person that happens to be an artist in a mostly "unshy" medium.

You can't blame the classic-era Hollywood actors anymore. In modern times Hollywood is entirely run by a bunch of no-talent hacks who couldn't make a masterpiece if their life depended on it. We don't have very good screenwriters anymore, we don't have very good visual or intellectual directors anymore. Actors act for a living, that is how they get paid. You can't blame someone like De Niro for having made poor films recently, because his job is to act, his job is to be on the screen regardless.

Most actors, despite how well they can act, are merely lucky they landed classic roles like a Godfather Part II or a Clockwork Orange. Most good actors probably will never even get a chance to become one. DeNiro, Pacino, Brando, they all got lucky. They landed multiple great roles. If DeNiro could play the title role iN THERE WILL BE BLOOD, he would've, but he wasn't approached. Think of it like this: you can't blame a smart man for having no friends if he is in a world full of retarted people.
