The dictionary def of ritz is "ostentatious luxury and glamour", so the term "putting on the ritz" is living in elegance and luxury and making a big show of it. Think Las Vegas. A huge show, pretty lights, pretty girls, fame, fortune... but in reality it's just a desert.
