LOL, great vid. I can't really say I find this aircraft 'Beatiful' though... Great piece of engineering, something Airbus can be proud of but a beaty? No...
Making a video out of futile news and mocking an international airline company, ... wow thank God few people do that because that does not improve people's life. If at least it made us laugh...
As long an an aircraft is taxiing on its assigned taxyway centerline, he is supposed to be cleared of other aircraft.
An airplane is not like a car, you can't estimate if your wings are gonna hit anything (IF you can see them...), so you just focus on being exactly on your centerline of the taxiway.
Now if another comair jet is not fully in his parking position, thus the separation between aircrafts parked and aircraft taxiing on the taxiways centerline is not assured anymore.
It's Comair pilots responsability to notify air traffic controller about it. So they won't assign the taxiway just behind them for A380 or any other aicraft...
Flew Air France Paris - Miami, Nov 2010. Damn worst flight ever. Oldest 747 in existence, dirty, rattling, arrogant flight attendants, smallest leg room ever. Those were the good points! Never ever fly with them again. Oh the doughnut was ok.
It's Comair pilots responsability to notify air traffic controller they are not in their parked position. Air France pilots were assigned this taxiway by air traffic control, and they are cleared of any responsability as long as they are on their centerline, which they were.
I can give you the Toronto crash being air france pilots responsability.
@iaf22 The Comair, and all other Delta Connection aircraft, park in that area 100 times per day. The controllers are well aware that they are, quite often, unable to fully clear taxiway Alpha. Since Air France was following the CRJ, it is that crew's responsibility to make sure the aircraft in front have cleared before continuing. They did not do that, and they were also moving in excess of 22kts. Before you ask, I was based there for 5 years.
The fact Delta are used to it, and that controllers are well aware the aircraft are not fully parked or that you were based there : does NOTmean they don't have to inform other international traffic about it !!
This is international.
Personnal habits have no place in international airports.
If you are a pilot, you should know that it's completely IMPOSSIBLE to judge, from the cockpit, if a wingtip will clear an obstacle, no matter if you taxi 22 kts, 20 kts, or 2 kts !
This is exactly the reason why ATC (Air Traffic Control) should NOT clear you on a taxiway if the taxiway is not FULLY cleared. (which it obviously wasn't, as A380 was taxiing on the centerline of its assigned taxiway)
@iaf22 You are correct, and in the 380, you can't even see the wingtip (there needs to be a camera) When I am cleared to taxi up to and hold short of a runway, I wait my turn. Would be a little irresponsible to just run everyone over to get to the runway, even though I was cleared to taxi up to and hold short. Pilots are required to make judgement calls on a daily basis, and this was poor judgement on the AF crew. I do agree with you about the RIO, but not this one.
If other aircraft are in front of you on the same taxiway (and centerline) as you... of course u won't run them over.
in ALL other cases, (and this one too, since they were not on the same taxiway... as comair was not on the taxiway anymore and A380 pilots are unable to judge the distance) , there is a sentence to be used by controllers (who are supposingly more informed than pilots about airport traffics), the sentence is : "Hold short on taxiway xxx ABEAM parking position yyy".
The first time I heard of this incident, I couldn't help but think that it was a mid-air collision, head on and ev. The A380 would have just swallowed that thing and carried on flying.
@Rastakwer The final ruling is not out on flt 447 yet. Both Air France and Airbus have had manslaughter charges filed against them. They both knew of pitot system problems and did not fix. I think much will come of the investigation.
@Rastakwer what about flight 447? It crashed due to pilot error, so no, air france is not the most reliable airline. They are nice, but they are not one of the most reliable.
@navymmw The official findings are not out yet. Thee were know deficiencies in the pitot system and Air France did not repair. Both Air France and Airbus have had manslaughter charges filed against them as a result.
@logarblue wrong the first shot shows an A380 you can see it to the size of the engines, the slope on the tail, the massive wings, the position of the logo air france and the Huge nose...

Anyway, i guess you and i won't agree on this story. Lawyers and insurance will have to deal with this.
I would just say : in aviation, there is never just 1 side to blame...
Everybody share a part of responsability.
Too bad Media don't understand that.
