  • why make it that difficult to get the fucking sound?

  • I'm sad that I'll never be able to go into a diner and have coffee and a cigarette. I am, however, a big fan of pie can coffee. History repeats itself, I guess.

  • @DinosaurCop It was great while it lasted man, my friends and I used to go and solve the world's problems over coffee and cigarettes. To hell with Michigan.

  • Greatest video ever!!!!

  • I'm embarrassed for Iggy Pop

  • Who gave this thumbs down? GAH THEY ARE GENIUSES.

  • It's amazing how someone as withered as Iggy can be so youthful. He's a prime example that you can be young at any age.

  • Tom Waits makes Iggy Pop look like a nerd.

  • one of my fave scenes from this movie

  • @WhatDoesAScannerSee It doesn't look anything like 80s

  • Iggy looks like John Cazale in this video.

  • LOL thats awsome!

  • yeaah it was a medical morning

  • So much tension...

  • They should really fix the link.

  • Lol, Tom Waits and Iggy Pop toasting coffee mugs to IHOP.... is there anything more awkward? :-p

  • Fuck cant get the sound

  • I love this scene.

  • Yes... very strange, the thing with the url, but fuckin-A, it works, good old sound.

    Iggy Fuckin Pop.

    Tom Waits.

    Smokin cigarettes.

Great art comes from our greatest vices, I think.

Me, no cigarettes no more, just coffee.

No alcohol, no heroine, no crystal, no crack, just coffee.

Lots and lots of fuckin coffee.

    ...mmmm, coffee.

    Now I want a cigarette...

  • YouTube doesn't recognise greatness, which is why it removed the sound!

  • is this a part of the movie?

  • @zcguitar yep, its from movie called "Coffee and Cigarettes" :)

  • why is iggy pop wearing a shirt

  • @HamGreenandEggs Because he quit wearing them 25 years ago so it's fine... 'cause he quit...

  • @klearkalet thanks!

  • Never get tired of this

  • Please re-post with the audio -one of my favorite movie scenes !

  • Who's the artist playing in the background? It's nice "coffee and cigarettes" music.

  • well sure since I quit hahaha love these two

  • That was so amazing to watch! It had the same hypnotic quality to me that I got from Pulp Fiction in that I was just soaking up every word of the dialogue and I wanted to watch it forever. I really want to see this movie now! I still find it funny to think that media company executives are trying to shut down these kind of clips from YouTube when after seeing it now all I want to do is buy or rent it on DVD and wouldn't have otherwise. Two brilliant men and I'm excited to see the movie!

  • He's a doctor! Just like RZA!

  • watching this when i wake up. drinking coffee and having a cig. feels like im right there with em.

  • the audio doesn't work because of the HAARP!!!

  • wow. That's a great pickup! I've listened to this a bunch of times. I wonder how you figured that extension out, better yet will it work on other silent videos....lol. thanks.

  • as he said in description, add &fmt=18 to the end of the video url to get sound to work :)!

  • Haha, "the beauty of quitting is that now that I've quit, I can now have one....cause I've quit." I'm so using that one next time someone mentions quitting to me.

  • Ahora sí, MoFos!

  • me sale mudo! :(((

  • This is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ever wonder what it would be like to see two pop culture hero's behave like self conscious 1st year acting students? This video really sucks... sucks pickled swine testicles.

  • @bmalgs Iggy does not behave badly! That's really what he's like, personable, etc.(according to what i've heard)

  • @bmalgs In your opinion how should they act? since you seem to talk as if you know them personally.

  • 'Couple a rocks stars getting crazy between gigs.

  • eyy, no sound!

  • eyy, no sound!

  • 'i don't know what you're trying to tell me, you mean, drumming on my records sucks?' ^^

  • they think, you must be over 18, it's to hard for kids, but other music is not.......

  • Love all the awkward silence in this little flick.

  • 'maybe we could go to taco bell or something maybe thats more your style'

  • i like how he calls him jim during the goodbye. "heh, he's not on here either"

  • Iggy= God of Rock circa 1970

Waits= Low key grungy guy who fans rabbit on about causing me to get pissed off

  • @blacknganga Cool story bro.

  • @blacknganga

Iggy = God of Rock circa 1970

Waits = God of All Music circa Eternity

  • @oisinallen Waits is a low-key type of dude who doesn't even make it on to any decent radar of "what is influential". However, I can understand if he sort of stands as some sort of "underground superstar" for you. Maybe you quite like Howling Wolf too, eh?

  • @oisinallen Waits is somewhat disrespectful to Iggy. Iggy ALMOST deserves it, because he has been compromising his own legend and legacy since 1979 with his mediocre releases and appearances in film etc.

  • @blacknganga You realize this is a film, and it's scripted, right?

Iggy's a great artist, but as you said, appearing in Commercials, etc. wasn't a good career move.

And Tom Waits is off-the-radar because he isn't Mainstream, and unlike most artists, he doesn't change his music to try and become a "superstar". While you might not like his music, I personally think he is one of the greatest artists of all time.

  • @oisinallen I just have to be a rather mad fan of the Magic Band, and if you like your favorite artists to have ripped a style from here or there, then Tom Waits is for you. Van Vliet had an extreme, singular vocal style that has been called "the greatest white soul singer ever", amongst other things. If you are ignorant of the vocal stylings of Van Vliet, then, Waits is for you. Waits all but admits that he lifted the other artists voice, but I don't want to make you stubborn, friend.

  • @blacknganga If you connect "popular" with "great", then I simply can't discuss music with you. Some great artists are popular, and some popular artists are great; but there is no correlation between greatness and popularity.

And yes, Tom Waits sometimes sounds similar to Van Vliet. But that is the ONLY artist who Waits is remotely similar to. Most artists sound similar to dozens of others; Waits is only vaguely similar to one.

  • @oisinallen Not "pop" appeal, silly, "popular" appeal, as in "The canon of popular culture/music". Robert Johnson has entered into the annals of popular music. Of course Waits' music is included under the blanket of popular music-only world and classical music and some ambient/industrial/techno escape this categorisation. My point is that waits "cashed in" on another artists ideas, no doubt. It's not vague, it is ENTIRE, a point that Waits only in part admits.

  • @oisinallen No, i didn't ever realize that, I thought it was them chatting. Are you sure of that? There would be at least some ad libs in there. Is this a tongue in cheek way of making waits look like a complete prick? Why would they want to do that?

  • Yeah o k, what other "greatest artists of all time" do you like, if you don't mind me asking?

  • @blacknganga The comment that Waits "is one of the greatest artists of all time" .... I just don't think stacks up. He doesn't have the sort of popular appeal that lends his art to comparison. It's just like he wants to disappear down some sort of underground funnel or something. He's so underground that I think he's entirely incomparable to every other "popular" artist.

  • @blacknganga Plus, Tom Waits' early years voice (before the heavy smoking and drinking) is wildly different to how it sounds today. And Waits frequently changes his vocal style for different styles of song.

And I knew you could tell it was a film, I was being sarcastic, as you were acting as if that was how Waits and Iggy ACTUALLY behaved towards each other. Even if it was partly ad-libbed or improvised (which it probably was), it still isn't Tom Waits' ACTUAL feelings towards Iggy.

  • @oisinallen I know Wait's voice was very different, a fact that supports my point totally. I've followed the press, etc. on this for quite a while, it's not as if there is any shortage of documents discussing the Waits/Van Vliet thing. Waits said his wife introduced him to The Magic Band, and shortly after that his voice metamorphed. To any Van Vliet fan this is entirely overt. "Big In Japan" for example. It's obviously no coincidence, he's actually p(l)aying a $ort of tribute.

  • @oisinallen Why does Waits come across as so insecure and desparate to assert some sort of ego upon the one-time godhead of rock? Surely this is not a parody of Waits real life person!? If that IS the case, then this level of sophistication of artefact would be lost on nearly everybody, including myself. I don't assume that is the case. It is very revealling though, Iggy coming across as humble and sensitive, Waits appearing insecure and insensitive Maybe Waits is nervous in such regal company?

  • @blacknganga Dude, this scene is from a MOVIE, they are hamming it up for fun in this crazy Jim Jarmusch flick. You can't take their performances in this scene as a reflection on their actual, real life character traits the same way that you it would be preposterous to believe Sam Worthington really IS an Avatar or that Mel Gibson truly behaves like the mysterious, tough hombre from the Mad Max movies.

  • @theraf2u What do you mean "hamming it up"? Bollocks, Iggy is hamming nothing up, he's just being himself. I don't know why Jarmusch would have made Waits into some egotistical, insecure, paranoid crackpot just for fun. This is the humble, normal guy Jim/Iggy is every day of his life (apart from when he's on a non-stop Iggy bender). Art imitating life? Hardly. Iggy and Waits exist in entirely different stratospheres, Iggy is only doing this shit to pay the bills.

  • @blacknganga Do you not know what a movie is? They are acting, it's not real. The hokey, canned dialog is a dead giveaway too.

  • @theraf2u I don't know anything about Waits, but I've followed Pop, and i didn't know it was scripted, because Pop seems very natural and "mirrors" exactly what I assumed him to be like. Did you read my comment to yourself. Are you very young? Shit, I havent even watched this for five years, I'll watch it now.

  • @theraf2u No, I thought they were making all that "hokey" shit up on the spot. No? I don't care. It's quite tepid to think this shit was scripted. I suppose, Waits is an alco, ain't he? & we know about Iggy's past. Old men, incapable of spontaneity and ad-libbing?

  • @blacknganga Waits was playing himself, but not his actual personality; and part of that was this passive-agressive, slightly paranoid, obnoxious character. It's called acting.

Finally, here is an incomplete list of some other fantastic artists (of course, this is only my opinion):

Miles Davis / Claude Debussy / Chuck Berry / Robert Johnson / Sigur Rós / The Beatles / Erik Satie / Larry Adler...

These are by no means the best, they are just great artists. I'll get back to you with some more.

  • @oisinallen Is that what they are actually doing? They are there, attempting to reveal their real life selves with some sort of cinematic "veil" in front of the audience to mystify (mistify) viewers? Hmmm...maybe?... I'll check this out, I'm really interested now! Look sorry, I'm not (now) claiming that Waits is not a brilliant musician/performer, I just think he inhabits a musical/cultural territory that doesn't lend itself to comparison like many other artists.

  • is that the same table he plays under in, idont want to go video. looks like it

  • tom cuts the tension hahaha, cuts it right in half and cracks it off

  • you sayin i'm a taco bell kind of guy?

  • Sad. I was really hoping to HEAR this one. What happened?

  • @decay1966

How dit you find out the &fmt=18-thing?

  • @VLaKBaNK It's in the side bar info thing

  • to get sound you need to add ' &fmt=18 ' to the URl

  • @Sagrario17 thx

  • @decay1966

    what happened to the sound?

  • arrrrgh, motherfucking automatic audio-censorship. don't they know youtube is the new jungle drums of music? free advertisement! How many fans would the bands of the 80's 90's have if it were not for the cassette recorder.

my first rock album was a recording of two cassette players facing each other. in the end of the tape, you can hear my buddy's mom shouting "come and eat dinner!"

  • @rabagast19 Just add that &fmt=18 thing onto the end of the URL.

  • "Hey Tomster!"

    "Hey Piggy.. z'appenin' maan?"

    etc etc.

  • I have no idea why all off the sudden the audio doesn't work! Youtube must not like that the video almost has 2 million views!

  • @decay1966

was their also Tom Waits music in this scene?

You see, since today the corporations are riding an attack on YouTube with the help of Google. See also latest video of BeautifulGirlByDana for more news about it.

  • @decay1966

    Woaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

    I'm tripped the fuck out

  • @decay1966

That was very good from the part of you to give some instructions about the sound. I was looking for a problem in my computer at first by then I've found your indication for solving the problem. Thank you for this, but I don't believe that it was made intentionally by YouTube. It was just a mistake that nobody of the administrators mentioned it. Anyhow it's a good to hear conversation between two men in a coffee-bar. Nice :-)

  • @decay1966 yeah follow description its weird but it works

  • The diner in this scene is the same one where Tom's video for I Don't Wanna Grow Up was filmed.

  • best scene in the film, without a doubt.

  • I love this scene. Every time I see it, it is like: how much of it is 'acting'? It just seems so real, Like Iggy is really that empathetic and Waits is really that 'cool'?
