New to You Tube so not sure how things work

JUSTART, just use a suitable export format in your video software (you may need to save your video-clip on your computer and then to upload to youtube). I use Adobe Premiere Elements however you may use also Windows Live Movie Maker (free). It works in the same way - compose your photos/video-clips, choose transition effects, add music, etc.

I used Windows Movie Maker but the transition effects which I selected did not really work, not sure why, have to try again with my new video

Windows Live Movie Maker is the latest version of Windows Movie Maker and it has High Definition (1080p) export format. The 1080p youtube service is still still under test. In case the 720p/1080p HD button is not visible at your video-clip you may just add the option &fmt=22 for 720p and &fmt=37 for 1080p. The 1080p youtube service works better with the latest Adobe Flash Player 10.1 update and your video card latest update to handle GPU hardware-based H.264 video decoding.
