This is the best thing i have seen for ages, japan were so far ahead of there time, absolutely brilliant.haunting,so tight wow, everything is exceptional.anyone wanting to know anything about music should see this,.fantastic, thankyou so much.....Music nowadays is a sham, and there was this ,thank god i was an eighties child.
OGWT didn't allow lip syncing, I remember watching this live at the time and amazed. Any Japan fan ached to see them on TV which was relatively rare, bar a few crap totp events, they did a couple more appearances on here and both were great also. Saw them live @ leicester, simply superb, a shame they never got back in true form... a loss to music, RIP mick, simply great

The mesmerizing sound of an Oberheim OB-X is priceless...And the sound of a Travis Bean/ Wal fretless bass played by Mick Karn is leagues ahead of his contemporaries...RIP dear Mick.
Thank you so much for posting this wonderfully clear video. It's almost like being able to see them live. I think My New Career is still one of the most hauntingly moving songs I have ever heard. It's like Japan existed in some futuristic serene sidereal slipstream next to ours. I still have dreams about them sometimes at night.
Wow that was so tight and very mesmerising to watch... thank you so much for sharing...even' Annie's tartan fashion disaster could not ruin it for me!
@tommym1966 never ever? We were denied the pleasure of such an eclectic musical show on TV here ... maybe it's the sampled loops of those singular 'atmospherics' that recall the lush studio version. Sylvian's mic is on and it's a lot of fun
The travis bean that was stolen in London had a rare serial number of 003. This bass now belongs to some American and is logged on the Travis Bean database I imagine it has had afew owners since the great Mick Karn.
@bassatnight ah, ok, thanks. sounds like had had some bad luck with his instruments getting stolen. i'd like to read his book someday. I grew up not too far away from where he grew up.
@triphorn19 i,m not sure, but that bit abouth the bass getting stolen rings a bell, i read years ago that he played a wood wind instrument in his school orchestra (bassoon or clarinet, i think) and that got stolen aswell, and soon after he got a crappy 2nd hand bass ("very ropey, with strings a mile off the fret board!") and took the frets off and learned to play it in a very melodicl way like he played the woodwind instrument, that kind of explains the unusual approach to playing basslines.
Think about it...of all bands of their time and generation, no one has even attempted to imitate them...not even Sylvian or Rain Tree Crow...this sound is pristine and unparalleled...still. All fans of this...you are family. Cheers.
"AWESOME" I love this band forever a true fan.David Sylvian is just "AMAZING" SOOO much talent and a voice that could and still can make any woman drop to her knees.Love it : )
Just beautiful so sad mick has gone... Thanx for these brill clips, i remember begging my parents to turn over so I could watch this, takes me back*****
This looks great. The previous OGWT clip was pretty low quality. This one's so crystal clear I can see David Sylvian's mole on his lower left cheek. Before it was just a blurry mess of pancake make up.
@colel666 To get his sound you need a Wal Mark 1 bass guitar and use DR strings. Effects he has used include Korg G5 synth bass processor, Morley wah-wah pedal, Boss bass overdrive pedal (ODB-3), Lexicon vortex, Roland digital delay. The sound he has is very much based on how he plays and he was known to double track his bass in the studio at times (using DI rather than any amp) and to get this effect an octave pedal can be used live and I would guess that is what he is using on 'My New Career'.
@colel666 The Korg G5 synth bass processor is your best bet but if that is too expensive try an Octave pedal out. His sound is very much linked with the Wal bass he uses. I have used one before and it is the closest I have been to getting his tone however they are VERY expensive.
@Easyandy100 i read an article about Mick Karn years ago, i can remember him saying that he used compressors aswell, and that a man at a guitar shop that Mick visited said he picked up a fender and still sounded like Mick Karn! but its true what you say about the Wal basses, they always sound fat and growly! when i was watching this video, i was thinking at about 5:40 how unusual his right hand technique is, the way he hits the strings, its so unique. i tried to copy it, but i cant do it!
@johnstonutd i just watched the video again, i think the bass used here is a "kramer", they had aluminium necks, and a distinctive headstock, the tone still sounds like a wal to me though! what bass do you have?
@johnstonutd I did mention that his sound is based very much around how he played. His right hand technique is based on the technique double bass players use. The sound is fatter the closer you plauk the strings to the fret board. I have been trying to copy him for years as he is amazing but never succeeded so I gave up and went back to fretted bass. Good luck.
@Easyandy100 thats true what you say, i never saw him play with his right hand anywhere near the bridge, what always gets me is how rarely he looks down at his left hand!

Fantastic, I have all their albums on CD, and im a black guy who's into funk..
Japan in my opinion were inovators of the sound, and very funky with tight musicianship..

colel666 10 months ago
@colel666 You might want to try chorus combined with reverb. Should both be availbale on the Korg G5.
