Well positive emotions are just chemical reactipons. but that does not make them any less important. And the cause in nature may cause negative emotion to someone else.. so could be wrong.
If someone is truly insane and does not know the difference between right and wrong then yes you can't blame them for their actions. Did Stalin know the difference between right and wrong? Did he know it was wrong to murder millions of people? I believe he did and therefore he was in fact accountable for his actions. His upbringing and genetics are moot. But I agree with you we should befriend those that appear to be unfriendly. And depression is certainly not a choice in most cases.
Egoism - or doing what is best for yourself. is a form of morality many people subscribe to. They believe everyone should do the best to make there own lives enjoyable. this means that stalin could well have thought what he was doing was right in his view of morality. and hitler was definately doing it for a form of morality. Hitler believed he was doing good.
"...stalin could well have thought what he was doing was right..."
Both Hitler and Stalin knew murder was wrong. They simply tried to "justify" what they were doing by saying they had a "higher purpose." It's called "relative morality". Something you appear to subscribe to. Very dangerous. Without a moral compass to follow anything can be justified.
They saw jews as lesser than humans. you'd be surprised at what people can justify in there minds. and i'm not a moral relativist, i subscribe to a form of utilitarianism. Just like your belief system justifies the killing of gays (at least the literal text) for a higher purpose.
We'll 2 things 1.#I had a friend named mary who called herself "Raven" who each year would carve KURT into her right arm on the anniversary of cobains death 2#this one is really a question to an answer - Lets say you cloned Adolf Hitler but raised him in a peaceful environment and raised him in a jewish family ...now would his dna alone betray him and make him the monster he was or would the fact he grew up a "jew" and a pacifist would the clone hitler turn out to be a different person?
From what I've learnt and read and studied in general, I must admit that environment has a great effect on how a person turns out, even though I don't like that idea. I wouldn't dare guess what would become of that clone, but I would definitely bet he wouldn't turn out the same person. (Depending on how you define a person.)
Yepp, but it all depends on how you define things. We are human, because of our human DNA. This DNA determines how we will turn out on a vastly greater scale than our environment. So, how do you really define this? Taking away our genetics, we could act like birds or spiders, and our upbringing won't be able to change that. It's a highly unscientific discussion, really. :/
I'm an amateur psychologist and I saw an interesting programme about research on t identical twins and how they were seperated at birth but when they came back together some after 50 years apart they exhibited the same basic behaviour and beliefs. THis aalso has been evidenced in some beehvours of adopted childen too, but I wonn't really bore you!
However, this seems to indicate t that unless there are extreme factors in your environment or genetics that it is aabout a 60/40 split in favour of genetics over environment.
I thought this was a good video, however, it seems like this could be taken the wrong way, in that there is no accountability anymore if people are not responsible for their actions
Well what i describes basically was determinism. and it's pretty much fact. and i think people who do bad things should be stopped and changed just like the falling rock i described. so morality still exists.
This is why I always sit next to the person sitting by themself in the back of the room. Once I figure out why they're sitting by themself, I try to help. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
I still can't believe you have something against nihilism. I don't get it. Nihilism means you stop taking stuff for granted, and throw out all supposed morals and traditions, and think for yourself what you should do. Nothing we do really matters, that's the truth. When you die, when we all die, nothing we did will matter to any of us, it's all pointless and none of it has any true meaning.
But the fact you want to not take stuff for granted shows that you care about something. this shows that your not really nihilist at all. But morals exist and it's good to search for them. why give up just because it's difficult. Almost everything we do matters. it can hurt people or make them feel good. and that matters. Just because we die doesnt mean our lives don't matter.
I never said I was a nihilist. To some extent, I guess I am greatly inspired by the idea of it, though. And no, morals do not exist, they are made up, or a result/phenomenon that arises from our set of instincts. For something to matter, someone has to observe the effect. If everyone is dead, there is no-one left to observe the effect, and so nothing we ever did made any difference. I don't understand how you can think that it would matter.
People honestly don't understand "mental issues". You could spend your whole life being a social butterfly, then all of a sudden find yourself being a recluse. Anyone that can sit there and tell another person to buck up and get over it, really is ignorant.
anyway, if I could, I'd try my hardest to get you up out of bed and out into the world... but you'd probably have to get me out too LOL.
I srsly feel like people that don't understand depression and other issues to the point of ignorance of other peoples feelings need to spend a year in a deep depression so they wake the fuck up.
holy shit! you are like the only person i know that understands emo's...

Patty! But that feels sort of Nihilist (please excuse that spelling). In that case, why is positive emotion good? I mean, if you can say:
Happy = good
Then why not
Happy = a reaction of chemicals existing mainly because in nature the things that trigger them are good
I have trouble graping this. Even as I write I need to stop to mentally reiterate.

Well without a soul (which i don't believe in) people are completely controled by there genetics and there upbringing.
PaddyCuinne 2 years ago
Yepp, but the question remains to what proportion genetics have versus upbringing. I used to side with genetics slightly more than I do nowadays.
devilsaddendum 2 years ago
I think psychologists think its about 20 80 In environments favour. I tend to agree.
