@throb9 - The Night Stalker pilot film (1971) actually came out 2 years before this failed TV pilot which follows the same path. Occult horror and demonology was the hot trend in the early 70s in films and TV shows.
wow! awesome movie, i mean tv movie. i can't believe it was not picked up for a series. at least night stalker was further developed. thanks for loading this.
@RandomConcepts -- The inconclusive ending is because this was a pilot for a proposed series. The tapes seem to be the gimmick for starting each episode off. Pretty much a reworking of The Night Stalker. In the early '70s there was a pop culture craze for occultism and supernatural horror. Even Gene Roddenberry launched a failed series pilot "Spectre" with Robert Culp as a demon hunter.
@jlovebirch I remember this time frame from when I was a kid. We used to watch Dark Shadows when we came home from school from about 69 to 71, and we would beg to be allowed to stay up long enough to watch Kolchak.
I thoroughly enjoyed that. Made at the height of the California Gothic movement, this one had it all; hardboiled-sounding detective, beautiful youngish widow in a virtual modern castle, tunnels leading to a family crypt and outbuilding. The blood clay idea seemed somehow attached at the end, it sucked how Angie Dickinson abandoned the black chick to die, and HOW the dead husband and the antique girl learned of the magic is never really explained...but all in all I'd give it a 7/10.
Remember seeing this as a wee girl and being terrified by the 'ripping-off-car-door' scene: but I was too young to remember the title so great to rediscover it. Better than the overrated Night Stalker, I thought: more complex story, better cast (Hurd 'Dorian Gray' Hadfield, haunted Roy Thinnes and cuter-than-cute Angie Dickinson). And Curtis's direction more visualy confident here surely.
I wonder if this is why Kolchak usually begins by talking into a tape recorder

Wonderful, atmospheric '70's TV classic ! I loved the late Hurd Hatfield of Doran Gray fame as the creepy art dealer.

Great old movie. All these films owe a lot the the Curse of the Demon 1958-maybe the first reality based horror film.

The plots to this movie, Curse of the Black Widow, and the Nightstalker are all identical

The moral of this movie: Do NOT come between an artist and his art, especially if the artist is . . . FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE!
