I love the tunes you played but it seems that "Old Joe" is a different tune then "Old Joe Clark". Can you offer any clarification? Thanks! And great work.
This sounds great! Is the tuning on your dulcitar similar to that on the strumstick? And does it have paired strings like a mandolin or Irish bouzouki?
This makes me want to do the highland fling, though I'm not sure what it is. Great work and a beautiful instrument.
Another dulcitar lover here. I got my first one only a few months ago and it brings a higher pleasure to pain ratio than almost any other stringed instrument I have played. It was made by a guy I never met, Ray Jacobs who made it in 1989. It is the ugliest and most beautiful stringed instrument I have owned. It looks like a shoebox but it is really a treasure chest.
I'm a singer and had no desire to play an instrument, but I bought a dulcitar back in October because sometimes I can't get a band to play with me... It's an incredibly easy instrument to learn and has a great sound for blues and folk styles... and it's loud and it looks great. I hope to see thousands of people playing 'em soon.
Banjo is really for hillbilly, bluegrass, or ragtime, mainly. The music of the dulcitar or dulcimer is much more ancient and transformative. Banjos are also made from many types of material, with plastic parts, including the head.
There is just something special about playing instruments made of natural materials that seems to stir our "genetic memories" and connect us to the bards of old. My dulcitar takes me to places where banjos can't go.
I love the sound of this instrument playing irish tunes- I'm an Irish fiddler, to hear a jig on this strange instrument, makes me want to get one and try too!
Hi that was just great. Could you tell me the scale length please ? I think I might have to build one of these. Yours is the nicest sounding Ive heard so far.
I agree. That's one of the reasons I bought one from Smokey Mountain Dulcimer Works. They're less twangy and obnoxiously trebley than the McNally, and half the price.
Hi, thanks. Yes, I'm making some dulcitars these days. It costs 200 dollars (without the case and the shipping). You can write me to my inbox so we can get in touch.
Hi. Yes I build this type of instruments as well. I make fiddles and bows mainly. Check the ones I'm now selling...here's a video with one of those (playing the tune "tripping up the stairs" on my chanel).
Great video! Much admiration for your playing and instrument building talents! Have you tuned your instrument to a modal key? You mention in your notes that the instrument is "modal like a tin whistle" Didn't you mean "diatonic?" (the tin whistle has a diatonic scale like the dulcimer but is in a major (not modal) key as is a standard tuned dulcimer). Anyway, well done! Look forward to seeing more!
Thanks. I mean that you can play in D major and G major and the modes used in Irish music based on them, like the tin whistle. And yes, it's diatonic as well.
That was nice man

What tuning are you using and what key are you playing?
Can you make the dulcitar with geared tuners instead of friction pegs?
JollyJakester 1 year ago
@JollyJakester I0m using Dad and that tune is in d major, then the second one in e dorian. Yes, I'm making them with dulcimer tuning gears now.

where did you find the instructions for how to play this wonderful song?
isitsoiryet 1 year ago
I didn't follow any instructions. Just learned it first on the tin whistle or any other instrument and then tried to play it with my dulcitar.

Hi, Thank you very much.
The scale lenght I use is 64,5 cm, just like a guitar, so I can use guitar strings and have a proper tension.

Hi
Cant stay away its that good. You have 4 tuning pegs, but mention tuning Dad, does mean you are only using 3 strings. Forgive the ignorance. Cheers.
wrencountrysticks 3 years ago
Hi...the first (dd) course has two strings in unison (like the mandolin or bouzouki) and the second (A) and third (D) just one.
Thanks for watching it.
