Penn, I almost always agree with you. This time not as much. I've found talking on a cell phone more dangerous than listening to the radio. NOW, if you are REALLY into music, that may be different.
I think radio is usually very different from phones or text. You don't have to think about what to say in response, or what the person is saying. Listening to music feels more passive, even while singing, it's just repetition of lyrics. Listening to audio books takes attention to interpret the story. I have trouble talking to passengers while driving. I forget what they say and what I was going to say.
I own a driving school. I always point out to my students which drivers are on the phone, and we watch them for a while... When you really pay attention to which other drivers are on the phone, amazing how differently they drive. It's true that they don't usually swerve or fail to stop, but they DO have a greater tendency to tailgate, to drive side-by-side with trucks, or to change lanes quickly without signaling or checking their blind spot. These little habits add up.
Thank you Penn. I can't tell you how much that means. I was rear ended by someone texting. He never even put his brakes on. He only had 100k of insurance. I have 18 screws, 4 plates, and 2 rods in my spine now and a steel hip. I had to shut my business down and go bankrupt. I lost everything trying to pay for medical. Not only was he uninjured, he didn't have to pay be responsible even tho it was 100% his fault. It robbed me of my life and I couldn't even get all my medical bills paid.
out of curiosity could you elaborate more on why this person isn't responsible for all the payments? I mean this story is seriously disturbing and I don't understand how they are not indebted for life to you. Can't imagine what going through that is like. I don't text and drive anymore. Thanks for the share, stay strong.
@jlynch187 Because it is considered a civil case, not criminal. It simply wasn't worth the costs to go after him personally because he didn't have anything and any judgement made would have ended up in bankruptcy, leaving me with even more owed.
Doesn't seem right does it? What's worse is that this all happened to me through no fault of my own and when the state had to help pick up the tab then I get called lazy and told I need to learn personal responsibility. It made me hate our system.
listening to the radio isn't that dangerous. You can still fully pay attention to the road while listening to the radio. Now texting and driving? That's dangerous shit.
Good you figured this out: Driving without radio and phone does make one think. I get most of my ideas and solve problems while driving and thinking. And if that is true for you too, now try walking and hiking and thinking.

I'll bet your perception of driving faster,,''Like a mother Fucker'' is just altered by the fact that your simply driving now.
I'll wager again that you were driving like a ''Bat out of hell'' before you stopped talking on the phone,,, occasional texting,,and CD/Radio fumbling ..

@AborttheBabies From Wikipiedia... 1. It means he once shot a man for asking personal questions. 2. When Jillette first began performing, his mother told him to get a manicure because people would be looking at his hands. In response to this, he had all of his nails painted red as a joke. Sometimes I text, sometimes I talk to the phone while driving. Havent had an accident yet, but I cant see why I would. Obviously I dont text when the situation is dangerous enough, but when you just cruise along, its cool.
Obviously if you suck at driving or driving while talking or texting, dont do it.
I grew up in the late 50's, the early 60's. I nearly never listen to the radio,,,and only occasionally talk on cell. most ot the bullshit about DANGER ,,,is just that, you are either a bad driver or you are not,,,,cell phones do not make you a dangerous driver. mostly all talk about govt regs is bullshit!
Its very cool actually. I mean sometimes I listen to either talk radio or music but quite often I just have some quiet time to either think or just plain be quiet and focus on the driving.
I do not know if the fact of using your imagination is distracting U from driving (which it might) but in this case thinking is distracting to as talking to somebody in your car. In many European Country like France and Germany the use of a phone without blue tooth while driving is forbidden (and enforced). The studies done in Europe show that it is also the positioning when u talk on the phone, the phone falling etc... that's make it dangerous. If u have a bluetooth no problem.
Now I have to say that in Europe we drive with a stick so we do need both hands. Plus on highways in France the speed limit is 87 miles per hour knowing that everybody is cruising in fact @ 100 miles per Hour... And in Germany there are no speed limits on highways so the slightest problem with your phone can cost U your life and the life of couple other people.
A good argument for raising the speed limit. The problem in America is lane discipline not speed. In Germany assholes don't ride in the passing lanes because someone may indeed be coming at 150. Arrogance and slower speed allows people in America to set their cruise for 5 over the limit and ride in the passing lane. Try that on the Autobahn and let me know how you make out.
I agree with all of your statements and have come to similair veiws on driving but not through a long thought out progression, but more of a by product of old age I guess. Anyway, do you also notice the details of what other drivers are doing on the road and in their cars? With more perception comes the sudden reality that many people struggle with the basic rules of driving and more over the basic rules of common courtesy. I just find it interesting. Thanks for posting, love the show (BS)!
I do the same thing. No radio, no phone, nothing. I think it makes you more aware of what's going on around you. Then again, some people I know find road noises distracting, so turn on the music so they don't have to hear bumps and whistles and what have you.
I used to never listen to radio when I drove. Then about 12 years ago I started listening to talk radio. I haven't noticed much of a change in my driving, I have always driven like a little old lady. I like having the radio on as it keeps me from thinking too much. I usually think too much, over think things and worry too much and I just enjoy talk radio. Can't stand listening to music, I either get depressed (sad music) or angry or annoyed by the music/lyrics of what's on the radio.
well sometimes it angers me (talk radio) but music most of the time either makes me sad or its so angry/angsty it makes me angry for no real reason. at least with talk radio there is a reason for my anger (usually stupid politicians)
sounds like risk equilibrium. People have a set amount of risk they like to assume. So if Penn were driving without his seatbelt and disabled his airbags, and was on the phone, he would drive even slower. Similarly, when seat belt laws were passed, people drove faster.
For years I've driven with mostly nothing but my thoughts to stimulate me. I've never understood the "need" to chatter or text about nothing on the phone. And though I *love* music, I also like peace, or just thinking. I'd rather hear road noise (or for that matter fingernails on a blackboard) than the incessant blathering of radio commercials. And I installed my first CD player just this year. So with all due respect, Penn (and I've agreed with every one of your posts), nothing new here.
I do that once in a while, it is intense, a very different experiance, plus you get to know your car better, know how it reacts to different input etc. highened awareness does lead to faster driving and I seriously don't see much safety loss in driving slightly faster than the speedlimits like 5 to 10 over etc as long as its not raining or snowing etc.
Know what ticks me off? When people in the fast lane are going slow and don't allow people to pass them. I have seen this MULTIPLE times and every time people behind the slow driver have to swerve and do un-necessary lane changes.
Hm, I call bullshit. I drive with music half the time, without the other half, and it makes no difference at all. The only hazard is messing with the dials.
I think the difference between radio and phone calls/texting is you don't have to focus your attention to the radio like you do with a conversation or text. I guess it depends on the individual and how he/she focuses his/her attention. I think it would be interesting to see if talking to someone in your car is just as distracting as talking on the phone.
Penn is right that people who talk on the phone while driving drive slooooow. I bet illegalizing it makes the road faster as well as safe
also on top of nursing school i would get most pre-reqs done for the specific Medical career i'm chasing... such as a plastic surgeon or a pathologist
i'm sure you are.... what med school you going too???
cuz the 2-3 yrs is for saving my ass load of cash.... nursing school will definitely make me decide if i even wanna be in the med career anyway... my mom's friend who graduated from Creighton scored very well on her MCAT and still took her a year and a half to get into med school.... i'm not gonna major in pre-med because med schools look for people with other majors... so why waste my time with a pre-med major when i could get a nursing
i don't think 100k is gonna show up for me... and it typically takes 2-3 years for some people to get into med school... also some med schools require you to work in a hospital setting for X amount of years... take your ignorance elsewhere
There is now a blackberry app available that will allow you to customize an away message, so anyone who texts you while you are driving will receive a message of your choice... Example "driving, get back to you soon"
Just one last comment which you may already be aware of. Tests of drivers who talk on a cell phones show that they are impaired at roughly the equivalent of a 0.10% BAC. I can only imagine that texting while driving would impair a driver to an even greater degree. I had a preconception that this video was going to be a rant against more laws and regulations, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that you were in favor. I've seen enough soccer moms nearly kill bicyclists, thank you very much.
Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh has made similar enjoinment to be "mindful" in all activities in life. I'm not sure he would agree with the idea of driving "like a bat out of hell," but the idea of eliminating distractions while driving is a practice he would certainly endorse. If for no other reason then, as you said, you actually get more, not less, from the experience.
ok correct my spelling on the internet= IQ +15 points.... nurse anesthesist starts @ 80k... while i am working as a nurse i plan on goin through med school like most nurses do retard... this year i'm gonna have over 16 hours as a surgeon's intern/assistant.... i'm only 17 and i'm taking classes juniors in college take
did i just hear him use the words "teller said" as if to imply that teller actually spoke!? i mean, i'm sure he's not mute but it's weird to hear him say that.
no bud... its called college and it isn't cheap... i guess i could say i'm a freshman-sophmore considering i got 10 credits under my belt and gonna graduate HS with 16 credits... then i plan on majoring in nursing and becoming a nurse anesthesist and maybe a surgeon... don't judge people on what they drive it makes you look like a cock... even when i become involved in medical i would buy another blazer because those trucks can get through any thing they are bullet proof
i thought he was gonna say that while it is incredibly stupid to text and drive, it is still your right as an individual do it, but i was pleasantly surprised.
I'm unsubscribing from Penn Says because, as great as Penn is, it's not worth sitting through a 15 second pre-roll ad just to hear him ramble for 4 minutes.
not the ones that pay my friend... i would rather be a whitey and make 180k a year because i had the grades and legal status to go to college... were i live the only job a latino can get is either roofing or gardening and during the winter they hibernate and are never seen until summer....
I never said that whites were dominant in mma you stupid fucktard. My argument was simply that there are good fighters of every race in mma. And really, if Forrest Griffin is congruent with 35-1 Fedor Emelianenko or 14-2 Georges St. Pierre, then you're an even stupider coon than I thought.
Wow - I can't believe Penn got the same experience I got.. How cool is that!
I bought my used beat up vehicle at a better price because the radio was stolen. I liked not being distracted so much, I never put one in! I drive faster and with more skill, and I soak in MUCH more about things that I think about!
The fragmented thinking I used to experience (fast-cut MTV style) is elongated into complete productive thoughts.
You'll notice a lot more 'idiot driving' too! - It's great FUN!
Being more aware of your surroundings allow you to comfortably take more chances.
Driving fast and erratically while doing so safely is a sign of proficiency.
I would imagine most people who drive the auto bond at triple digit speeds have very little distractions. It is all about the drive and the honing of ones skills.
In recent studies they have shown zero difference in chance of getting into an accident while talking on the phone as opposed to not talking on the phone.
Texting though, will make you much more likely to get in a wreck... About the same as eating, or changing radio stations/cds/mp3 songs.
Personally, I tend to zone out more, and be less alert if I'm not on the phone.
There have been times when I've been driving down the shore or something and my cd ends and I don't even notice. I'll make the rest of the drive down with no music and the windows down and I agree, it is really cool. There's a certain kind of freedom about just hearing the wind instead of music.
by the way, freaking LOVE your bass! That thing is incredible
Thanks for doing this video, seriously! Using the cell and driving is a pet peeve of mine. I can't tell you how many times I nearly gotten into an accident cause someone is talking on the phone not paying enough attention and pulls out in front of me. I turn off my radio most of the time. Yes I agree it's much better that way.
Thats why I preffer commuting on a motorcycle. When you ride, you ride. Theres no coffe, radio, phone or passanger talking your ear off. You are so much more aware of your vulnerability and so aware of everything that happens around you.
You can also react so much quicker. Both because your focus on the job and also because the nimbleness of the motorcycle.
A friend just bought a motorcycle and he gets 77mpg, and it may get even better once it's all broken in. I think as time goes on more people will discover the awesome of motorcycles.
Who doesn't know that texting while driving is retarded? I'm not 100% on this, but what is usually being said in a text message is SO far from important....and, by its nature, a WRITTEN message...is going to stay written until it is convenient to responsibly be read. Knowing that someone may or may not be laughing out loud on the other end....priceless? OMG!
Texting/talking on the cell, are greatly different from most other distractions. When you are listening to the radio, reaching for a cigarette or cd, while distracted momentarily, your attention and thoughts are still " in the car"...........On the phone, your mind, your attention, your consciousness is miles away, with someone else. You actually stop thinking about what's around you. ...............Very dangerous.
My stereo in my car has been broken for months... no radio, no CDs, no plugging in my iPod and it sucks, it really sucks. On top of that, I think I'm more distracted than ever because my mind is wandering, and I had my first accident because I was thinking. Now I'm a really nervous driver.
I enjoy driving. On my days off...I drive to "nowhere" sometimes. I'll grab a bite to eat at some bullshit diner, then cruise back home, or where ever. I enjoy cars..mostly cars with some balls...but I also enjoy the scene. I also live in a big city...and sitting in a traffic on the freeway SUCKS
penn, i have noticed that too! i used to drive while blasting my black metal.. and now when i drive, well if i drive alone, i drive silently and i started to pay attention more and see whats going on around me, and you do tend to drive faster! haha its great.
but of course i blast my music and shuch when driving with friends.
I'm guilty of texting while driving. I feel badly about doing it while I'm doing it, but I don't stop anyway. One of my many vices.
I think I'd probably fall asleep without music playing...so I'll have to pass, even though it sounds interesting. Then again, I wouldn't really see much of the world go by considering I work about six blocks from my house.
I did 4 years in the Marines. I wasn't racist before, but became annoyed with all the ghetto-trash I had to tollerate on a daily basis. Racist humor makes me laugh because there's a grain of truth in it. Some black people ARE a lower species of monkey.
And y'know, I can see where you're coming from. But my point is, if you're going to judge people, don't do it by color. Do it by how incredibly fucking stupid someone is instead. Because quite frankly, there are just as many completely idiotic white people as there are black people, or Mexican people, etc. etc.
yeah since juice williams, donovann mcnabb, and michael vick are even mentioned in the same conversation as Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, or Brett Favre. As for MMA, what about Georges St. Pierre, Forrest Griffin, Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, Brock lesnar, Frank Mir, Fedor Emelianenko, etc etc etc? Keep your racism in the ghetto where it belongs.
When I'm traveling to an unfamiliar neighborhood, I tend to turn my music off so I can pay more attention to street signs and unfamiliar traffic obstacles and speed limits. Driving to work is monotonous when it becomes routine. It's all muscle memory anyway, so I can pretty much zone out, listen to music, and somehow make it to work without killing myself.
Imagine all of this except that you can't go any faster and there are no people jogging or things going on outside your window. Now you're playing Penn and Teller's Desert Bus.
Scrapheap I am glad you replied to my comment. I checked out some of your video posts. I agree with most of your commentary's. Politically I am hard right, minus the religion. I like the truthful inforrrmation the "right wing doushebags" provide You don't get the real news listening to CNN or MSNBC... I subscribed to your channel so keep the good stuff coming.
I drove without radio for over a year. It was maddening! I have mp3 capability now and love it. I listen to books on "tape" now and enjoy it so much more. Yes, I do pay attention when I drive, I always drive defensively. I also have XM for those times where I don't want to listen to a book. The Boneyard on XM is awesome!!
I've been driving with nothing but the road for 2 yrs. You're right, you can hear and see everything. It's much easier to focus on the external world.
Penn is notoriously cautious in his daily life, and evidenced by the fact that he's never drank alcohol and has never done drugs. That he would adopt this new data into his life is unsurprising.
a lot of locations and states are passing laws making it illegal to text/talk on cell phones while driving, which carry minor penalties. DUI laws don't specify what you're under the influence of, and since cell phones are proven just as dangerous as being over the legal limit, why not treat it as seriously?! i've been in only 2 accidents, neither of which were my fault, and both times the other driver was talking or texting on a cell. i rest my case.
The distraction still impairs driving, but I wouldn't say you're under the influence of a cell phone... Some people are (I have friends that send 500 texts a day... How, I have no idea, but they do).
I don't think that people should be texting while driving, but I think that this is another one of those problems that's being blown way out of proportion. If "everyone" is doing it, as people say, then don't I constantly see accidents everytime I go out? Either not that many people actually do it all the time, or the people who are doing it have gotten pretty good at it.
i disagree if you are someone that thinks too much , you can get distracted without a radio on. if you get lost in deep thought its really bad on the road. zoning out, that kind of stuff.
radio helps drown the noise in your head and just concentrate on the road more.
BUT, regardless of the personal safety risk, Penn certainly does not support the banning of texting while driving. I'm dissapointed he didn't mention that at the end.
I think listening to music in the car is one of the best times to actually enjoy an album. I don't think I could give that up. However, drive-texting is retarded.
lol playing my music loud is the only reason I like driving plus I would just get bored since most of where I drive is either country, back roads or highways so there isn't much to look at
don't know if you ride motorcycles or not BUT, i can relate to your driving experience without phones and/or radios when i ride, it's amazing how much attention you pay to driving w/o distractions...
This is why I get so irritated by other drivers on the road. No one pays attention. Everytime I have got some dipshi* in front of me breaking for no reason, driving 5 under, changing lanes without paying attention, stopping in the road because they missed their turn off, I speed up look over and what do you know the A-hole is on their phone, that or they are an old asian female(aka the trifecta). I wish I had a gun that acted as an engine kill switch for stupid drivers.
I can't stand when I have someone sitting shotgun who thinks that I'm not listening if I'm not looking at them when they're speaking to me. Um..I am trying to drive ya know.
Also I have a friend who does look over at me while we talk, so I try to just keep my mouth shut. lol
Sometimes I drive with nothing playing but I don't notice that big of a difference. But maybe it is better.... I'm sure I'm more alert at those times.
The last bad run-in I had happened because I was on the phone. I was so into the conversation I really just wasn't paying attention at all and I pulled alongside a diesel truck and he turned right into my door and bent it in half. :/
I just think about stuff while driving without noise. It's like a radio going on in my head, so I don't pay more attention to the road, I just pay more attention to my thoughts.
YO SON, THE FUCK WAS DAT SHIT ABOUT OLD LADIES?!! I'M AN OLD LADY N I DRIVE LIKE A BEAST!!!

With more perception comes the sudden reality that many people struggle with the basic rules of driving and more over the basic rules of common courtesy. I just find it interesting. Thanks for posting, love the show (BS)!
yelocrd 2 years ago
I do the same thing. No radio, no phone, nothing. I think it makes you more aware of what's going on around you. Then again, some people I know find road noises distracting, so turn on the music so they don't have to hear bumps and whistles and what have you.
xwhereswalleyx 2 years ago
I used to never listen to radio when I drove. Then about 12 years ago I started listening to talk radio. I haven't noticed much of a change in my driving, I have always driven like a little old lady. I like having the radio on as it keeps me from thinking too much. I usually think too much, over think things and worry too much and I just enjoy talk radio. Can't stand listening to music, I either get depressed (sad music) or angry or annoyed by the music/lyrics of what's on the radio.
dianddra999 2 years ago
So talk radio never depresses/angers/annoys you in any way? Ha, I'd think it would be the other way around! It is for me anyway :)
murphydexter311 2 years ago
well sometimes it angers me (talk radio) but music most of the time either makes me sad or its so angry/angsty it makes me angry for no real reason. at least with talk radio there is a reason for my anger (usually stupid politicians)
dianddra999 2 years ago
Good point, I'll turn off my phone and radio and maybe read your novel.

sounds like risk equilibrium. People have a set amount of risk they like to assume. So if Penn were driving without his seatbelt and disabled his airbags, and was on the phone, he would drive even slower. Similarly, when seat belt laws were passed, people drove faster.
KenC411 2 years ago
*smiles* And now you at least partly understand why I never bother to maintain any audio system in my cars, or just remove them entirely.
There's a whole world out there. Get off the phone, kill the radio, and drive!
(Ironic that I'd make a comment like that while perusing the internet and YouTube...)
Alisterwolf66 2 years ago

Mikej1592 2 years ago
Know what ticks me off? When people in the fast lane are going slow and don't allow people to pass them. I have seen this MULTIPLE times and every time people behind the slow driver have to swerve and do un-necessary lane changes.

golpher93 2 years ago
I think the difference between radio and phone calls/texting is you don't have to focus your attention to the radio like you do with a conversation or text. I guess it depends on the individual and how he/she focuses his/her attention. I think it would be interesting to see if talking to someone in your car is just as distracting as talking on the phone.
Penn is right that people who talk on the phone while driving drive slooooow. I bet illegalizing it makes the road faster as well as safe

what med-school do u go to... i really wanna know
Inv4derxXx 2 years ago
ok thats why schools offer pre-med programs instead of a major

cuz the 2-3 yrs is for saving my ass load of cash.... nursing school will definitely make me decide if i even wanna be in the med career anyway... my mom's friend who graduated from Creighton scored very well on her MCAT and still took her a year and a half to get into med school.... i'm not gonna major in pre-med because med schools look for people with other majors... so why waste my time with a pre-med major when i could get a nursing
Inv4derxXx 2 years ago
i don't think 100k is gonna show up for me... and it typically takes 2-3 years for some people to get into med school... also some med schools require you to work in a hospital setting for X amount of years... take your ignorance elsewhere

JamesKravenwolf 2 years ago

You can also react so much quicker. Both because your focus on the job and also because the nimbleness of the motorcycle.

OMG!
ShredderMetal 2 years ago
Texting/talking on the cell, are greatly different from most other distractions. When you are listening to the radio, reaching for a cigarette or cd, while distracted momentarily, your attention and thoughts are still " in the car"...........On the phone, your mind, your attention, your consciousness is miles away, with someone else. You actually stop thinking about what's around you. ...............Very dangerous.
216trixie 2 years ago
My stereo in my car has been broken for months... no radio, no CDs, no plugging in my iPod and it sucks, it really sucks. On top of that, I think I'm more distracted than ever because my mind is wandering, and I had my first accident because I was thinking. Now I'm a really nervous driver.

Scrapheap71 2 years ago
And y'know, I can see where you're coming from. But my point is, if you're going to judge people, don't do it by color. Do it by how incredibly fucking stupid someone is instead. Because quite frankly, there are just as many completely idiotic white people as there are black people, or Mexican people, etc. etc.
Lovecraftian 2 years ago

When I'm traveling to an unfamiliar neighborhood, I tend to turn my music off so I can pay more attention to street signs and unfamiliar traffic obstacles and speed limits. here's a suggestion: instead of making cell phones and driving illegal, why not just expand DUI laws to cover that shit too?
dartrip4 2 years ago 2
?
Wait... Can you elaborate on this? It doesn't make any sense.
tybo09 2 years ago
a lot of locations and states are passing laws making it illegal to text/talk on cell phones while driving, which carry minor penalties. DUI laws don't specify what you're under the influence of, and since cell phones are proven just as dangerous as being over the legal limit, why not treat it as seriously?! i've been in only 2 accidents, neither of which were my fault, and both times the other driver was talking or texting on a cell. i rest my case.
dartrip4 2 years ago
Oh, ok. Makes sense. I don't necessarily agree, but it makes sense.
The only issue I could see is that you're not really under the influence of a cell phone... Your point is probably valid, though.
tybo09 2 years ago

I don't think that people should be texting while driving, but I think that this is another one of those problems that's being blown way out of proportion. If "everyone" is doing it, as people say, then don't I constantly see accidents everytime I go out? Either not that many people actually do it all the time, or the people who are doing it have gotten pretty good at it.
mrplow8 2 years ago
i disagree if you are someone that thinks too much , you can get distracted without a radio on. if you get lost in deep thought its really bad on the road. zoning out, that kind of stuff.
radio helps drown the noise in your head and just concentrate on the road more.
