I believe this was Number One the day I started school.
I've always found it an eerie little song, the way they're singing about the life, death and then ascension into Heaven of a real person. Memorable and catchy certainly, but not a typical one hit wonder.
I love this song,it reminds me of my early life living on Clarendon Road in Salford. I remember quite vividly "Having nowt on me feet" and using socks on my hands to keep warm cos my mum and dad couldn't afford gloves, come to think of it we couldn't afford much at all, but we happy enough.I haven't been to Salford since 1986 so I have no idea what it is like now. But I do still have some happy memories living there as a child.
I assume 'Lowry time', is what Snakeeyesss11 meant but that still wouldn't make sence as he was painting in the 1920s untill his death in 1976, anyway, an under-rated song. A UK #1 1 hit wonder in 78. I understand it was meant to be 'matchSTICK' cats & dogs rather than match'STALK' but 4 a misunderstanding of the English language.

Pity they didn't show a picture of Lowry.
Great nostalgic memories. The combination of sound and pictures so depicts the time.

I wonder why the scene at 0:41 is filmed in Stockport and not Salford. That is Stockport viaduct in the background.
trent7176 3 years ago
This was the choice of the TV producer who wanted a "Lowryesque" background, and Lowry did paint a picture of Stockport viaduct

@trent7176 was the school choir from Lancs? I think not!

they're not the schoolkids from st winifreds school choir! they look a lot older!
paulmac38 3 years ago
Quite right. Although St Winifred's choir sang on the record, the were to young to appear on Top of the Pops, as the show was recorded after 7pm.

mmmmmmmm Yea great songand video. But me thinks the clothes dude's wearing was in larry time . he he he
snakeeyesss11 4 years ago
What is "larry time", please?
seftonwallet 4 years ago
No its because Status Quo sang pictures of matchstick men and they did not want to bring a song out with such a similar title.
trent7176 3 years ago
Nothing to do with the Staus Quo title actually.
"Matchstalk" was a local term instead of matchstick, especially in the 1950s when Mick was a lad.
